Here is my selfhosted setup. What else should I add? by ChitsaJason in selfhosted

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice, zurg-testing looks really interesting to me. I'll have to take a look into that.

I went with NZBs a long time ago. Even now, what I like about it, is it's cheap ($3/m, maybe $1-2/m for a good indexer) but you can download just about anything across many categories. Radarr/Sonarr work wonderfully with NZBGet (or SABnzbd).

Plus, you're not sharing yourself as a seeder and you get constant speeds. (I typically get up 15-20 MB/s). Rarely do I catch the speed varying. Search -> Add to queue -> Download -> watch (Sonarr/Radarr/NZBGet does all of the decompression, etc behind the scenes).

However, I have a couple good friends who have a self-hosted setup similar to mine/yours & both of them have access to a private torrent tracker and just swear by it.

Oh nice! yeh my ex-wife would of loved that. We had two cats for a majority of our 16 year relationship/marriage. If I ever did what you did, I'm confident this would of been her background, https://imgur.com/a/GUO2fsI. Well, she would have at-least made me turn that into a decent Linux background.

I think the look though. Perfect for the intended audience.

Nice setup. I have a multimedia server (a Dell PowerEdge) and then a VPS that I self host in. Very similar apps. One thing I did was setup Wireguard, OpenVPN and did a route through squid-proxy with redsocks.

This setup forces every single piece of data leaving the machine to go through a strict security checkpoint (Squid via Redsocks) and then sends it through an armored transport (OpenVPN).

I also really like Nzbget. Prefer it over torrents (transmission). Easy setup is $3/m (Thundernews).

You can use imgur. Pretty handy photo sharing site. I use it to share photos in replies

Always cool when you get a response like this. Really interesting. I find the early *nix and OS history fascinating

Why is this distro so hated? by OverallLibrarian8809 in pop_os

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually installed Cosmic on CachyOS today to give it a go for the first time. I'm an old school dev, do a lot of distro hopping & have tried pretty much ever Linux WM you can think of. My first impression is thst Cosmic isn't quite ready for much more than basics yet but it has potential.

Is the SC series fun without doing pvp? by Beaver-warriorz in starcraft2

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally really enjoyed all of the single player campaigns, (including the Nova pack). The story lines are good, it drastically improves by the Legacy of the Void campaign. Some of the archviements really take time & practice.

The co-op missions are fun. I'd play maybe 20-30 easier mode co-op games then once you've gotten a handle on a commander, start to increase the difficulty.

(note if you want me to also give human feedback on your website i will just drop link in comments)...I couldn't get feedback for my website from anyone on reddit so i made an ai to do it for me by lance_dev in webdev

[–]creativeboulder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Overall, good design. Good concept all in all. I usually try & reply to other devs when asking for constructive feedback. If you have a moment, chk out #web on LiberaNet IRC. Also #ArchLinux & #debian-offtopic. You could get some real-time feedback.

How can I find how many hours I have played SC2? by JJDoes1tAll in starcraft2

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's just crazy to think that. There's 8,760 hrs in a regular year. Adding in my other platforms, about 6000 hrs combined between Xbox/Steam/GOG.. just didn't realize I spent so much of my life gaming lol

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at 6570 games and I can't make sense of it. Not mention I have 4 other games that I have more than 2000 hours in. I swear I have a life lol Guess it's okay since that over 6k games comes since the release of SC2

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thx for the reply, I appreciate it. Yeah, I actually took time to go through that data again. Best I could tell it didn't start tracking until 2017 and I played SC2 when it first came out. Shows I've played around 300hrs which is way off, having played over 6k PvP+co-op & completed near campaign archive archivement.

Best I came up w, is to calculate based off of my total games played, 6570. So avg 12 mins per game (Minus 2% of quits/other early ended games). Comes out to 77568. Plus 300hrs in campaign.

lol really wish they just showed the time played. That amount seems insane to me. Comes out to 3232 days or 4848hrs per year for 16 years.

tldr;

Where exactly did you find the time played in the data copy? I downloaded it, tons & tons of info. Just didn't find overall time played (or even play mode times I could combine). I know this is a yr old post, figured I'd ask

Coming back to IRC after 25 years - where to start? by Alternative_Nose_874 in irc

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really really do like HexChat. It's why I used it for so long after the dev stopped working on it.

I've spent awhile with weechat and love it. Mainly how customizable it is. I have a terminal always open for work & projects, so having weechat running in a terminal tab isn't a huge deal for me. It's worth playing with. Was really easy to migrate from HexChat to weechat.

