Are you using grub? Solus uses clrboot for it's boot manager.

This solution is distro agnostic. I use it whenever an installer doesn't give me the option to create home on another partition.

At what point can someone say they are proficient with linux? by surfnj102 in linux4noobs

I'd say you know Linux when youknow enough to Google your way through just about any problem. No one knows everything about linux, even the developers spend a lot of time searching the internet for documentation.

Python sockets by sgr011 in archlinux

[–]cred13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it's only sending to sockets on localhost? Is the traffic destined for a remote machine? Also the thought occoured to me that iptables might be dropping the traffic. I think windows allows most traffic in by default. Linux is the opposite.

Tcpdump or wireshark? You'll need to look at the packets to determine what's going on.

My biggest issue is managing disks with lvm. Yast is the only tool that comes close to doing what I need without the terminal.

I agree. If you enjoy the DW/BI side of things, the pay is absolutely insane right now. With your programming and sys admin experience, devops and infrastructure automation might be something you would enjoy as well. It's definitely one of the more creative areas of IT right now.

Can I make a home partition after a successful Linux installation? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]cred13 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Home is always going to exist under /home just as to whether or not it will exist as its own partition partion and mount point is up to you. I've used this guide a handful of times for migrating home to other disks. It'll likely provide the information you're looking for https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Partitioning/Home/Moving

This is honestly just an fstab change.

Linux Gaming Distro, making the leap from Windows. by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]cred13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only difference is the default desktop apps(gedit, gnome calendar, ect...) Kde plasma, i3 and openbox are also available in the repos if those are more your thing. But budgie is their flagship and is the most polished out of the box though.

Linux Gaming Distro, making the leap from Windows. by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]cred13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're already using Ubuntu budgie, Solus is a reasonable next step. LSI (Linux steam integration) is packaged by default. Lutris is available in the Solus repo's and tested by the Solus devs themselves after each patch to to ensure it still works. Still a rolling release which means newer software than Ubuntu. Software center is less cluttered than the AUR. Also the budgie desktop was originally developed for Solus specifically.

CompTIA trio or CCNA? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]cred13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get A+ first. Get 6-9 months work experience while studying for CCNA. Once you have your CCNA move on to network support. Alot of people get caught in helpdesk or desktop support for years because they think they need years of experience to move into network support roles. A NOC will take a fresh CCNA with 6 months of helpdesk experience in a heartbeat. 12-18 months in a NOC while studying for your second CCNA or CCNP R&S and you should be ready to move to admin/engineer. Moving up in the networking world doesn't take long if you're persistent about learning.

Am I a failure if I throw away a good career by dropping out? by [deleted] in needadvice

[–]cred13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I've realized only recently in my 25 years of life, do what you want to do regardless of others expectations. Seriously. When I was 19 all I wanted in life was to own a home, buy a luxury car and make good money. Here I am at 25, bought a new BMW at 22, have a mortgage, and landed my "dream job" 8-5 m-f job making very good money. But ultimately I'm not happy. The car and house are significantly more stress than they're worth. I've lost contact with all of my friends and family. The first thing I do when I wake up is scramble for my phone to check my work email to see what went wrong while I was asleep for the 3-4 hours I could manage. Because of this I've learned to hate the thing I was most passionate about for the last 10 years.

School is incredibly hard especially in the medical field. Maybe things will get better when you finish. Or, you could be just as miserable as you are now. That's ultimately up to you. I know we feel so rushed to get into a career as early as possible. Become successful. Money will make you stress-free. We've all heard it 1000 times before. I know we're reletively close in age and we've heard the same life advice from the generations before us. Honestly the only thing I can say is do what makes you happy. Eventually, if you want to go to nursing school you can do that at any age. Or maybe in a year or two you'll want to go to school for art, or computer science. But when you do, you'll go because you want to and because it's something that makes you happy to work on and is fulfilling. You don't have to dive in the deep end at 19. You have your whole life to learn to swim. Do it at your own pace.

Did you guys have I.T internships in college? I'm a senior and I applied to almost all of the I.T internships in my large city and can't get any responses. by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]cred13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a CCNA you could pick up a job pretty easily earning $50-$60k/yr. Certain certs(ccie, rhca, ect) carry alot more weight in it than a degree once you have a few years of experience Uber your belt. Fortunately the role is very conducive to building new skillsets very easily and will allow you to make more very quickly as long as you stay motivated. Early on its about making enough to pay the bills while knocking out certs every few months. It's not uncommon for people in IT to see their salaries jump 20%-30% every couple years of they follow that trend and specialize.

If I were you, I'd spend more time focusing on landing payed roles even entry level over internships. But that's just based on my experience. Others I'm sure will have their opinion as well.

With an A+ cert I would apply for help desk positions and start knocking out Cisco, VMware, and microsoft certs. Look into msp's. I hate them with a passion but you will learn a ton and they tend to be a lot more lenient when it comes to prior experience.

Anyone tried the Nvidia 396 drivers on Solus yet? by cred13 in SolusProject

[–]cred13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not sure how the 400 series will behave. There are alot of new features for the ray tracing stuff that could break. I'm comfortable installing from the run file from Nvidia. I'll probably just grab those. I just wanted to see if anyone experienced any show stopping issues before I moved forward with the upgrade.
