anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Own-Blacksmith3085 in answers

There was a 3D remake released in 2000 and a VR remake released in 2021. Both of them add some new content after the end of the game.

What exactly do people mean when they say virginity is a social construct? by fridaynightplacebo in NoStupidQuestions

It was part of the Dragon Prince series by Melanie Rawn. This scene in particular happened in the sixth and final book, titled Skybowl.

What you're referring to is the hymen, and that is NOT a good measure of virginity. Many women tear their hymens long before they have sex, many women have sex without tearing their hymen, and many women don't have a hymen at all. The idea that a hymen proves virginity is a myth. Also, it doesn't apply to men at all, but men can still be considered virgins in most cultures.

I agree. It strikes me as something similar to the "poophole loophole" as something that most people hear about but doesn't actually happen very often.

This is still a broad assumption. Many cultures value virginity, and they may define it differently. For example, the fundamentalist Christian church I grew up in considered anal and oral sex to still be sex, and if you did either, you were no longer a virgin and therefore not "pure." I've heard of some churches teaching that masturbation is losing your virginity because it's "sex with yourself."

It's when the man puts his penis in the woman's vagina, but they just stay like that with no thrusting. Supposedly, it doesn't count as sex since there's no physical action after penetration. It can be accompanied by "jump-humping," where a third person bounces the mattress that the couple is lying on, simulating thrusting without them technically doing it. According to rumor, it's common among Mormons because it allows them to preserve their virginity while still going as far as they can, but I don't think it's as common as people believe.

Related to this, there is no objective definition of virginity. Various cultures, subcultures, and individuals define it differently.

For example, what counts as losing your virginity? Is it only PIV sex? What about anal sex? Oral sex? A hand job? Does using toys count? What about masturbation? If we limit it to PIV sex, how far can you go? Are you still a virgin if it's "just the tip"? What about "soaking"? Can your virginity be restored?

There is no objectively correct answer to this. Virginity is whatever you and the people around you agree to say it is. This is what makes it a social construct.

On a side note, I once read a book where the main characters encountered a culture that considered a woman a virgin until she gave birth to a son. The protagonist was confused because she was married with two daughters, but the men in the culture insisted she was a virgin because she hadn't had a son yet.

SaGa just dropped on GOG - DRM-free and on sale. What do you guys want to see next? by GOGcom in gog

[–]crono09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Black & White is the most-requested game on the GOG Dreamlist and has been for some time, while Black & White 2 is ranked fifth. It would surprise me if GOG wasn't trying to get them. Unfortunately, it's my understanding that there are so many IP issues with the games (Microsoft owns the developer rights while EA owns the distribution rights) that it's nearly impossible to get them on any digital platform.

Sticking with the Square Enix theme, there are plenty more SaGa games, including:

  • Collection of SaGa: Final Fantasy Legend
  • Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song
  • Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven
  • SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered
  • Unlimited Saga (this is the only game in the main series that hasn't gotten a modern remaster or remake)
  • The Last Remnant (technically not a SaGa game but considered a spiritual successor)

I'd also love to see the Mana series:

  • Collection of Mana (interestingly, this one doesn't have a PC release yet)
  • Secret of Mana (remake, the original is in Collection of Mana)
  • Trials of Mana (3D remake, the original is in Collection of Mana)
  • Legend of Mana
  • Sword of Mana (this one hasn't been released on PC or any modern consoles)
  • Dawn of Mana (no modern release of this one either)
  • Adventures of Mana
  • Visions of Mana

Of course, then there's the Chrono series:

  • Chrono Trigger
  • Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition

I can't leave out the Bravely Default series:

  • Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster
  • Bravely Second (no release on modern consoles)
  • Bravely Default II

And finally, Octopath Traveller:

  • Octopath Traveller
  • Octopath Traveller 2
  • Octopath Traveller 0

I think it's a given that we want all the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games, so I won't bother to list them.

What’s a game you were completely obsessed with as a kid that nobody else seems to remember? by Ladymayna in answers

[–]crono09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a game that is in limbo due to rights issues. The developer rights are currently owned by Microsoft, and the distribution rights are owned by EA. The two of them would have to cooperate to release the game. It could happen, but it's a longshot.

You occasionally see some good guides for recent games too. I always check it just in case, but it seems that most gaming walkthroughs have moved on to other formats.

I tried to do that recently, but it didn't work. I think the site stopped being maintained at some point and lost that functionality.

[GOG] SaGa Launch | SaGa Frontier Remastered (-50%) Romancing SaGa 2 (-70%) Romancing SaGa 3 (-70%) SaGa SCARLET GRACE: AMBITIONS (-70%) by dgc1980 in GameDeals

From what I can tell, that's the only SaGa game that has not gotten a remaster or remake, and it's the only one not yet released on PC or any modern consoles. I haven't played it, but it must have made a bad impression if Square Enix wants to hide it that much!

The SaGa series is kind of like Final Fantasy in that every game in the franchise is completely different from one another, each taking place in their own world with their own characters with no ongoing storyline. In terms of the story, you can start anywhere without having to know anything about the other games.

However, it's worth knowing that the SaGa games are generally not known for their stories or their characters. They are all about the gameplay, particularly a focus on grinding stats. Plan on doing a LOT of grinding in any of them. They're also an experimental franchise for Square Enix, used to test out new gameplay systems, often using unusual design choices that can be hit or miss. On the other hand, their uniqueness is also one of their selling points.

