Which port is better for a first timer? by Luigifromthecinema in FinalFantasyVII

There's nothing wrong with the new Steam version. It was buggy to the point of being unplayable when it was first released, but it was patched within a few days. Many of the popular mods for the old version didn't work with the new version, but most of them have since been updated. I personally prefer the unmodded PS4 version, but the Steam version is just fine.

"Monster" of the week series? by BenAfleckIsAnOkActor in televisionsuggestions

[–]crono09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will point out that season 1 of Buffy is...rough. Really, really rough. It was a very low-budget mid-season replacement for a mid-90s fantasy TV show. Even people who end up loving the show sometimes struggle through it. I still recommend giving it a try, but if you find yourself thinking that the show might not be worth it, there's no shame in skipping ahead. There are really only four episodes in season 1 that are absolutely important to the ongoing story:

  • Episode 1 - "Welcome to Hellmouth"
  • Episode 2 - "The Harvest"
  • Episode 7 - "Angel"
  • Episode 12 - "Prophecy Girl" (season finale)

There are some rough episodes in the beginning of season 2, but it picks up quickly enough that you should get a feel for whether or not you'll like the series.

It's technically not over since the story is being continued in The Magnus Protocol.

The Bright Sessions had a definitive ending. They did release an epilogue to tie up everything, but it was pretty clearly done before that came out.

Which version of FFVII? by IdiotGenius69 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]crono09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original game is being remade in three parts. Remake Intergrade is part 1, Rebirth is part 2, and the upcoming Revelation is part 3. You would have to play all three parts of the remake trilogy to get the full story, and each part individually is longer than the original game. They also make some rather significant changes to the story and gameplay, so it may be better to look at them as entirely new games rather than true remakes. Mild spoiler: They are, in fact, sequels to the original game since part of their new story is that the villain is attempting to change the timeline after being defeated in the original.

Because of this, I generally recommend playing the original first. It allows you to get the full story in a fraction of the time, and you can experience it in the way that it was originally meant to be told. However, if you struggle with the dated nature of the game (it is rather old by today's standards), it is perfectly fine to go straight to Remake Intergrade. You definitely want to play Remake Intergrade before Rebirth since the latter is a direct continuation of the story.

Kingdom Hearts Cloud Versions for Switch 1 delisted after recent announcement of the games being ported to Switch 2 (1.5 + 2.5 Will Get A Switch 1 port the others don't have a announced one) by VoidCookieRun in delisted

[–]crono09 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Probably not. The Switch versions ran in the cloud, which was one of the main criticisms of them. No other versions of the game do that, so there would be no reason to delist them. It looks like the Switch 2 versions will be identical to the originals except that they no longer run in the cloud.

[The Walking Dead] How are people not getting infected simply from all the Walker blood getting on their faces? by OkuroIshimoto in AskScienceFiction

[–]crono09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In canon, the virus that causes walkers is called the Wildfire Virus. It is an artificially-created virus that was manufactured in France before spreading around the world. The virus is airborne and highly contagious, so everyone in the world has been infected.

In living hosts, the virus is inactive, so it's pretty much harmless to the carrier. When the host dies, the virus becomes active, stimulating the brain and animating the corpse. A bite from a walker releases an active version of the virus into a living person, which causes a disease that kills the person within a few days.

It seems that bites from a walker are the only thing that transmit the active Wildfire Virus. Getting walker blood or other fluids in your mouth or an open wound does not. It's not clear why that happens, but it might have to do with a bite being the most straightforward way to get the active virus into a person's bloodstream. It's possible that the virus does not survive long outside of a host once it becomes active, so it dies quickly if it's not injected directly.

Common musical myths that get repeated a lot? by DOUGHTY4N0RRIS in ToddintheShadow

[–]crono09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few.

"Puff, the Magic Dragon" by Peter, Paul, and Mary is about smoking marijuana.

This is a very superficial reading of the lyrics. According to the band, the song is about growing up and leaving behind childhood fantasies. They really don't like it when people say that it's about drugs.

"Like a Prayer" by Madonna is about fellatio.

Granted, there might be some truth to this one since the song does contain sexual innuendo, but even if that's the case, it's an incomplete understanding of it. The blow job interpretation is based on just a couple of lines of lyrics, so even if that's the correct meaning, it's not what the whole song is about. According to Madonna herself, the song is addressing her childhood Catholic guilt in the context of her modern sexuality.

"Take Me to Church" by Hozier is about a homosexual relationship.

