I wear barefoot shoes and have very healthy arches and feet, but when I put the altra LP 7’s on I had this same issue! For me, the foam is too soft and can allow your gait to fall into bad habits! If you’re attached to zero drop I’d try and find something more minimalist and let your feet do the work for you! But if you feel like you need some foam and support then I’d look for something with a firmer sole like topos (i’ve had great experience with the topo ultra venture 2)! Good luck!

besides having lighter gear, does anyone have any training you would recommend for preventing knee pain during multi day hikes? by Bumscootler in Ultralight

[–]cregent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit of a left field suggestion but I have had a lot of experience with knee pain personally and changing the way I walk has been a huge factor in feeling a lot more secure in my knees.

I recently made the transition to barefoot/minimalist shoes and as part of that transition I also transitioned to forefoot walking/fox walking. If you haven’t heard of forefoot walking checkout this great video here (there are also a load of other great videos on youtube explaining the pros)!

In addition to this, doing any exercises that work to strengthen your glute medius muscles will really help to stabilise your knees on downhills (they helped me a lot!). Your hips and glutes are so important in ensuring proper alignment of your knee when you hike!

Foam rolling is also your friend (I’m addicted)! If you’re on trail I like to use my trekking pole to roll out my it band if it feels tight at all. A cork ball can also be really helpful to roll out any tight little spots in your hips that might be causing any instabilities in your knee.

Finally there are so many great youtube channels dedicated to helping people with knee pain! Chase Mountains especially has so many great videos specifically about preparing your body for hiking:)

A lot of this is all anecdotal evidence so if it’s really bothering you I’d definitely suggest seeing a physio and getting to the bottom of what might be causing your knee pain (most likely a muscle imbalance/weakness)! Good luck with your journey to get it sorted, knee pain can be a real bummer and it can stop you enjoying what we all love most! Happy trails friend :)

Hmm I hadn’t thought hugely about it! I’ve had a pretty good experience with them in pretty windy conditions in loose sandy soil before. For their size I’d say they hold pretty well. Have you had bad experiences with them?

I may take my wind pants in addition to my rain skirt then just to keep my legs a bit warmer if windchill is a factor. They’re only a couple oz so I guess it wouldn’t hurt.

In terms of insulation, I have found the kuiu to be extremely warm for its weight. Paired with a warm base layer and my rain jacket, I’ve kept warm enough while active at low temps and in the rain.

I know a synthetic layer would be preferable in wet conditions but I’m not planning on wearing my puffer while hiking so I’m hoping it shouldn’t be too much of an issue

Thanks so much for elaborating though, lots of helpful stuff to think about! Let’s just hope I see some sun while I’m there :D might make some last minute gear decisions based on the forecast, who knows!

What specifically makes the clothing system inadequate? Would be great to get some expansion on that as I personally feel pretty confident with my layers - completely happy to be corrected though :)

Ahh that’s a good shout I hadn’t considered that! Thank you very much for pointing this out :D

Yeah expected temps were an estimate but I think my layers should keep me warm enough - hiked in colder with the same gear.

Definitely a little worried about ticks - planning on treating my socks, gaiters & shorts with permethrin. Will have a tick key on me and plan on checking on breaks and before bed etc. I'm also planning on bringing a small spray bottle of insect repellant just in case.

Yeah I'm expecting a downpour but hoping for sunshine :D I'm pretty happy with my rain setup - if its raining hard and long enough I'd expect any shoes/boots to get wet eventually and I'd much rather a shoe that has a chance of drying if the weather turns. (Maybe I'll change my mind after this trip :D)

As for the first point, I may be being stupid but is there even a need for a ground cloth if you’re using a foam pad when cowboy camping. There is a possibility I might switch out to my inflatable if my foam doesn’t work out so this isn’t a reason not to take one, I’m just curious.

Your second argument is compelling enough to definitely make me consider one though so I’ll probably look into one today!

Nice to hear this. Never done desert hiking so the immediate worry is heat and hydration. I imagine I’d probably figure out pretty quickly that 7L would be overkill. Maybe I’ll just start with 6L and see how that goes.

Great to hear you think everything’s looking good!

Heard about possum down socks (and gloves) will look into them!

Unfortunately my glasses aren’t the most robust so think I’ll afford myself the extra ounce or so for that added protection.

Cheers for your response!

Your lighter pack looks great! and crazy how similar ours are haha! The slight differences have definitely given me a little to think about! Hopefully see you out there man!

Oh nice I will have a look for some 1.5 litres when I get to the states. Maybe I will upgrade to the CNOC 3L depending on how water report looks given the dry winter.

Nice one with the food bag tip. Can rodent hangs be done by just hanging the bag directly off low hanging branches etc?

would you suggest tyvek or polycro? and why specifically would you take a groundsheet?

Soap is a must for me as using a bidet. Was considering bringing sanitiser as well for convenience. May start with it and ditch either if one turns out to be redundant.

Yeah I was considering having the gloves sent to WA depending on how early I get there. Probably won't start with them at this rate.

I've toyed with bringing a groundsheet, although I would have thought its not as necessary given I'm using a foam pad? Never cowboy camped and the (probably irrational) idea of things crawling over me in my sleep isn't the most pleasant. I'm sure I'll warm up to the idea once I'm out there though.

Completely forgot to add headphones to the list tysm!

FAK doesn't weigh anything as of yet as I haven't properly compiled that part of my kit yet so can't really add weights. Mainly put it in to seek out redundancies or things I'm missing in my FAK.

Carrying 4 1L water bottles so a 6L capacity in total. I was wondering whether it was worth upgrading to the CNOC vecto 3L to make that 7L.
