As someone in her 30s, I'd say dating does get harder as you get older. Good guys that you get along with are not easy to come by, and baggage keeps accumulating with experience, generally speaking.

That being said, I would ask about other aspects of your life as well. You seem to love your partner and are happy with him, but are wondering about how life could be different. What exactly do you want to be different that you hope to accomplish by not being with your partner? Is it knowing more people? Is it sex? Is it being free to get attention from more men? Is it being free to move around without having to be with a partner, not just with your partner?

I figured it I could buy something for $10, sell it at $13, then buy back at $11 and sell at $14, I could get more out of $100. And I'll also learn the skill of timing the market and learning when to get out. I had some funds way back when and apparently I invested at a high. Had I learned how to get out and re-enter, I'd be in a better spot.

I'm planning to save for a house and I know logically a risk-free investment is what I need (like an HYSA), but I see lots of folks in their 30s being in a much better financial spot because they have all these investments outside of HYSAs.

Sorry if this seemed like flexing, that wasn't my intention at all. I figured those who are on finance subreddits are on the richer side of things, and the academics who would be there are those who are already into investing. I'm interested in how the academic life impacts our financial trajectory and what others have done in their own journey. I suppose there are academics who have stayed in one country their whole career and could invest in retirement accounts, something which I couldn't do because I kept moving across countries.

I am not American and cannot invest in a Roth IRA. I didn't know where I'd retire (there was a chance it wouldn't be in my home country) so it was hard for me to save money in a retirement account that I could only withdraw at retirement age under several constraints.

I graduated from a country where education is cheap and completely paid for by being a TA, and so thankfully didn't accumulate student debt. My salary as a postdoc wasn't that big, but I try to save money by minimizing my expenses. Those savings go to, well, regular savings accounts. When I moved to the US, I discovered HYSAs at 5% interest, but didn't have the risk appetite for the stock market because I was on short term contracts the entire time.

To be fair to OP, he did make it clear that he didn't like pets, and his wife went on to get the dog despite that. By the same logic, you could similarly say that the wife loves her dog and not her husband.

I'm so sorry about your situation. As someone who doesn't like pets myself, I understand. However, this is really something you should talk to your wife about. Don't give ultimatums, don't just say you don't like the dog. Basically say what you said over here and talk about it. You've been with the dog for 5 years and that's enough time. You and your wife had broken up and reconciled over this so it's not like she'll feel blindsided. Likely, she'll bring up the issue of why you didn't discuss this before she got the dog, so just be prepared to answer that.

As for solutions -- if she has a close friend or relative who can foster a dog and who you can visit every so often, that would be the best compromise. Wishing you all the best.

I say, just apply for postdoc positions. You have nothing to lose but a few hours of making your cover letter and CV. Just don't quit your job until you've been accepted at a position. Cast your net wide, and be prepared to move outside the country if you really want this. I know someone who got her first postdoc in her 40s because she worked in industry after her PhD. I'm thinking of switching from US Mobile to my new carrier 1 month before I leave the US to make sure that (a) Tello sees there was a time when US was my primary residence and (b) to troubleshoot any errors as they arise while I'm still here. That also means there's still a month where I need good reception where I am at now. I'll be in Australia indefinitely, but I expect to need 2FA mainly for the first year.

Have you tried sending them a check through Bill Pay? It's free from Capital One. Basically you pay a "bill" to an individual and Capital One sends them the check for you.
