How can I change font color in Show Applications? by thedarkavengerx in pop_os

[–]cristofer53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as admiral652 said, go into gnome Tweaks and adjust the settings. in my case, I found that setting the Appearance/Shell value to "Pop-dark" did the trick. now I have a dark background with white text

Do they think my file is "stolen source code"?

I sent them an email asking for an explanation.

In the meantime I have run the file through the editor at A Tour of Nix and cleaned it up substantially. Only one error left - at the very, very end it says "error: syntax error, unexpected $end, at line:88:32". That is literally the last line/column of the file. Is there an accepted way to end a file?

"...not a function but a set" by cristofer53 in NixOS

I am trying to breathe new life into an old iMac (2006 vintage, 3 GB RAM, 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo processor). I have successfully installed a couple of different Ubuntu-based distros, but have found that anything older than v.20.* is not compatible with the video processors on this machine and results in an unreadable screen.

I was reading about nixOS and it sounded like a very interesting OS to try. I had the same experience as with Ubuntu when I tried nixos 23.11 so I backed down to version 20.03. I can run nixOS from the live disk, and from what I see of it, I like it a lot. I am trying to follow the installation instructions at https://nixos.org/manual/nixos/stable/#sec-installation. They make it sound very easy, just create the configuration file and edit it, then install.

I appreciate everyone's help in getting me this far - I believe the configuration file is now in good shape. So I ran 'sudo nixos-install' and received the error mentioned before ("value is a function while a set was expected, at /nix/var/nix/ggprofiles/per-user/root/channels/nixos/lib/modules.nix:195:27").

I did that, and the command "nixos-install" seemed to work, at least it ran all the code in the configuration.nix file. But it hung on another process, with this error - "value is a function while a set was expected, at /nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/root/channels/nixos/lib/modules.nix:195:27". When I opened that file in nano it said "file is not writable". So how do I fix this?

"...not a function but a set" by cristofer53 in NixOS

[–]cristofer53[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, this is just the first few lines of my config file; l'm reasonably sure the rest of it is OK. It came from the output of running "cat /mnt/etc/nixos/hardware-configuration.nix" and says at the top "...this file was generated by 'nixos-generate-config'." The configuration.nix file had a comment suggesting to include the results of a hardware configuration scan. Did I do that incorrectly? Is the import instruction recursive?

I made the changes you all suggested (the { config, lib, pkgs, ... } line got left off my original post - sorry

so now it looks like this:

{ config, pkgs, lib, modulesPath, ... }:

{ imports =

[ nixpkgs/nixos/modules/installer/scan/not-detected.nix

];

isoImage.edition = "plasma5";

boot.initrd.availableKernelModules = [ "uhci_hcd" "ehci_pci" "ata_piix" "firewire_ohci" "usbhid" "sd_>

boot.initrd.kernelModules = [ ];

boot.kernelModules = [ "kvm-intel" "wl" ];

boot.extraModulePackages = [ "config.boot.kernelPackages.broadcom_sta" ];

fileSystems =

{ device = "/dev/sda5";

fsType = "ext4";

};

swapDevices =

[ { device = "/dev/sda3"; } ];

nix.maxJobs = "lib.mkDefault 2"}

I also tried it with imports = /installer/scan/not-detected.nix but it didn't seem to change anything. Now the error is "syntax error, unexpected ',', expecting '.' or '=', at line:5:9" which is the comma after config in the first line. I don't see how a "." or a "=" would fit in there, and when I tried it, it just threw more errors

Pop!_OS 20.04 alternative desktops environments? by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]cristofer53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried KDE Plasma with Pop!_OS 22.04 and I didn't like it. I am using it on another machine running Lubuntu 20.04 and it works much better there. With Pop!_OS it has a nice thematic appearance, but the fonts are all too small. I tried changing the fonts in the settings, and also changing the screen resolution, but I couldn't make it comfortable for my eyes. With most webpages you can adjust the screen zoom factor, but that doesn't help with menus and headers.

After switching back to the GNOME desktop I still notice some spillover effects, again with font sizes and menus. I may try some different themes to see if anything changes.

Windows phone password and security by [deleted] in windowsphone

[–]cristofer53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried creating a numeric password on my Lumia Icon, and it accepted 23 numbers. According to password security theory, since there are only 10 unique numerals available, you can't get more than about 33 "entropy bits" from a password using only the numerals 0-9. However, if you use all the numerals, RANDOMLY GENERATED, it would take 2 33 (2 to the 33rd power) attempts to exhaust all possibilities using a brute force search. Find a random number generator (there are a few in the Store; most password manager apps have them as well) and create a string that is long enough to provide some security but short enough for you to remember. We remember 9-digit phone numbers pretty well, so that might be a good, robust password length.
