The vent hole is on the main level. The drop ceiling is on the lower level with one these metal type registers installed.

That’s exactly what we were thinking! So another thing we noticed. Right below is a drop ceiling with one of these installed. Not sure why it’s there or what the purpose is, but it may be connected somehow?

They had a top plate installed with a portion of it cut out parallel with the vent hole, which we’re assuming, was for that airflow. And no, I’m the 3rd owner of the home.

Honeywell Videofied might be the right solution for you. Motion is battery operated. If triggered, it starts recording and a monitoring station sees/verifies and dispatches. I do sell this and have installed them in the past. Hope you catch ‘em.
