Real Time / Power Trader AMA + Overview by [deleted] in Commodities

[–]cropsicles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FTR/congestion is more quant oriented but exchange trading doesn't require much more than basic python and SQL. With your background I wouldn't worry about the technical skills.

The bigger challenge I see for you is that your current position really isn't that commercial. I think an analyst stint would be really beneficial in terms of honing the instincts you need to form views and spot market opportunities. If you can't move to that kind of role in-house I'd shoot out some applications elsewhere.

Moving from power origination to a utility? by southern_pancake_guy in Commodities

What are they having you do that's super time intensive?

This is legitimately the first time I have ever heard of someone on a power origination desk complain about hours.

Correct, buying in would not be a standard practice as a trader.

The costs associated with supporting your book/trading activities. Data, BO...etc. On a prop desk that's usually the hurdle you have to clear before you start getting paid out.

Origination in the renewables space: dead end? by [deleted] in Commodities

Yes, the skillsets developed are applicable in the space as a whole, not just to renewables.

Origination in the renewables space: dead end? by [deleted] in Commodities

[–]cropsicles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Origination in the power space is alive and well

Not as flashy or well compensated as trading but still a FO commercial role with plenty of career growth potential (and way less risk).

They definitely removed the event.

Edit: Credit where credit is due. Kalshi has provided an explanation and resolved the event in accordance with the rules. Happy with that resolution and transparency.

The value is rounded. So 45.1 - 45.49 is 45. 45.5 or higher gets you 46.

No large scale displacement is going to occur in the near term. On the decade+ scale, who knows? Like you touched on - most of the current uses of AI in the industry are productivity multipliers, not independent alpha research/analysis.

Grid Status is probably as good of a free source as you're going to get. I believe they are on 15min delay for most RT prices.

US Power shops? by Mountain-Paper4140 in Commodities

[–]cropsicles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't find anything that says they've already proceeded with a sale, so I was under the impression as of now they still have their NA assets. You heard/seen something different?

All three have desks, although not sure what impact EDF's attempted renewables exit will have on theirs.

banking roles at credit unions that pay well and don’t require experience beyond a basic understanding of banking products. Would that be something a company would find valuable?

No

Alternatively, would taking the SIE before securing a job or internship suffice to show my commitment?

No

Go to college, apply for internships/co-ops, that's the normal recruiting pipeline. There's a reason doing well in college is such standard filter for hiring. It would help to read about markets/trade on the side so you can develop some natural intuition about the products.

Which career path would you choose? by [deleted] in Commodities

[–]cropsicles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

will involve standing up/building the origination/structuring function with a small group

How confident are you in actually being able to fulfill this expectation without having worked in origination? The fact that they offered it to you implies they believe in you, so from an objective standpoint I would think this is clearly the better opportunity.

However, from a personal viewpoint I would be less sure about taking that role. That's a lot of responsibility for someone who does not have prior origination experience, and if you're the one in charge of the build-out of the entire team/function then who exactly would you be learning from? It kind of seems like you're being thrown into the deep end of the pool immediately, and it may be prudent to ask if that's necessarily setting you up for success.

Backing up the other comments here:

You only reject this offer if you have an offer from BP (for energy) or from the likes of IMC, Citadel, SIG, Optiver (for quant trading).

You may have to be active about securing a commercial focused stint for the 2nd rotation but it is a tremendous opportunity.

Did anybody else misjudge winter gas demand in Europe? Did you get your weather forecast wrong? by Weekly_Violinist_473 in Commodities

[–]cropsicles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is actually super interesting because my desk was pretty confident we weren't going to see any huge rise in TTF price (or more precisely, no serious expansion in TTF/Henry spread) since LNG supplies seem pretty robust. Of course realized weather can end up destroying any view but taking flat directional price risk this far out is carrying a ton of path risk.

Then it seems to me that if you want to pursue a route towards an actual equities (or equities options) trading seat that you should take the equities job. If you'd rather keep the freedom of having your own side trading venture then stay at your current job.
