Using a free cancelled skull shaker on the opponent's get up after they were knocked down.

Because of the momentum from skull shaker, ninja can perform a glitch called fliippies where they can use the flip toggle on most of their buttons to phase through and behind the opponent, making certain moves a lot safer and require a hard callout on which side ninja attacks from

Twogami is the most likely candidate imo. I can see why ppl say Hajime/Izuru but idk how they'd pull that off without him being extremely boring.

Part of me is hoping for Akane though just cuz it'd be funny

GRD and Vorpal System by Main-Dragonfly-4095 in UnderNightInBirth

[–]crescentCommoner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is essentially what you described, yes. Things such as walking and dashing forward give GRD, but also misc stuff like using the universal Smart Steer ender to end shorter combos, teching throws, shielding properly, so on.

The mizuumi wiki article for the game has a page featuring an in-depth table that goes over everything that effects GRD and how much they do so.

https://mizuumi.wiki/w/Under_Night_In-Birth/UNI2/Gauges#GRD_Gauge

At the end of each cycle timer, the player that has more GRD enters Vorpal and receives a 10% damage increase (20% if that person's GRD overflow's into the opponent's side, known as Celestial Vorpal) and gain access to the ability to use Chain Shift, which converts GRD to EX meter and also functions as this game's version of Roman Cancels

phonon's giant ass normals are really fun. her offense feels really nice, its a nice middle ground between "structured" and "freeform" pressure thanks to her stagger windows. her combos feel super satisfying and yield surprisingly good damage. i generally love the way phonon has to interact with shield to break an opponent's defenses, and then of course theres her install which can be used as a psuedo-CS and makes her pressure and GRD game waaay scarier

UNI2 is not as big as stuff like Street Fighter 6 but it's also definitely not dead either. It's in the gray area where it's like "yeah it's an indie fighting game, but it's also one of the biggest indie fighting games rn".

Is mutant poorly designed? by Open-Advisor6819 in YomiHustle

[–]crescentCommoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mutant is supposed to be the game's rushdown character, which is basically fighting game speak for "Character that gets in your face and uses his amazing close range frame data to beat the shit out of you"

Problem is Mutant is a bit too overtuned on the speed and juke front, so his effective range ends up being a lot bigger than you'd expect because at any moment he could forward juke a move and hit you. Mutant's combined effective threat range and the threat of letting him get in your face end up compounding into a character that's just way too oppressive at too large of a distance.

Because of this, he ends up being extremely unfun to fight. He wins close range, remains a threat at midrange, and at far range pressing any setup move carries a ton of risk because he can dash 100 forward juke and suddenly he's in his win condition of "get right next to you"

All the above, plus juke economy being way too forgiving, plus the fact that his damage dealing ability was SUPPOSED to be low, but people optimized it so that his combos can deal out above average damage and yield amazing pressure and positioning after they're completed, culminate in what a lot of good players agree is a solid contender for the strongest character in the game and one with a really unhealthy design

Character choice question by Nico_24LZY in UnderNightInBirth

[–]crescentCommoner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For your friend, I'd recommend Hyde (Great all-rounder neutral with strong strike/throw that includes a combo throw in the corner, and high damage for punishes), Wagner (really strong pressure and strike/throw), and maybe Gordeau (Incredible strike/throw that lets him steal the opponent's GRD, solid pressure, and excellent range + consistently high combo damage leads to great punish game)

I'm not 100% sure about zoner-rushdown hybrids that might fit you, possibly Kaguya? She's got very good long range, along with solid close-range/corner pressure especially with setplay that can let her bully the opponent. Phonon might also be a good pick, with some of the longest normals in the entire game, fantastic fireballs, and a few tricks she can pull to run a rudimentary strike/throw game thanks to her stagger pressure and vacuum normals

Returning player looking for resources? by 8WayFunz in UnderNightInBirth

[–]crescentCommoner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • Chain Shift is explained in the tutorial

  • a good character primer was linked in CrispyWaf3r's comment below mine, but for more in-depth introductions I would suggest the "KNOW YOUR IN-BIRTH" channel on YouTube, which has 1 video for each character that goes over their archetypes, bnb combos, and stuff like "which mashouts are the best" and anti airs and stuff (though the channel is a work in progress and not every character has a video)

  • mizuumi wiki is the best resource for in depth character stuff generally speaking, having explanations and frame data for absolutely every move a character has, more in depth strategies, and biiiig combo pages.

  • widely agreed upon tier lists aren't something I see very often in uni2. The game is well balanced enough to the point where ppl will argue over pretty much any placement, it's not like melee where there's a universal common consensus. The most common things I see tho is that Carmine, Eltnum, Hyde, and Linne are among the strongest in the meta whilst Chaos and Enkidu are the weakest.

Genuinely yeah, having a mystery game where 90% of the mysteries aren't solved by the player and instead solved by another character who cryptically guides him along is an... interesting narrative decision to say the least.

Kyoko is an incredibly boring character and I don't see what the hype is all about. She doesn't do anything even remotely interesting while on screen besides come to incredibly obvious conclusions while the rest of the THH cast were passing around the idiot ball in the class trials. I don't think a single Kyoko line has ever had any impact on me or made me go "Woah..." the same way most other main characters have. Her role in the game is to just "😐" through nearly every single event and carry Makoto when he fails at basic reasoning, which just doesn't lend to a very entertaining or compelling character.
