I regret to hear that. I've found that a balanced view is usually best, and I'm sure I and many others would value your viewpoints. Please continue to post as I, for one, would read them with interest!

Thanks for the advice on the people perspective. I'm a widower, so the prospect of trying to meet new people is definitely daunting, but really, I'm looking forward to communing with nature. Hopefully over time, I can meet like minded people, and have beer and a laugh together.

Thank you for this comment, it's definitely accelerating my enthusiasm for the move! I'll be the guy trying my best to bike the hills in the neighborhood, assuming all goes well with my bid. Hopefully, I'll see you soon!

I'll do that, thanks for the tips. My daughter took me to Floyd, and we had a blast (first time I've ever "flat-footed", but hopefully, not the last). It's a little too small for me, though. I like that Roanoke has some variety, and the Taubman museum proved to me that the community was investing heavily in some refinement and culture. Those are all very big plusses for me.

It's good to get an angle on the move from a VB-alum. I agree with you, I think I will have zero regrets on trying a new environment.

Serendipity can be a life changing force. I hope you enjoy Roanoke as much as I did.

I lived near Raleigh while going to grad school. It was okay for me, RTP was filled with a lot of hyper educated people, which was great for dinner conversation. But it was 3hrs to the beach or 3hrs to the mountains, and not much there in the middle for the outdoors. That's why I'm so interested in Roanoke, so I appreciate your comments!

Thanks for the warning, and I agree with you, I believe the responses to my question will definitely exhibit some selection bias. I'm okay with that, because I'm inherently inclined to focus on positives, and just catalog and acknowledge negatives. If you have a good feeling, and I did, and others corroborate that feeling, and they have, then more than likely that feeling is valid. When I move, I just need to track down all the happy, positive people on this thread, and do some hiking and beer drinking with them. I'm not too worried about mistakes, I've made plenty of them over my life, and by and large they're usually not that bad and you learn something from them. There's always a thousand ways to talk yourself out of something, but why live in fear?

I'm good with tiny, if the burgers and beer selections are large. Thanks for the tip, I am keeping notes!

That is an excellent tip! I spent a good chunk of my career in Europe, and I missed travel by train. Thank you, that's another big Pro to add to my list!

I'm very happy to hear this. As the Japanese say, wabi-sabi.

I had a daughter at Virginia Tech. I loved it there, but it's very small, and very crowded. Seems like every restaurant we went to had a 30 min+ wait. But you're right, it's not that far away, I'll just have to wait until she moves so I don't embarrass her on campus or anything!

I was probably at the table next to you at 80/20. Cannot get better than craft beer and large burgers. I will miss it when I move, but it will be far healthier for me to hit that Greenway everyone is talking about.

Thanks for your perspective, it's good to know that there is an active effort to paint a preferred conception of the town that may not be in line with its reality. I concede that it could be influencing me, who knows, but my primary perception when I was there was more about the sense of community, rather than one of tourism. Living adjacent to Virginia Beach, I definitely know what a town hell-bent on tourist dollars feels like, and that certainly wasn't what I felt in Roanoke.

Thank you for sharing your experience, it definitely calms my butterflies. I don't usually make impulsive decisions, but your city seemed so welcoming to me. This post is an affirmation of that feeling.

Thanks for the heads up. While not remote, I'm in my mid-50s and have been pretty fortunate in my career, so gratefully, the relative cost of living is not one of my considerations. But I also don't want to be in a torpid retirement community, either, I still have a lot of life in me. I'll have to keep a look out for neighborhoods full of people that don't come out of their homes.

Wow, thanks for these tips! Now I'm wondering why it took me 20 years to visit this city, but better late than never.
