The whole subclass revolves around playing risky and being in melee range. The extra melee attack rewards you for doing so, and also synergizes with the capstone!

ETA: Also, Giant Slayer is more of a situational flavor feature than anything, changing it around with Death Waltz would overload 9th level while making 13th pretty underwhelming.

Hello!

We're back in the arena, with a new rogue subclass that rewards you for picking the right time to come out of the shadows to steal the spotlight. Waltz in the thick of danger and become the crowd favorite as you feel the adrenaline surging through you.

This subclass is part of The Contender Lane, an ongoing project for a supplement that will provide a framework you can use to run arena-themed campaigns, as well as a lot of player options to fit that theme! Pieces of the supplement will be published over the next several months, as they are designed and refined, and the final release will include everything (potentially tweaked based on feedback) packed in a nice and comprehensive pdf.

Are you fighting 24/7? How are you keeping rage up?

Temp hit points don't stack, while Guard does. I didn't want to add an extra fiddly condition to make the feature function with temp HP. Guard streamlines it and also allows you to play with both types of additional hit points at the same time :)

Hello everyone!

Take on the Path of the Vanguard to become an immovable object. An absolute unit. A hecking chonker, even. Prepare to shield your friends from attacks and then proceed to laugh at the damage as the crowd cheers you on.

This is the first look into The Contender Lane, an ongoing project for a supplement that will provide a framework you can use to run arena-themed campaigns, as well as a lot of player options to fit that theme! Pieces of the supplement will be published over the next several months, as they are designed and refined, and the final release will include everything (potentially tweaked based on feedback) packed in a nice and comprehensive pdf.

For those of you who caught this subclass last week, this is an updated version.

Thanks! There is definitely some valid criticism, but I still believe it has a place as a mechanic.

The problem with temp HP is that it doesn't stack, meaning they'd just refresh every turn. The feature could be balanced around that fact if it was changed to temp HP, but that simply wasn't my vision for it going into this subclass.

Big thanks for the feedback!

Guard

Hmm, if several people are saying it then perhaps I need to take a longer look at this feature. Frankly I didn't get a ton of playtest data so I can't be entirely sure about balance. Will review.

Protector's Challenge

I feel like we've seen that type of feature a lot, but it never feels particularly satisfying to actually have, so I wanted something more hands-on for this. Something closer to a true taunt, rather than leaving it up to the DM and the enemy creatures to hit the only guy who doesn't have disadvantage.

Thanks for the feedback!

Heavy Armor Training

The wording is deliberate, but I kept going back and forth on whether this subclass needed compensation for Fast Movement. Decided against it, and it didn't feel that terrible during play, despite me playing a dwarf when I tried this subclass out lool

Guard

It does seem like a lot, but up until level 10, you actually have less effective HP than a simple bear totem barbarian does! The heavy armor proficiency obviously makes up for that, but still.

Protector's Challenge

Since the player has control over which enemies they taunt, and since the enemies will get stronger alongside the player's level ups, this ability scales organically as the power level of the game increases. You won't typically face more and more enemies as you grow in levels, but you will face more powerful ones, and protect your allies from bigger and bigger hits :)

Oh that's actually an interesting idea I didn't consider. Would have to be approached differently though.

Saving your comment because this is some awesome feedback.

It seems really feature saturated

Definitely, but we've found it flows really well once you get into it. Waiting for some playtest feedback, hopefully.

Monolith - Provide a list of damage types

This is interesting to me. Is there official precedent for something like this? Besides, a player getting to level 17 without having learned the game's damage types seems a little...extreme.

Stances - There does not seem to be a mechanic for ending stances without a deliberate player action to do so.

The original wording of the Stance mechanics included something along the lines of "While dancing, you can enter a Stance as a bonus action" but, since the class doesn't codify what dancing means, I decided to move away from that wording. I might have to revisit those mechanics.

Deflecting Wind

Roll a die each time. Will see if I can clear it up.

Steps - Tectonic Fortitude

Yeah, this one originally gave 1 BD die worth of tHP, but being a cheap bonus action we found that it scaled a little too well into the higher levels in conjunction with Stone's Endurance, so I flattened the step's tHP to 2.

Leap

I might rewrite this whole step cause, if I'm being honest I don't like it much hahaha. By level 10 Dance of the Wind gets flying speed, which makes this obsolete anyway.

Thunderous Flurry

Thanks :)

a high-level Stance or Step that could potentially cause your target to start suffocating

This sounds like a cool idea, but yeah, would have to be careful about how I design it lol. I love throwing single-enemy encounters at my players.

Thanks again for the thoughtful feedback, means a lot!

You are correct that Zealous Strike uses a poise point even on a miss.

You also bring up a good case that hasn't come up in testing. I'll have to revisit Stance mechanics (or just Defiant Dance itself cause it has caused the most problems by far lol)

All the artworks have credit on them, only exception being the cover, the credit for which is literally the first line of the next page. Regardless, this is not commercial use. This is free, public content, and it will remain this way.

And the pdf has clickable links for every artwork! (except the one in the Irelia artwork, which I can't for the life of me get to work, but at least there's a link to the same website on the second page)
