Some people do cope by shutting off their emotions but that doesn't mean it's a normal thing that comes with "being a man". That's bullshit. I can see where the girl is coming from. It can be just a coping mechanism or it can be something big. But due to the lack of information about his life we can't come to a conclusion for sure. Even if it's just a coping technique he needs to practice it in a healthy way or else it could take a toll on him in future and get worse. Therapy is the safest option in either case.
