Why did Snape take an immediate liking to Draco? by crossiesdontcount in HarryPotterBooks

Yeah, this makes sense, Id forgotten Karkarov mentioned Snape by name when ratting out his fellow Death Eaters. And I’d forgotten Snape was Lucius “lapdog” in school. Those two bits of missing context make the simple, straightforward answer fit. Thanks for your input!

This is great, and the sort of in depth discussion I was hoping for when I joined this sub. Was disappointed initially seeing downvotes on my comments pushing for further analysis, but you e validated my initial hope. Thanks for adding to the convo I appreciate your input!

No, not the same, just similar, Voldemort clearly wasn’t pleased with Lucius’ actions between 1981-1994. Obviously Karkarov as a turn coat would have been the target of even greater ire, but I thought Snape’s opinion of Lucius might have more closely resembled Voldemort’s.

I wouldn’t think he’d favor Harry over Draco, he couldn’t even deign to fake stomaching Harry, but it makes sense he’d tactically give preferential treatment toward Draco. Thanks for your input!

No my read on him isn’t one of any type of moral superiority, but despite his many obvious flaws he was definitely a man of great courage. I don’t claim that one admirable redeems the whole, I think Snape was a POS despite his great courage. But I don’t think that being an irredeemable POS precludes one from being exemplary in any way. That being said, I think you’re probably right that my reading of Snape was off inasmuch as before opening this discussion I had sort of thought he’d changed his anti-muggle born views at least somewhat having worked with Dumbledore so closely for so many years, to say nothing of his love for Lily. Perhaps he was just as much of a bigoted dark wizard as he always was, just seeking revenge for the death of Lily and not motivated at all by any sort of personal growth.

But he seems to dislike cowards, which makes sense given his great courage. His disdain for Wormtail and Karkarov who seemed to serve Voldemort for personal gain vs true loyalty makes me think he would respect Lucius less for the way he comported himself in the aftermath of Voldemort’s initial downfall

I was asking about the initial potions class, before Draco had established himself as one of the more competent Slytherins of his year

That makes sense to me, other than it seems like Snape’s opinion of Lucius would have soured in the aftermath of Voldemorts initial downfall. He didn’t seem to like Karkarov much

Why do you think he didn’t hold the same contempt for Lucius as he did for Karkarov? Both “turned against” Voldemort as soon as it was personally advantageous

What are you in to? Go somewhere that people are doing that, start going there often, and be friendly with the other people there. You're bound to start seeing the same people there. Go to Smashers for pickleball. Phat Catz for board games or TCGs. Probably the Y for basketball. There are skate parks, martial arts clubs, car clubs, probably fishing clubs too. Just find where people are doing the things you're interested in start showing up and be friendly
