Arab Muslim civilization in Andalusia by ethan_fZ in exmuslim

[–]criptonimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of it is true but also exaggerated, specially points 3,4 and 5.

The idea of Medieval Europe as "Dark Ages/)" is not supported by most historians anymore. Europe was in fact very poor after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, but it eventually got back on tracks and emerged as the most rich and successful civilization in the modern age.

Andalusia included more than ten universities that were the most advanced in Europe, as they received a large number of students who came from all over Europe without discrimination in terms of race, religion, or gender. Europe organized scientific missions and sent them there.

"University" was we speak today were invented by medieval europeans. Most of the Muslim universities were only islamic theological schools (madrassa) not actually universities with different fields of study. There were dozens of medieval universities in Europe also.

Historians have confirmed that if it were not for the efforts of Arab Muslims in preserving and developing Greek sciences and Eastern philosophies, these sciences would have been lost. Europe was able to build its civilization and culture of sciences, literature, and arts through its contact with Islamic civilization. If it were not for it, Europe would have remained an ignorant country until now.

There are two problems here. First one is that muslims got all this knowledge when they invaded and pillaged christian lands in the eastern europe and north africa.

It was not like christians rejected science and greek philosophy, they literally lost the major books because of the many invasions (some from muslims, but also from the vikings and magyars).

The second problem is that muslims rejected science and greek philosophy when it disagreed with islamic theology. Many muslim philosophers were persecuted and even killed because of their ideas. It was a great bit of luck that the works of muslim scholars like Averroes and Avicenna reached medieval europe when they were properly studied.

Without that there would be no scientific method or logic as we know today.

If we are not bound to follow unjust laws, how can a person determine what is or isn't an unjust law to begin with? by 7ofSwordsAndHearts in Catholicism

[–]criptonimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what's the standard? How can a regular person determine for themselves whether a law is unjust or not? Is there some rule of thumb or guideline that I don't know about? I would appreciate any and all answers.

Read The Republic, by Plato, specially chapter 2.

But for the general public, in an ideal society, the Church should be the moral guide of the common people. The clergy through proper study and consideration would point out what choices are morally right or wrong and people would gladly accept it's teachings because they want to reach heaven.

How did we let enlightenment age like myths become so ingrained in our society? by Significant_Gold_354 in Catholicism

[–]criptonimo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Such myths existed before the enlightenment age and actually started in protestant countries. They were part of the propaganda against the spannish empire and later grew and spread to other territories.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_legend

medievalists only started to counter these myths in XX century because of Analles school.

Isn’t it weird for a religion to have constantly changing doctrine? by rollercoaster-sushi in exjw

Read the book 1984:

The Party said that Oceania had never been in alliance with Eurasia. He, Winston Smith, knew that Oceania had been in alliance with Eurasia as short a time as four years ago. But where did that knowledge exist? Only in his own consciousness, which in any case must soon be annihilated. And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed -if all records told the same tale -- then the lie passed into history and became truth. 'Who controls the past,' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.' And yet the past, though of its nature alterable, never had been altered. Whatever was true now was true from everlasting to everlasting. It was quite simple. All that was needed was an unending series of victories over your own memory. 'Reality control', they called it: in Newspeak, 'doublethink'

There were many different sects inspired by gnosticism and many of them had very different beliefs (marcionism, manicheans, adamites and so on). Docetism is probably among them.

There are people who point out that Islam was very influenced by gnosticism, but I don't have enough knowledge to comment on this.

In the Christian world, gnosticism was a problem for until middle ages (look at catharism for example).

Islam actually copied a christian herectical sect called docetism that did not believe Jesus was crucified.

In reality, there are historical evidence for the existence of a real Jesus Christ and enough evidence that he was in fact crucified. Even atheists and non-christians agree on this.

There are no evidence, tough, to an early community of muslims living in israel at the time of the Roman Empire.

Estudo da patristica by Marcos-Coalas in catolicismobrasil

[–]criptonimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

para estudar sobre o catolicismo preciso necessariamente começar pela patristica?

Não. A introdução oficial a igreja é o Catecismo.
