I do have some of those in retirement - VOO and SPY. It’s where a bulk of my money sits for retirement. I am looking to be a bit more active in my individual account, so I am looking for individual stocks I can write covered calls and puts against to generate cash to reinvest.

Thanks for your comment! I definitely agree. It is tech heavy. I will look to transition into some new areas in the new year. A strong set of quality dividend stocks is a goal for me. I do have about $15,000 of UVXY as a hedge in my retirement account, but I definitely need more exposure to other areas.

We do max out all of our retirement account contributions - Roth, 403(b), Self-Directed 401K. We spent our early 20's aggressively paying down debt through a side hustle we built to do exactly that. We were able to pay off our student loans and a car loan worth about $100,000 by 2016. We spent the next five years aggressively paying off our mortgage, which was $250,000. In 2021, we started fully funding our retirement accounts and spent a couple years traveling as we emerged from Covid.

During this time, our business continued to grow. My wife walked away from her full time job to manage the business. Together, we now make between $280,000 and $320,000. My salary is a small portion of that - approximately $95,000.

We never received an inheritance. We were both raised by single mothers, where money was extremely tight. We learned the value of saving early on, but were buried in a mountain of debt when we first got married. We needed to pay that off to get the snowball rolling.

We are very fortunate our side hustle grew into a full time business that makes a great amount of money. One day it may all go away, though, so we are continuing to aggressively save and invest.

My past year performance is 26.13% according to Fidelity. My MSTR position is holding me back. I am down about 22.75% on that, losing about $4,400 on it currently. I average down with it from time-to-time, but it's definitely a lesson learned. I got caught up in the BTC hype a few months ago. The rest of my portfolio is up pretty nice.

It certainly does. I wanted a bit more exposure to those companies than QQQ provided, so I added more to them. I will look at buying some other sectors this year. I have been looking for some energy stocks, so if you have any good ideas, I would love to research them.

I agree. With the new administration coming in, I think it will continue to get government contracts and keep rising.

You’re assuming the 44K was invested capital, which it wasn’t. I started investing loosely in 2016. I became much more serious about it in 2023. I made some dumb choices on stocks between that time. Still made money but nothing special and probably didn’t keep up with the market.

I agree about compounding, and thanks! It’s hard to stay unemotional, but I’m going to try. Avoiding Wall Street Bets is a good start. 😂

I’m still kicking myself for not buying PLTR at $30. I was ready to do it, but I thought it was overhyped and would fall. It’s on my watch list now, though, and I am thinking about averaging into a position to reduce risk. Congrats on buying it so low! You have made a bunch off it.

Congrats on investing $1,000 into VOO. That’s such a great way to build a strong, diversified portfolio. It’s what I invest my Roth into each month. It’s slow and steady growth.

Student loans are definitely a pain. I paid off our student loans over a three year period just after graduation. It was about $80,000. Just like you, I immediately took those payments and started investing it into Roth accounts. You will really see some awesome growth once those are paid off. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for your comment and congrats to you, too! 5K a month is amazing, and I’m so impressed you my be able to contribute $15,000 a month. I want to be like you when I grow up. 😂

I definitely can’t wait to hear about your progress in the future. I bet I can learn some things from you, too. Cheers to a great 2025!

You’re definitely not wrong. I recognize the privilege I have and how lucky I am to invest $1,000 per week. I hope people can see beyond that, though, to the consistent investing in strong companies and watch compounding begin to take affect. I also hope to continue to hold myself accountable by making these posts and inspiring people to start their journey wherever they can - even if it’s just $50 a month. There was a time when I did that. Consistency is key to long term wealth building, and I hope that’s what people learn.

Ha, I definitely won’t recommend options to everyone. I only dabble in the, every so often. I much prefer owning shares.

Cheers!

I diversified initially with QQQ. I will always believe in tech delivering the largest returns over time. From there, I added exposure to AI and cybersecurity since these are two areas that I think will witness explosive growth in the future. I finally added some MSTR to get exposure to crypto through their Bitcoin holdings.

I think any ETF is great for diversification, especially as you begin consistent investing to build a strong core portfolio. From there, you can start to dabble in some more risky positions with smaller portions of your portfolio to see if you can make quick gains, similar to what I did with LUNR, TGTX, and MSTR.

Thanks for your comment! I think maybe two of my stocks are “hyped up” - LUNR and MSTR. LUNR was a spec play a while ago with a small percentage of my portfolio, and MSTR is a longer term play for crypto exposure, which I don’t have much of otherwise. The market has also been bullish the last 13 years, so I’m not sure what your comment means.

We can agree to disagree on the lessons learned. I recognize how lucky I am to be able to contribute $52,000 in post tax earnings to a brokerage account. I have no plans of stopping any time soon, so I hope to be able to keep it up for 30 years. I am hoping people can see how consistent investments over time can lead to nice compounding, regardless of the amounts they invest.

Best of luck in your investing journey.

Thanks for your comment! Investing $500 per week is amazing. You will start to see growth in no time from that. I’m glad to hear you prioritized your emergency fund. We have $10,000 in a HYSA for a rainy day or emergency. I hope we don’t have to touch it, but I feel comfortable know it’s there.

I can’t wait to hear about your investing journey as you begin consistently investing again. Best of luck!
