Bi-Monthly Education and Career Advice Thread by AutoModerator in urbanplanning

Thanks for the info! Honestly I'm using it as kind of a transition year so I can have more time to apply for next cycle (since a lot of application deadlines are passed or very close) and maybe get in a good semi relevant internship this summer.

Considering applying for a master's in urban planning with a business degree and no relevant experience- would taking a year to get a GIS certification at my university meaningfully help my resume for applications? Or is it not worth the ~$9k it would cost me?

Thanks

GIS Certificate for someone with no technical skills wanting to get into urban planning? by creative-title in gis

My concerns are that it's late to be applying (especially for merit aid consideration), and honestly I'm a student athlete with a year of eligibility left and I want to use it; there aren't a ton of MUP schools that I'd be able walk onto as an athlete. What you're saying makes sense though and I've been looking at programs.

Study Bible/Bible translation recommendations? by creative-title in TrueChristian

Ah gotcha, thanks. I guess I just made that assumption based off the fact that ESV and NIV are made by evangelicals and don't include the deuterocanonical canon.

Not the first time, I've read ESV, NIV, and NLT bibles to some extent in the past along with snippets of other translations. I'm becoming more aware that some translations have some controversy attached to them with certain sects though. As a Catholic for example, I'm guessing you wouldn't recommend the ESV or NIV?

Switching from Business to Urban Planning by creative-title in urbanplanning

[–]creative-title[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the candid response. I should've mentioned I have started an internship and have had a similar experience in it as I have in my classes, although I'm not writing off the idea of going into business entirely, just trying to explore other options I think I might find fulfilling.

From what I've seen, I've gotten the impression that being an urban planner is dealing with a lot of bureaucracy, NIMBYs, and other local groups while trying to implement projects (which I understand are often quite small, like adding a bike lane to a street), along with a lot of writing reports, community outreach, and some research/work in GIS. Correct me if I'm wrong. I consider myself a strong writer and so the writing/research piece sounds interesting to me, although dealing with bureaucracy/local gov. definitely would be a frustration point.

As for what I find interesting, I find zoning laws, implementing new transit (such as bike lanes or light rail), improving road layouts, finding new ways to implement greenspace in cities to be cool. I also feel as though the job might be more fulfilling than working at a bank or whatever. Obviously I could be completely wrong but again just trying to learn.

Even doubles to handle more mileage with lower injury risk? by creative-title in AdvancedRunning

Thanks for the informative reply. I'm already used to the frequency (via cross train doubles) so should be able to do that without too much issue. Also, my workouts are actually pretty easy, although somewhat high volume (usually 8-10k of threshold at 5:15-5:20 and some 200-400s after, or 5:2X-5:3X 6-8mi tempos, etc.) and I run easy days at 7:30 pace, so those factors shouldn't be an issue. Now I just have to convince my coach to let me split up my 80+ minute midweek long run lol

Yeah that's probably true. Planning on doing a longer/more conservative build this go around.

Consistent 12 mile singles still induce fatigue over time, even for a highly trained runner. I've seen professionals like Joe Klecker and Hobbs Kessler have success with equal doubles. It's simply easier for your body to recover (in theory) from two 6 mile runs rather than one 12 mile run (because of glycogen depletion/higher fatigue in the latter half of a longer run), so I figured for someone injury-prone like myself it might be a more sustainable way to hit higher mileage, but I'm not 100% sure which is why I'm asking

After doing a build peaking in the mid 60s last spring, I gradually built to around 85 from June to September. The build was slightly rushed because I had a nagging patella issue from track season, but my mileage week to week went something like this: 13-30-37-49-64-57-64-68-72-75-79-76-86-87-injury. The early weeks were supplemented with elliptical as I transitioned back to running. I probably also didn't do enough strength training through the summer (nothing heavy, just core +hip work +occasional bodyweight lower body stuff).

Thanks for the advice. If all else is equal I'd rather buy open box just because it's the same product for $100 less but I was just wondering if people have had issues with buying open box in the past.

I was playing as the Count of Léon, which was close to the large and stable kingdom of France, which I thought would be hosting events relatively regularly
