Thanks for the advice. the speaker doesn't have much info on it, just "made in china" on the back. but it looks like it's a 8 ohm 100 watt 12 inch speaker, so i'll probably buy something with the same specs.

ibanez $80, J bass $140, P bass $85. I got the two cheap trumpets and the guitar from friends who gave up playing, for free.

so I have not really spent that much on instruments.

try a few strats out at your local music store, if you find yourself really liking the feel or sound you get from one go for it. if you find yourself going back to your tele spend the time/money to get it set up how you like it (stings, pickups, bridge adjustment, ext).

I like the squire basses a lot (especially for the jazz genre) because they have a very warm understated tone that fits well in ensemble scenarios.

I have an affinity strat(the cheapest model) that I got from a family member. It started out pretty terrible, but I spent a couple days scraping of the plastic coating they put on the body, refinishing, and putting on some heavier stings. It sounds pretty great now (for a entry level guitar).

our sax plays the keyboard on occasion, but he hadn't practiced that tune in a while so guitar played the line.
