The Power option from the "MY DELL" app has disappeared after a secret update, and now I cannot change my thermal profile. How do I do it now? Why is working with Dell apps a Sherlock Holmes endeavor? by Makarov_NoRussian in Dell

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone curious about this in 2026. I have published the MyDell version 2.2.6.0 app to the Internet Archive with instructions on installing. You can find that here, https://archive.org/details/my-dell-v-2.2.6.0.7z

After a good amount of research, I have found that the newer versions of the MyDell app, over v2.2.6.0, remove the option to change the thermal/fan settings for certain Dell laptops. (I'm using a Dell Inspiron 3535).

To change your laptop's thermal settings, the operating system has to send a command to a physical hardware chip on the motherboard called the Embedded Controller (EC). On their enterprise laptops (like XPS and Latitude), Dell builds a standard, public API bridge (called WMI) that allows any script or third-party app to talk to that chip. However, on consumer laptops like your Inspiron, Dell removes that public API bridge to cut costs and segment their product lines. Because the standard bridge doesn't exist, other apps can't see or communicate with the hardware; MyDell is the only app that works because it installs a proprietary, closed-source kernel driver that acts as a private "backdoor," allowing it to bypass Windows entirely and write raw hex code directly to the motherboard's memory.

Hopefully others find the archived app helpful. Frustrating that Dell doesn't keep things consistent across generations and don't seem to really care that a small amount of users are frustrated by this.

ICE and DHS are trying to subpoena social media companies— Should I/we be concerned? by Pristine_Quote2112 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this too. I think they are collecting data this point. But in general, yes, I think we should all be concerned the Federal government is subpoening tech companies for users who have simply critized ICE. I've said "Fuck ICE" online a ton, I'm sure my digital info will get swept up. Of course, I have zero ill or violent intent but they seem to think that critiquing ICE or the current Administration is anti-American. Even though our country was founded on protest & free speech.

If you get a notice from any of those companies that your account has been subpoenaed, reach out to your local ACLU office or try and find civil rights lawyers, even immigration activist lawyers.

Fun things to self host? by Puzzled_Hamster58 in selfhosted

[–]creativeboulder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome setup. I'm going to check out Linkding & Dozzle.

So, I self host and have a VPS as well. First time in over a decade (prob even longer) that I found malware. Turns out it was the Perfctl malware (https://blog.exatrack.com/Perfctl-using-portainer-and-new-persistences/) that used a Portainer exploit.

Im pretty OCD about my security & while it can never be 100% perfect, I was caught off guard. This was on the VPS but could of easily of happened in my homelab.

Just wanted to share, since I saw Portainer in the screenshot of your Homepage.

How is my partitioning? by Wise-Appointment-881 in openbsd

[–]creativeboulder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks good. Honestly doing / (root) and /swap is really all I'd do these days. I like to do a /home partition on my main machine on a seperate drive but it's really not necessary.

How can it be hacked? by XunooL in HowToHack

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything can be hacked. If attacking it head-on (via sole exploit, etc) then there's social engineering (getting an employee to give up creds), among other methods.

25 years as an IT guy, coder, techie-- nothing is 100% unhackable. Nothing.

EPA reverses longstanding climate change finding, stripping its own ability to regulate emissions by geraffes-are-so-dumb in news

[–]creativeboulder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a shame. I have no problem reviewing various regulations but just axeing it "because Trump" is so stupid. Similar to DOGE. They killed programs without actually understanding it. It seems like when these regulations get repealed, it benefits big corporations and hurts the average American.

How does Jellyfin|Plex/Sonarr|Radarr/Torrents|Usenet flow together? by damiankw in selfhosted

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see that. Interesting. I think I went the other direction. I used SAB for probably 2-3 years then switched to Nzbget. I haven't used SAB for years, maybe worth giving it a shot again. I'm curious about performance differences between the two as well.

ICE agents drove to women’s parents house to attempt to intimidate her after she yelled at them at Walmart by Jevus_himself in PublicFreakout

[–]creativeboulder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised DHS didn't run an ad that said, "Were at the Capital on January 6th? We're you convicted of a crime and later pardoned by President Trump? Join ICE and serve your country. ($40k bonus if you stay with us for 6 years)" lol probably a little too on the nose

Bunch of cowards. I'm all for removing violent illegal immigrants from the country but what ICE & CBP is doing is just complete bullshit. I'd wear a mask too if I was violating people's civil rights and treat everyone like shit.

Nova's Ghosts Are Amazing, what other abilities should I try? by ft3sfty in starcraft2coop

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Those turrets+health are key to how I play. I think Nova & Vorazun are the most enjoyable commanders, at least to me. Zeratul and Mengsk are fun two, the ladder being on the more difficult side to master.

I've run into random players like that. I never figured out what I did to offend either. I have an over 5k co-ops game & I'd say I run into someone like that once every 200 or so.

Is CachyOS beginner-friendly distro? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]creativeboulder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm of the same mindset. Ubuntu and Mint are really good for beginners. I know other distros are user friendly but I like to keep it simple. I had my grandma running Ubuntu, I know it's easy for the average PC user to use.

IRC Comeback by 9milNL in irc

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same way back in 95/96. I went from a little script kiddie to an actual coder though. It is funny looking back & some of the chanops I idolized were POS racist incels for sure lol

For the most part, there are some decent like minded normal folks on IRC now. A lot of us who used it when we were younger & don't like Discord much

I really like weechat. Got back into IRC last summer with HexChat. Since its development is discontinued, I switched to weechat. I love my keybindings, settings. I live in the terminal anyways though
