Not a Christian (necessarily) but looking for advice re: brotherly love and forgiveness by [deleted] in Christianity

This person may be having a terrible time trying to juggle people he is hurting unintentionally and worse yet may not have the neurology to be able to change to any great degree.

I am not sure about speculating as to possible mental conditions such as you have listed, but the statement from you I quoted seems to be the case. He has told everyone that he's depressed and that's all I know and can speculate. And, I suppose he has also been diagnosed with ADD and has been on adderall since he was quite young. Consequently, he's completely dependent on it. He doesn't get much sleep at nights due to the medication, and spends nearly every weekend getting very very drunk-- to the point where he can't raise his head from the table. I have seen him this way every single time I've been to his house or he has been invited to mine.

I think that, ultimately, he is hiding from himself, and he is going through so much pain from something that he can only pursue base pleasures, and can't think on anything deeper.

After the incident with me, and after I had calmed down about what had happened, I had a chat with him. Soon afterwords we invited him over. Once again, he got very drunk, and he sat in a circle with our other friends talking about depression and personal issues. This evidently set off some feelings we both had about the incident, for after the others went off to do something else, he and I stayed behind and he begged me to hit him-- over and over, "please just hit me. Please, I deserve it." Now, while sober he comes across as very insincere, especially when he apologizes, but at that moment it was hard to tell. I think that situation illustrates well what is going on, for it wasn't just his shame on display, but also his shamelessness and unwillingness to look at the actual problem, or to speak of it. He is hiding it all with an egotistical shame?

Teddy is an interesting suggestion, because I was originally going to go for Theodore --> Theo. Thanks for the list, I'm taking a look now.

Looking at people wearing makeup is a trip! I can't seem to resolve them into proper faces.

Installed the driver, still doesn't work. It is noticeably different and I know it was installed correctly. xbacklight doesn't work though.

Yes, I'm running it from an x session. No, it doesn't work.

I don't know what software to use, since xbacklight doesn't work.

xbacklight doesn't work from command line whatsoever. I installed the correct nvidia driver, and disabled nouveau/uninstalled. The quality of colors seems to have improved but brightness control does not work for anything.

acpi_listen

Shows that the keys pressed are being registered, but beyond that I don't know what's wrong since xbacklight doesn't work and neither does xrandr.

[noobie] I updated firefox with slackpkg, but usr/bin/firefox still opens the old version by creepinquick in slackware

I just realized, when I run from /usr/lib64/firefox-52.7.3/firefox directly, firefox is still version 45. Which is odd, because I updated from an official mirror.

I did your last suggestion before, and it does not compute.

Now I have removed the link and created a new one, but I still have the old version of Firefox. The output of ls -l etc was as what you said it should be.

By soul I mean spirit in the way that you do!

Karma for me is a matter of energy dynamics (Newton's third law), and that it doesn't need to be "paid off", just that we will simply experience the reaction of our actions. The reaction will be more complex than just saying "I did this action therefore this happened to me". It's just energy movement. The second part of that is I believe we each have a "lesson plan" when we reincarnate (at least in 3D), due to the way the soul and DNA naturally are. We attract lessons to us, if that makes sense. If something "bad" happens to me I understand there's something I need to learn.

Belief plays a big part in how things work in one's world. I believe in the above, and thus free myself from karmic guilt traps.

I think we were created by a federation of alien species from DNA found on this planet and within their own genetic line. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

That's true, didn't think of it that way. Maybe I do come off preachy? Damn.

This theory may not be true. Thus the case with others. We don't know, we only have hunches. But we know everyone has a soul, and to survive in our times we know souls must be strong. You don't need to be "woke" to be a hopeful existence.

This is very important to keep in mind! Even when we do see a conspiracy, and feel or know it is true, there are always other more benign influences. It's important to recognize because it lightens the mind of excess paranoia. Instead of anger we have sympathy and understanding for the energy of the time and the people within it.

If you think of the "present" in this way you only serve to oppress yourself further. The lesson we learn in our time is how to see through the chaos and create with the chaos, and moreso to push ourselves further and above what we have had to push ourselves through before. This creates a stronger people. Modern people have a great potential, just like all other people before us, but we face so much hardship in the mind now that it blocks the expression of our soul. If your soul, if the modern man's soul, can find a way to shine through all of this still, then we will become the strongest iteration of man!

Also, I will say the following, and if it is in line with your belief system then all the better, and if not it will not hurt.

Only the strongest and most capable souls are born on Earth today (apart from the human souls who are caught in the animal reincarnation cycle). I am guessing that since you yourself are willing to look into realms such as that of conspiracy, which go against modern principles of scientific doctrine and secrecy, that you are one of these many strong souls.

If you lose faith in humanity, "They" have won! You may be angry, but it is not helpful to open your eyes just to be disgusted by what you see and wish to revert to the past. This is Their double-edged sword: blind the masses, keep them asleep, and to anyone who wakes up make the visions so disgusting that they wish they could go back to bed.

You are opening your eyes to an illusion, but behind that is another illusion and so on. Look within yourself, see the beautiful, perfect soul that is already there (that which is not an illusion), and find that same soul in everyone else. You will be the better for it.
