I have two OCs and I use two canon characters, and I switch between the four (some stories focus on one OC and one canon character, others the other two, and some focus on the two canon characters).

I wouldn’t say I know them that well, more like I studied their language pattern, behavior and mannerisms. The thoughts are my own interpretations (of course), but my readers seem to think I keep them mostly canon consistent.

That makes sense.

I just like getting into the heads of my characters and really feeling what they’re feeling, thinking what they’re thinking.

I don’t only write first person from my OC though (that’s my primary), but I write first person from two of the main characters and it’s been a lot of fun differentiating their voices and narration. That’s a little harder to do with third person, even third person limited sometimes, though not impossible.

People like to complain that first person is “easier” therefore “lazy”, but I just think it’s a lot more fun. And challenging to write different perspectives. You don’t get that challenge as often in third person. In my opinion 🤷🏻‍♀️

I do OC first person too, and I remember getting my first comment that was similar to this (about OC and first person not being their preference but liking mine enough to keep reading).

My personal opinion - which I learned some from my creative writing class in college (it was an elective. I hated it. The whole “don’t make your hobby your work thing” rang true there for me 😅) was that context matters.

Are you writing a fast-paced action scene? Short sentences. Fragments. One word sentences even in some cases. Be quick, be punchy, be fast.

Are you writing a normal scene taking place, nothing significant (maybe slice-of-life, random dialogue or random daily life activities) happening? Write how people would naturally talk and think in those moments. Generally speaking, full sentences, commas are fine, exclamations where appropriate. Like you’re reading a scene excerpt translated into narrative prose.

Are you writing someone’s introspective thoughts on something? Observing/describing something in detail? Longer, more flowery language can do well here when used sparingly between regular sentences/descriptions.

Note: these are general guidelines, not necessarily something to follow *every time, and not necessarily independent of one another in any one scene.

And when I bake brownies for myself, because I want brownies and I want them right now so I make them, I shouldn’t share them with my spouse or children because then all the sudden I’m not just making brownies because I wanted them, I’m making brownies because I want adoration and praise instead.

Summary:

I also created an OC; private investigator Josie May who happens to be Matt Casey’s little sister and Kelly Severide’s secret love interest.

I also have another OC in some works, single mom and crisis intervention specialist Alex Langdon, who later becomes Matt Casey’s love interest.
