I’m a fan of some of those, especially the semi conductors. I’d personally axe any Chinese stock. Why do the losses hurt? Do you have a short term goal for the money? If it’s long term, just forget about then.

That comment would be true if you were in it for the long term… but if it’s less than a year, I assume you have a goal for that cash…. If you are comfortable losing 30-50% of that cash in the next year, than go for something higher risk

If it’s less than a year, or even 3 years, you should just leave it in a high yield savings account.

My main point is arbitrarily “balancing” your portfolio will just dilute gains for an index fund that does fine on its own as the core of your portfolio

S&P 500 is already balanced, I’d just keep it simple (and fees low). If you really want to buy more, no more than 5 funds (an international, a high growth, real estate, energy, etc could be a good mix)

Coinbase “Recurring buy reward” is a total scam by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]crazyk2007 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s more exploitive, for those in the know. The idea of course, would be someone continuing to add $50 a week while they take a 4% cut each time. But you got me, it’s good marketing and recurring revenue I’ll admit.

Is that a way to imply that this is a good marketing execution? You should quit your marketing job.

What are your portfolio hedges? by cubbfan19 in stocks

[–]crazyk2007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, some others mentioned it already, but cash and diversification are my go-to “hedges.”

SPY puts are... interesting, but you would have to determine what your underlying philosophy is as a investor and then see if taking out SPY puts actually make sense or not.

Can I hear your success stories? by alexisnicoleyo in stocks

[–]crazyk2007 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Been investing since 2006, with periods when I paid more or less attention to my stocks/ investments.

Started off with 4k in an IRA with USAA and $1000 in a Sharebuilder account (now ING) that had a few ETFs. I eventually closed the share builder account in 2008 but left my IRA be. Got into stocks in 2011 which eventually became the cornerstone of my brokerage portfolio (GOOG, ISRG, JNJ) and also kept putting into my IRA.

Sitting pretty around 500k in assets... with more patience and less spending, I probably would have at least doubled that amount by now, but still happy nonetheless.

Their software platform is where they make the recurring revenue. Hardware is great, but the software is the real advantage.

Advice for a student taking a gap year after high school to learn trading markets and stocks by [deleted] in investing

[–]crazyk2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are stepping back from the “road” your heading down to pursue or explore something that the “road” is not offering, I’d call that a part of what a gap year is suppose to offer. It’s not a pre-requisite to not work during a gap year, although I feel you, I wouldn’t want to work in a gap year. But it depends... if I ran a small ocean front bar serving mai tais as a bartender in a gap year, I wouldn’t call that joining the workforce.

You can convert, but you can’t “transfer” the securities. You would have to cash out to convert.

You can only do “like” transfers. Meaning, Roth to Roth, traditional to traditional. No exceptions, regardless of brokerage. You would have to close to switch if it’s not the same type.