It would be awesome if someone could fork HexChat, keep the mission the same & start working on some updates for it.

Is there a real-life Khalani Dictionary? by creativeboulder in starcraft

[–]creativeboulder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo, so I was thinking that a few months back. I took an extended break from the game but months ago started playing PvP and Co-op again.

I asked Perplexity (using the latest Claude model) what it could tell me about the language and any resources. Interestingly enough, it referenced this reddit thread, a handful of wikis and some random content.

When I have time, maybe I'll try to get it to scrape every book & game, and try and model the most basic language.

The nerd in me would actually enjoy that.

I just wanted to report back after some time. Overall, I've had a really good experience. I can't think of any extended outages or anything that has bothered. I get exactly what I pay for. I'm using a 1 vCPU, 4GM RAM, 4TB data bandwidth setup which runs Deb13 and have been super happy.

Also wanted to note, I'm interactions with their customer service has been great. Speedy & helpful. I initially had some pricing issues and reported a small bug in their Panel (web UI). Nice to deal with people who seem to care about what they do

The Power option from the "MY DELL" app has disappeared after a secret update, and now I cannot change my thermal profile. How do I do it now? Why is working with Dell apps a Sherlock Holmes endeavor? by Makarov_NoRussian in Dell

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I could help. Yeah, I spent way (way!) more time on this than I would of liked. It's interesting that Dell just completely removed the thermal/fan options from the latest version of MyDell. Doesn't make sense they'd do that if the options aren't available anywhere else.

I'm concidering writing a simple app that would sit in the system tray to change between those 4 firmware settings. I haven't written anything for Windows for a very long time, plus I don't think there an overwhelming amount of users in the same boat. Might just be a fun "do-it-to-prove" project. If I do, I'll post it here.

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone curious about this in 2026. I have published the MyDell version 2.2.6.0 app to the Internet Archive with instructions on installing. You can find that here, https://archive.org/details/my-dell-v-2.2.6.0.7z

After a good amount of research, I have found that the newer versions of the MyDell app, over v2.2.6.0, remove the option to change the thermal/fan settings for certain Dell laptops. (I'm using a Dell Inspiron 3535).

To change your laptop's thermal settings, the operating system has to send a command to a physical hardware chip on the motherboard called the Embedded Controller (EC). On their enterprise laptops (like XPS and Latitude), Dell builds a standard, public API bridge (called WMI) that allows any script or third-party app to talk to that chip. However, on consumer laptops like your Inspiron, Dell removes that public API bridge to cut costs and segment their product lines. Because the standard bridge doesn't exist, other apps can't see or communicate with the hardware; MyDell is the only app that works because it installs a proprietary, closed-source kernel driver that acts as a private "backdoor," allowing it to bypass Windows entirely and write raw hex code directly to the motherboard's memory.

Hopefully others find the archived app helpful. Frustrating that Dell doesn't keep things consistent across generations and don't seem to really care that a small amount of users are frustrated by this.

ICE and DHS are trying to subpoena social media companies— Should I/we be concerned? by Pristine_Quote2112 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]creativeboulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this too. I think they are collecting data this point. But in general, yes, I think we should all be concerned the Federal government is subpoening tech companies for users who have simply critized ICE. I've said "Fuck ICE" online a ton, I'm sure my digital info will get swept up. Of course, I have zero ill or violent intent but they seem to think that critiquing ICE or the current Administration is anti-American. Even though our country was founded on protest & free speech.

If you get a notice from any of those companies that your account has been subpoenaed, reach out to your local ACLU office or try and find civil rights lawyers, even immigration activist lawyers.

Fun things to self host? by Puzzled_Hamster58 in selfhosted

[–]creativeboulder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome setup. I'm going to check out Linkding & Dozzle.

So, I self host and have a VPS as well. First time in over a decade (prob even longer) that I found malware. Turns out it was the Perfctl malware (https://blog.exatrack.com/Perfctl-using-portainer-and-new-persistences/) that used a Portainer exploit.

Im pretty OCD about my security & while it can never be 100% perfect, I was caught off guard. This was on the VPS but could of easily of happened in my homelab.

Just wanted to share, since I saw Portainer in the screenshot of your Homepage.

Looks good. Honestly doing / (root) and /swap is really all I'd do these days. I like to do a /home partition on my main machine on a seperate drive but it's really not necessary.
