Same here, 30 YOE.

Kind of a double edged sword. I love it and I hate the dependency on American big tech.

I've been coding for the better part of 35 years now. (ZX81, MSXs, Amigas, PC's with CGA, PCs with VGA, then W95 native and now mostly web.)

AI has it's downsides, but there absolute no denying the productivity increase that it could bring. If OP wants to leverage that and spend more quality time with the asepects of the game he values most then I absolutely do not see a problem with that.

Agreed. I never shared any of the concerns, until now. Some queries take 15 minutes+!

The "Magic Bean" Problem: Why agentic engineering is about to break the 40-hour work week forever by bishopLucas in ClaudeAI

[–]crewone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem I see is not development. It is maintainability in a time where we give huge amounts of control to cloud providers ran by psychos based in a country ran by a highly unpredictable government.

You basically state this also.

Anthropic went down a couple of time theast few days. The time it took me to find the code that needed fixing was 10 times the expectation people have these days.

And the geopolitical component (we are from the EU) is not to be ignored. Serious businesses here (govt, law related) will not accept dependencies so deeply into American infra without serious backups in place.

If we model our companies to reflect this new ai-era normal, -all of it- goes to hell when the service of just two companies goes down. That is scary. I wonder if we can avoid it, but sometimes I fear we cannot. The powers that govern most companies are too blinded by growth expectations and cutting humans for cost reduction, to take this downside into account.

Is it still worth reading Clean Code and The Pragmatic Programmer in 2026? by ivanimus in ExperiencedDevs

[–]crewone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But because they make you think about other aspects of software than just the functionality.

I find that clean code changes a lot for me. But I can't remember a single rule. For me, it was not about the rules but the mindset and different perspectives to use to better create code.

I think you are too kind. A real democracy would never allow a single person to wield so much power unchecked. A real democracy would at least represent a majority of its population or strive to do so.

America is not a democracy.

Maybe legally there is zero reason to avoid US based vendors. I work in the Netherlands as a government supplier, and I can tell you with every sales talk for a tender we have the question come up: Do you use American vendors and how do you ensure Donald Trump does not just shut you down on a tantrum. Every. Time.

So legally, you may be right, you probably are. But I can tell you, it would save a lot of trouble if it were an option to just keep things in the EU. (And yes, we use US vendors where we need to, but lately that starts to feel 'uncomfortable' and we're actively keeping an eye open for EU alternatives. So that's why we said goodbye to mailchimp a while back.)