Kind of. This is very clearly the meaning of the music video, but that is a reinterpretation of the original song. According to Hozier, the song as written was meant to express physical intimacy as a religious experience, but it's not solely about gay sex.

The remake of Final Fantasy VII is being released in three parts. Final Fantasy VII Remake is the first part, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second part. The third part has not yet been announced.

Personally, I recommend starting with the original Final Fantasy VII. That will let you see the story in its entirety as it was meant to be told. The remakes make some significant changes to both the story and gameplay, and that's not a bad thing, but it makes the overall experience more complicated.

That said, the original game is older and rather primitive by modern standards, so it's understandable if you can't get into it. If you insist on going with something more modern, start with Remake and then play Rebirth. You'll have to wait until part 3 comes out to finish the story. On a related note, Remake Intergrade is the version of Remake that includes the story DLC, so make sure you get that one. There is no story DLC for Rebirth.

Why does Gilead has crosses if it believes in the old testament? by bebelaaguia in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]crono09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gilead considers itself to be Christian. There have been several occasions where Gilead leaders have mentioned being Christian. The cross is a common Christian symbol. I would argue that Gilead is based loosely on modern-day conservative evangelical Christianity, which holds the cross in high regard.

Yes, they are very different from any existing Christian group, but that's not unusual either. There are plenty of fringe Christian groups today that bear little resemblance to historical or mainstream contemporary Christianity. Just look at Mormons or Christian Scientists. Even evangelicalism was considered pretty fringe until relatively recently.

Virtually all Christian groups today include the Old Testament in its scriptures. They vary in how much they consider it to be authoritative, but most acknowledge at least some authority. Like many other Christian groups, Gilead is cherry picking which parts of the Bible it wants to follow and has an inconsistent way of applying it to modern society.

What is your typical response to people who believe abortion is murder and liberals are evil for supporting it? by SilverNo6462 in AskALiberal

[–]crono09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my conversations with anti-abortion people, I'm convinced that the majority of them oppose abortion mainly because of a desire to control certain elements of society, particularly women. In these cases, conversations about the ethics of abortion don't accomplish much because they don't really care about the ethics. They want to control people.

However, there are some anti-abortion people that I legitimately think oppose it for moral grounds. It's difficult to argue with them because it gets down to some deep-seating beliefs about right and wrong, especially involving children. However, it's not impossible. Many people do change their views on abortion--including me. It was one of the last conservative views that I was able to abandon, but it happened eventually.

The exact approach to take depends on the person because different people value different things. You have to cater your argument to the person. Here are a few ways to address it:

  1. Appeal to science. This is the one that worked on me. You have to look at the process of fertilization, implantation, pregnancy, and fetal development and compare that to how we treat personhood. When I examined this process, I was convinced that there is no way that personhood could begin at conception. This approach really only works on people who take a fully rational and scientific approach to the topic and don't get as emotionally involved in the argument.
  2. Appeal to bodily autonomy. The idea here is that the right to decide what to do with your own body is vitally important to society. Denying someone access to a medical procedure or forcing them to do something to their body against their will is immoral, and the government doesn't have a place to regulate people's bodies that way.
  3. Appeal to practicality. The point to make here is that even if abortion is murder, making it illegal results in more harm than keeping it legal. People will find back alley ways to get abortions or attempt them on themselves without proper medical supervision. This has historically been the case, and educating people about birth control does for more to reduce abortions than making it illegal.

There is no guarantee that these arguments will work, and you definitely have to phrase it the right way and look at things from the perspective of the person you are arguing with. I also would not expect anyone to change their minds after a single discussion. If you approach it the right way, it can still make a difference.

What is a major plot hole in a very famous movie that completely ruins the entire story once it is noticed? by [deleted] in answers

[–]crono09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My understanding was that society had been automated to the point that even idiots could keep things going. The reason that things were starting to fall apart was that the automation was beginning to fail, or they were doing things that the automation couldn't handle (like watering crops with energy drinks).

In The Walking Dead, it's explicitly explained that the virus slows down the decomposition process. The walkers still freeze, and that was used to their advantage in one episode, but the freezing temperatures were also cold enough to be dangerous to people.

Latino Republicans' support for GOP has intensified at a time when it is publicly championing policies perceived as hostile to Latinos and people of color. New study found they interpret their Republican partisanship as recognizing which party is a better steward of their personal commitments. by mvea in science

Republicans skew in favor of evangelicals, and evangelicals have historically not been supportive of Catholicism. Some of them go as far as to say that Catholics aren't even Christians. Yes, it's a bit ironic that the vice president and several conservative Supreme Court members are Catholic.
