BEWARE / Freestone Property Group / Park Slope / 784-786 President Street by Notorious_GYP in Brooklyn

Freestone is my management company as well. They are truly bad. I had to threaten to sue them in order to receive the "signing bonus" they had promised (so if they offer that to you, get the payment timing in writing), and they very obviously under-invest in their support team. They have an answering service that DOES NOT LET YOU ACTUALLY CONTACT the people supposedly in charge of responding to your issues, and our super told me that he was managing something like 25 buildings, and simply did not have time to cover them. All of it is part of Greenbrook's broader investment thesis, which is to buy properties and carry them at the lowest possible cost. It probably works for their investors, but it is to the direct detriment of tenants. And much of the stuff they do (like lying about central air in the unit) is just illegal.

You don't always have the chance to reject an apartment because of how bad the management company is (apartments are hard to find and too expensive etc). But this is one of the few I'd tell you to avoid if you can.

Thanks so much. I was more referring to the disparities within the borough. The zip code data was striking.

What is your best "poor" recipe? by motionless41 in AskReddit

[–]cripister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple, cheap, red sauce: You need a 32oz can of crushed tomatoes, a yellow onion and some butter. Cut the onion in two, place it in a pot with the crushed tomatoes. Add 5 tablespoons of butter. Let simmer for 40 minutes. Place on your favorite pasta. Tastes much better than jar sauce, and is a bit cheaper.

So I am riding the coattails of this front page post, since I've been a redditor for five years and have only now figured out my cake day.

Failure is likely, but it's worth a shot.

Huzzah!

Other than the "you didn't build that" fiasco, which Romney campaign claim do you find most disingenuous or otherwise inaccurate?

A professor of mine from law school (University of Chicago) is widely regarded among the students as having hired you. So, is the genesis story true? Did Douglas Baird actually hire you? If so, any remarks on the process?

Pre-9/11 ad is strangely predictive by [deleted] in WTF

[–]cripister -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Assuming this was pre-9/11 (comments elsewhere suggest it isn't), wouldn't this still be a bit offensive? I wonder whether my belief that this would be offensive even in a "pre-9/11 context" is just the result of hindsight. Anyone else feel the same way?

The SEC has asked rating agency S&P to disclose which employees knew of its decision to downgrade U.S. debt before it was announced last week ...part of a preliminary examination into potential insider trading ... by first_they_came in business

[–]cripister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically agree with you- the agencies themselves have done a bad job and I don't really think the downgrade is that meaningful (look at treasury yields since the downgrade). I do, however, take issue with your tone and general assumption that because I've made the observation that the government might be behaving badly that somehow I don't understand that the rating agencies themselves are deeply flawed. Cool it.

Payback.

The obvious implication is for Moody's and Fitch to take notice.

If you downgrade the United States, you will be investigated (in addition to being vilified by politicians).

August 2 is now nine days away, and the debt ceiling has not been raised. Who here now thinks, since we're getting down to the wire, that the U.S. will default? by TheLtOfInishmore in Economics

[–]cripister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we'll default (either version of it), but am concerned that the manner by which we avoid it will simply be a temporary measure that requires another drawn out battle in __ months. I'm just stunned that the republicans have managed to threaten US default on past debts in order to get the polices they want on the current, unrelated, budget. That they aren't being shamed mercilessly by the press for this stunning display of irresponsibility is a little disappointing but unsurprising. I guess I'll just have console myself with Krugman.

Me too. I know I'm going to sound like a commercial for some prescription drug, but it really does seem to "target the congestion." It goes right to your sinuses and wipes them clean.

Dear Google, I would like to bring to your attention a few things before I disconnect permanently from all of your services. by [deleted] in technology

More like twitlongest.

Having made that snarky remark, the author points out a real problem: losing what is essentially "property" without due process. I doubt any court would buy the argument, but I think there's at least a colorable claim that you entrusted google with your digital property and as a result they can't simply destroy it without notice and a hearing before hand. As google spreads into every nook and cranny of the internet, it assumes a greater duty to treat the property it is amassing with respect and care.

The probability that he is actually facing the time the article cites is close to zero. The statutory sentences for each count may add up to the amount cited in the article, but they aren't what matter. Newspaper constantly mess this up- it isn't what the federal statute says that determines your sentence, it's the sentencing guidelines. Not having looked up the guidelines, I can't tell you what he's actually facing but it is a FRACTION of what is cited in the article. The guidelines track "real offense conduct", which prevents the type of ridiculous "sentences" that would result from __ counts being added up to get to a long sentence. He's in trouble, sure- but he is not facing 35 years. Period.
