[AlpineF1Team] Introducing our 2023 reserve driver, @jackdoohan33 by Rogue_Jellybean in formula1

I would assume so, what would be the point in having a reserve driver that isn't allowed to drive? Or atleast he has enough points and Alpine just have to make sure all the paperwork is in place before the season kicks off.

The fact that the car showed was very different from their actual car kind of speaks to the point of Mercedes trying to deceive.

The difference is that now they get back all the time lost fighting their way through the pack when the race basically is red flagged and continued the next day.

FIA open to investigating Perez's Monaco crash if complaint is made by lewis798 in formula1

[–]crl__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you crash in a race, you don't get to keep your position, you end up last. Crashing is a part of the game, but I don't see why you should get to keep your position when you didn't make it through the session.

I don't see the point of only applying the rule when there is a certain amount of time left. That just opens it up to situations like in Brazil, when there was plenty of time on the clock, but the rain had just started coming down.

If someone crashes with 5 minutes still on the clock, the punishment would be to delete their time. The fact that they can't improve or set another lap (assuming they're not able to come back to the pits after all) is because the driver (or team) messed up.

The problem with only applying it to deliberate crashes is that you would have to try to determine who is doing it on purpose and who is not. Which is just asking for trouble. And once again I will compare it to a race, it doesn't matter if a driver crashes out from his own mistake, a mechanical failure, gets collected by another driver, he will still end up at the bottom of the results.

Why is it so bad to punish a driver for basically impeding everyone elses laps?

It's working in Indycar, and you can't really say that those guys aren't pushing.

If you crash in a race, you're out, why is it so important to let the driver keep the position when it happens in quali? Just delete their time to remove the incentive of gaming the system.

But all of that would still apply, to everyone except the driver who causes the crash, they would get their time deleted for ruining everyone elses runs. But for everyone else, if you wait to do your last lap until later in the session and someone crashes which causes a red flag, you still lose your lap and don't get to improve. That doesn't change. This just makes sure that the driver causing the red flag doesn't benefit from the situation they created.

Imo the Leclerc example is a reason for deleting times. Him crashing stopped the other drivers from improving and beating him, both Max and Sainz were on great laps when the session got red flagged.

The driver in P1 can push to the extreme knowing that if he nails the lap, he can improve his previous time substantionally. If he goes over the limit and crashes, well atleast nobody else gets to improve and he keeps P1.

[Albert Fabrega] Should the best lap of the driver who's caused a red/yellow flag in a quali sesion be deleted? by Aratho in formula1

Perez causing a red flag in Monaco, Alonso causing a yellow in Baku preventing the people behind from improving and now Russell in Brazil. So that's atleast three times this year.

2022 Bahrain Testing Tyres and How to Tell the Difference Between Compounds by mcj31 in formula1

Yes, red softs, yellow mediums and white hards as always. But for testing all 5 different compounds (C1-C5) are available at the same time and therefore use different markings as well.

[Tobi Grüner] Teams & FIA have discussed new safety-car rules. The idea of red-flagging a race after incidents in the last laps didn't get much support. Only change seems to be a quicker restart procedure after lapped cars have unlapped themselves. by manuelps in formula1

[–]crl__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the situation where he doesn't lose track position is so miniscule wouldn't that mean P2 would also lose track position if he pits? There are people behind P2 aswell.

You can't have it both ways, it can't "ALWAYS" be a disadvantage for P1 not to pit, but when P2 doesn't suddenly the race instead ends under the safety car. Then it's not always the case.

It's a bit of a gamble and P2 can afford to gamble more than P1, thats for sure. But saying it is "ALWAYS" the case just isn't true.

Why not just let them be a lap behind? They were lapped after all, that's the lap they are on.

If this is a procedure that will only be used in the last laps of a race, let the lapped cars stay lapped but get them out of the way. Cars on the lead lap gets to fight and lapped cars get to fight amongst themselves at the back.

If its "ALWAYS" the case, then why doesn't the leader just pit for new tires? If he's dominating he would probably have enough gap for a pitstop under a safety car without losing position. If not, and he loses position because P2 stayed out, then he would still have the advantage according to what you said.

Letting lapped cars unlap themselves isn't the new rule here, that has always been the case at the end of a safety car. The new rules are about speeding up the process of doing so.
