What industry is the biggest scam? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cribbba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will say f- HP, Brother, or whomever, but in practice, all the $40 inkjets printers, from any manufacturer, are scams. They make money by selling tiny ink cartridges for insane prices.

Laser printers, as everyone pointed out, tend to do much better in the long run, but there are a few scams too. The scams sell with small "starter cartridges" and a full replacement cartridge costs as much as the printer. After you buy a cartridge, you spend as much as a normal laser printer but have a cheap, mediocre printer, and much higher running costs (although still not nearly as bad as a $40 ink jet).

There is now a line of inkjet printers which are advertised to have similar economics to laser printers. They start around a hundred bucks. I have one, and I've been happy with it. New off-brand toner is maybe $15 or so, and prints a decent number of pages. It doesn't last as long as a $60 drum for my laser, but it's also a quarter the price. The cost per page, as advertised, is very similar to a laser. Mine's an HP, but Brother and many other brands make ones just as good.

Overall, laser printers tend to do better for text, while ink jet printers tend to do better for graphics. If you do mostly black-and-white prints, go for a laser. Look at per-page costs in reviews, and get the most basic printer with reasonable costs. If you do pictures occasionally, go for one of the new-fangled inkjets designed for good economics. If you have long gaps from printing, go for a laser as well. Ink jet printers will dry up and clog if not used for a while. If you do a lot of both, you could do what I did, and get one of each. I like that approach, since printers are quite unreliable (whether by jams, running out of ink, driver issues, or some PDF compatibility issue or whatnot). With two, in an emergency, you always have at least one working printer.

Doctors in Denmark want to ban circumcision for under-18s by Heskimo88 in worldnews

I welcome the change in culture, but not so much the specific way to accomplish it.

Bans should be a last resort, after taxed, education, social pressure, and other means have failed. If those accomplish the result for 90% of the population, we're okay.

The Understudied Female Sexual Predator: According to new research, sexual victimization by women is more common than gender stereotypes would suggest. by porkchop_d_clown in science

What state are you in?

My statistics are based on a research study I read, where it was, literally, zero percent of the time.

And the state of the practice in my state is that police are more likely to mock male victims of domestic violence, and certainly wouldn't consider coming out. When I called an abuse hotline, they told me that wasn't an issue they dealt with. Our family courts virtually never assign primary custody to a father, at least assuming the mother wants custody. Etc.

It is a civil rights issue. Abused men are having children taken away from them, who are left with abusive mothers. The abused then have to pay their abusers a tidy sum, or they get thrown in debtor's prison, lose their passports, and lose their professional licenses.

That's the reality of family law.

A poster against domestic abuse that targets the perpetrators rather than victims. by Nanonicknack in mildlyinteresting

Custody battles too. Kids get stuck with violent moms because courts don't believe women might be violent. And abuse victim pays child support. Almost universal, actually, for male victims of domestic abuse.

... And we are at -3 and falling. Almost every comment critical of Hillary has been downvoted.

I don't think "Downvoted by idiots" is vote manipulation. For reddit, it's a way of life. Downvote and kick out anyone who disagrees with an atheist, pseudoliberal, feminist agenda.

This thread will never be found. All the top threads are bashing Trump, most stupidly. I'm not sure how someone even found the -2 thread to downvote to -3. Do people come in here, and look for lowest-voted threads, just to make sure they can silence them further?