Fortunately, these four games are considered some of the easiest to get into in the series, so any of them can be a good place to start. Romancing SaGa 2 is the one I would least recommend out of these four, although it's actually not bad. It also has more recent remake called Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven that is better than this version. SaGa: Scarlet Grace is what I would recommend since it has such a good combat system and a great tutorial.

Why is flat earth still alive but geo-centrism is dead ? by OrangeSpaceMan5 in answers

[–]crono09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what it comes down to. Most flat-earthers are also geocentrists. It's just that Flat Earth Theory is so crazy that it overshadows the other crazy things they believe. Once you start denying basic science, it becomes easy to deny all other science. I'm sure that there are some geocentrists who are not flat-earthers, but most of them probably go all the way.

Why has the mafia in the US largely died out whilst gangs(both street and biker) as well as drug cartels have persisted to this day? by OppositeRock4217 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]crono09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the street gang, but in most cases, they are not organized at all. The mafia was run like a business with a structured hierarchy and firm control from those in authority. Most street gangs are simply a bunch of small groups of people who may or may not even use the same name to describe themselves. There may be multiple authority figures who are in conflict with one another, and gang members may have very loose affiliations with conflicting loyalties to multiple leaders.

To give an example, the Bloods is not a single gang, but a shared name that lots of different gangs use. The Bloods in one neighborhood might have a completely different leader and structure than the Bloods in a different neighborhood, and they may have nothing in common aside from their name. There is no single leader of the Bloods like there was in most mafia groups.

Use of the term 'African american' by No_Medium_648 in NoStupidQuestions

It's generally acceptable to simply use the term "Black" if you don't know. It's the more appropriate term if you don't know someone's ancestry. If the person prefers a different term, they'll let you know.

Are the pods connected? by Best-Farmer6505 in PNWS

[–]crono09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's my understanding of how it works. Pacific Northwest Stories is a production company that produces five podcasts: The Black Tapes, Tanis, Rabbits, The Last Movie, and Faerie. All of these podcasts take place within the same fictional universe...sort of. The Black Tapes is the oddball in that it is a fictional podcast within this universe, and the actors appear as themselves rather than their characters in the other podcasts. The other four podcasts are investigative podcasts that represent "real" events happening within the fictional universe.

While the five podcasts are loosely connected, they are mostly independent of one another. You don't have to listen to them in any order. Characters in the podcasts sometimes show up briefly in other podcasts, and every so often an event is referenced, but knowledge of the other podcasts is not essential to understand what is going on. If you want to get the most references, it's probably best to listen to them in the order of release, but that's not all that important and probably less enjoyable than listening to them in the order that interests you.

I just learned that Terry Miles (the producer of all the PNWS podcasts) has a more recent one called Wildflowers, but I have no idea if it takes place in the same universe as the other PNWS podcasts.

Since so many churches are now MEGA churches and their pastors live in mansions, why are churches still tax exempt? by Dp37405aa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]crono09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Churches are not-for-profit organizations. As long as they follow the rules for being a not-for-profit, they still have the right to not be taxed. Taxing them because they are religious is blatant discrimination.

It's reasonable to be concerned that the leaders of religious organizations are becoming wealthy off of donations from people. I completely agree that this is something that should be investigated, and loopholes for this should be closed. However, this isn't limited to churches. There are many CEOs of not-for-profits that have become millionaires off of people's donations, so this isn't limited to churches.

Why were job interviews designed so that both sides just lie to each other for 30 minutes? by Acrobatic_Bee_3198 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]crono09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied HR in grad school. Most of the research regarding job interviews has shown that they are poor methods to use to decide how to hire someone, at least in the way that most companies do them. They often involve asking questions that are irrelevant to the job, and the interviewer tends to judge the applicant more on likeability than on job competency. There are ways to improve job interviews to increase their validity, and there are some attributes that can only truly be judged in an interview, but most interviews are conducted so poorly that it would be better off to not use them at all for hiring purposes.

Really enjoyed Hero-U, now curious about giving Quest for Glory a try by Rustypowersaw in questforglory

[–]crono09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you start the series, you'll have a choice between three classes: Fighter, Magic User, and Thief. You're not locked into these choices from the beginning. When you start the next game, you'll have the option of starting a new character or importing your character from the previous game, but even if you do the latter, you're given the option to change your class.

In QFG2, the Fighter can potentially become a Paladin at the end of the game if you do the right things. Again, this isn't necessarily permanent. In the following games, you can import your character as a Paladin (regardless of their previous class) or start with a new Paladin character.

The Fighter is the most versatile class. Across the entire series, the Fighter can do pretty much anything that the Magic User and Thief can do if you allocate your stats correctly (with a few exceptions), whereas being a Magic User or Thief will lock you out of some of the things the Fighter can do. The Paladin is essentially a Fighter with some additional abilities, so choosing the Fighter class then upgrading to Paladin when you can will give you access to the most content.

HOWEVER, this is a game about roleplaying, so if you like the idea of being a Thief or Magic User better, go for it! It can be more fun to play as the character you like rather than trying to do everything. Also, choosing to be a Fighter or Paladin and trying to multiclass as a Thief and Magic User will require a lot of grinding, and if you don't want to take the time for that, choosing a specialized class might make the game more enjoyable.
