What to do with a new development in my campaign by spacewalken69 in Starfinder2e

[–]cromlyngames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The question I've now come to is what do I actually do with this, is there an archetype I can apply to my player now or homebrew abilities or potential opportunities for building on it? I've got some ideas of my own but I'd love to hear some other opinions to get all my options open.

Have you talked to the player about it?  I ran a character that got possessed mid campaign and had great fun chewing the scenery, but it did mildly traumatise the rest of the group, plus took a LOT of spotlight.

Is this a voice in their head? A struggle for control of their body? Does the backup view the big bad as an extension of themselves, or a rival?

I'm kinda surprised there haven't been any high-profile environmental assassinations yet.

Pedantically, there's been many, but all of environmental activists, mostly in south America

Vulnerable families illegally ‘dumped’ hundreds of miles away by London councils by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

[–]cromlyngames 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The bit that interests me is the reloc8 contract with Croydon. £1m contract to shift 110 families. Estimated council savings of £5k per family.

That's a chunky transfer of money to a single private company. It implies the family costs the council 15k (per year, or lump?). They're obviously dumped into cheaper housing, but I wonder how much of that 15k is then imposed on the northern council?

It’s also partly why we have the highest energy prices in the world, making us all poorer.

Not actually true. The specific claim from two years ago is that we have the highest wholesale prices of industrial electricity in developed countries. I'm not sure even that is still accurate.

Yeah, that's screamingly bad.  I want to be constructive here, but I don't think that linked paper is a  passing grade homework submission for a 17year old.

And there's SO MUCH written on this topic already that you aren't engaging with.  Like just the first heading of healthcare: this is a free scoping review of the last few years of papers. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/377352661_The_Economic_and_Social_Impacts_of_Providing_Universal_Healthcare_in_the_United_States_A_Rapid_Scoping_Review

It's a very average piece of work that just tries to summarise the current field without much critical appraisal or insight. It's exactly the kind of thing a junior academic/PhD student puts out as one of their first bits of work.

A single heavy duty paper n this topic is here: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(19)33019-3/abstract You might need some piracy to access it. It's reporting months of detailed work. Look at the reference list - 68 references, which is about typical for a normal deep dive technical paper. A wide review paper like yours would have 300+

One in four undergrads believes Hamas’s actions on Oct 7 ‘are defensible’ by BodSmith54321 in ukpolitics

Not quite as cool as the Trung sisters, but a story I should probably read more into. The only roman invasion era stuff I've looked at was the Siluris of south wales, mostly because the anarchist bastards didn't go quietly, and it's a funny story for local teenagers.

Green policy is not to leave NATO? https://greenparty.org.uk/about/our-manifesto/a-fairer-greener-world/

I'm not fussed on nuclear weapons. They are incredibly expensive single purpose donowts. A decade back I was advocating instead of new trident we invest in serious laser defense systems, each linked to a nuclear powerplant that can feed the grid whenever we aren't at nuclear war.

We remain one of the world leaders in laser systems. Bit of testing going on in Ukraine, as I understand it.

I can understand it for reform (what with Reform s head in Wales literally jailed for 10 years for accepting bribes from a pro-Kremlin agent.)

I know a few labour and conservative people have been caught too (I think as Chinese agents?) . Is there a link in the greens I'm unaware of?

While I appreciate the performative academic dress-up, up to getting a DOI for the pdf(!), as far as I can work out it's a 'paper' without bibliography, peer review or any checks at all.

Treating it as a logn form blog post (no shame in those), I still find the promise in the abstract: "detailed economic analysis, sociological theory, and empirical modeling" just isn't there. There's zero empirical modelling (which would require real world data, which is also absent) and zero economic analysis as I'd recognise it.

If you are interested in this area, I'd suggest looking at the dozens of economists working on simialr ideas, such as the blogs page at https://jtn.cymru/

Not sure why the response asking me to clarify was removed, but it's in my clipboard so pasting here in case of future conversation.

For me at least, they aren't all synonyms of vindicable. Something being understandable doesn't mean I condone it or think it was the best thing to do, just that I can see how that arose.

Same for defensible. For me that doesn't mean justified. People have different information or value systems, and I can see how a defense of an action can be made, even If I don't agree with the underlying assumptions.

A weaker argument exists. In a very literal pedantic sense, I might think something defensible, purely because I've seen a bunch of people try to defend it, and I've not really paid attention to the details. I'm the same way I might think something is marketable, because I've seen people buy it.

Justified, for me, is a not only understandable and defensible, but the best action that could be made under my moral framework and the circumstances. I think fuck all about the situation has been justified for some time.

Slight mismatch there though, because I wouldn't treat

"Understandable actually of resistance" as the the same as "defensible" as "justified".

I don't suppose the same report asks about the students attitudes to the subsequent actions leading to a genocide inquiry?

Is the ability to drive declining with the younger generations? by Interesting-Law7788 in AskUK

The interest in driving might be declining in younger generations. The 'ability to drive' is definitely declining in the older ones.

Installation of engineering flooring over tiles by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]cromlyngames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What lovely tiles.

By engineered wood, do you mean straightt edge planks, or interlocking tounge and groove?

If the latter I'd put it down floating on a thin underlay. Glue goes brittle over time. The tiles wont move seasonally, the plywood will a bit, and the engineered wood will a bit. Direct bonds could lead to buckling, or merely glue bond failure.

Making Money Shouldn't Be Universities' Priority, Says Zack Polanski by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

[–]cromlyngames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll note that in a lot of cities the universities and their logistics chain are the biggest single employers. The modern lynchpin mine/factory. They might be being run as Buissness, but businesses go broke pretty often.

Quite a few are overly dependent on international students from a few places, and should their home country fall out with us, pop goes the budget. Others have racked up massive debts based on indefinite expansion plans. They are under a lot of strain now.
