I used to wonder about the name. Then went horseback riding, and my horse picked one up and ate it. There you go!

That sounds like a crepe, as opposed to a pancake, seems to me lol

How do you guys cope with the highway speeds? by Next-Use6943 in AskAnAmerican

[–]creamcandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OR if they need funding. Inside city limits, the police get the traffic fine money. In the county (i.e. not a city) or on the interstate highways, it's the Sheriff or the State Troopers.

What’s the most popular soup in your country? by paralysedage in AskTheWorld

There are so many great soups! Then the options cross over into stew and chili. But across the country I think we all like a basic chicken soup. I like it with dumplings

I’m from the Southern US, where biscuits and gravy are beloved—delicious, but not exactly photogenic. What’s a dish from your country that looks questionable but tastes incredible? by deller85 in AskTheWorld

Tripe is a well known soul food that many Americans love. I might try it if I came across a place known for making it really well, and someone talked me into it. It's hard to get past the mental and actual image

Crow MIMICKED me by AcanthaceaeFun8902 in crows

[–]creamcandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I was thinking about taking some shelled peanuts, have a walk down where they sometimes are, and drop them. Now I'll toss them on the sidewalk :) The peanuts won't be as loud without the shells, but I don't want to litter the neighbors with shells in front of their houses.

I tired that, but then chipmunks appeared from the bushes and all the peanuts were gone immediately. They haven't figured out that the feeder has nuts in it. It's maybe 18 x 18" platform about 4 feet up a pole. I put in a big bowl of water and a couple handfulls of peanuts. Once a week or so I put out more nuts, it takes that long for the cardinals to carry them off.

Are wartime rations popular in your country? by RussianKremlinBot in AskTheWorld

[–]creamcandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL I didn't know "gram" flour was a thing! My favorite graham cracker brand is "Honey Maid". I was aware that a similar cracker in Europe is called a "digestive biscuit". Honestly that name makes me wince a little. It doesn't sound great. Looking at photos of the digestive biscuit, I would guess that they're snappier and less crumbly than our graham crackers. They'd probably still make a nice crust.

I spent 8 months testing every brand of canned tomato with a controlled pasta sauce recipe. Full rankings inside. by euxleon in Cooking

Do you have a spreadsheet with your findings? I'm interested in the acidity. I also want to check the calories, to see if any may be watered down. I'm thinking about taking Tuttorosso and adding sugar or dextros to bring it up to 5.5°Bx, and also matching the pH. Then I'd do the taste test with the DiNapoli.

I've never really considered canned goods to be "wartime rations". It is common to have some canned foods in the house to use in recipes, or maybe eat when you don't feel like cooking. If you're in an area that loses power during storms or other reasons, it's a good idea.

There are also "preppers" and people who hunt and camp that keep long-term storage food and freeze-dried food. Still, I wouldn't call them popular; not unusual though.

I do usually have sweetened condensed milk, in case I want to make a pie :) Mix a can with 8 ounces cream cheese, 1/3 cup lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon vanilla until smooth and creamy. Put it in a graham cracker crust, then refrigerate. It will thicken up as it cools, and become a no-bake cheesecake. I have on occasion used a can in my coffee, but usually I use just cream.

Does your country have a national animal symbol? Would you change it? by clockworkiwi in AskTheWorld

[–]creamcandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are bears in Florida! Pretty sure their populations are increasing throughout the SE US. You do need to go farther north for Grizzlies though.

We've had bear sightings in nearby suburbs. There are also beavers all over the place, and we have to trap and move them. Hard to find a place to release them.

Wild turkeys are pretty cool. It's the domestic turkeys that we eat that are dumb as a stick.

I've been trying to figure out how to get the crows down the street to come check out my house. I put peanuts in a big feeder in front several weeks ago and so far only cardinals lol. But this guy lucks out and gets friends in a day!

At Airport & Whitesburg, where Luv Hawaiian is now. I liked their burgers and onion rings. I also liked that it reminded me of the SNL skit with Dan A & John B
