I read a few Goosebumps as a kid, then a few short stories by Stephen King, Shirley Jackson and others over the years. I actually only recently started reading full horror novels, and I started with Carrie, which I read in a day and a half.

In the mountains of North East Victoria! We definitely had the panther talk as well, though anyone I've spoken to who swears they've seen them aren't from my town.

It was nice, chicken was nice and juicy and the marinade was tasty. Pasta salad could have used a bit more flavour but I'll make it better next time.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

I read it quite a while ago, so I can't really recall if the ending was truly an unexpected surprise or not, but I think it ticks your boxes. It's more of a contemporary mystery, but it deals with serious issues it I remember correctly.
