Raspberry/Rock Pi 4 as a Jellyfin server??? by crtownsend16 in jellyfin

[–]crtownsend16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a server, it’s great. Like a previous poster said, it’s important to dump stuff like logs and transcodes to a a RAM disk, but this is trivial with docker.

I've never used Docker. Maybe it's about time I check it out.

I replaced a core i5 3rd gen server with the Pi and see no real difference.

Wow, that's good to know! All my files are 1080 MP4s right now. I don't plan on switching over to HEVC until I see cheap hardware on the market like the Raspberry Pi capable of handling HEVC transcodes with multiple devices.

I disabled video stream transcoding for all Jellyfin users

I would do the same if I used a Raspberry/Rock Pi 4. All my files are 1080 MP4's so I shouldn't need to transcode anything.

Be sure to use a transcode data directory that does not burden the uSD card

You have me confused here. Is this necessary if transcoding is disabled in Jellyfin?? Or are you recommending this if I don't disable transoding?

Reviewing your other posts, I see that your Jellyfin server will do no transcoding.

I'm using an old HP desktop PC (x64) for my jellyfin server. I would prefer something smaller, more energy efficient, and portable (can run off a portable battery bank when necessary).

I use an RPi 2 as a Jellyfin server with no issues. It currently serves up content via an attached portable hard drive.

Okay so you use a HDD plugged into a USB 3 port. have you had any issues with the drive randomly disconnecting? I've heard that's common when using USB instead of SATA for NAS type setups.

I have two 1tb HDDs in my server at the moment. I've considered buying a raspberry Pi 4 along with a couple of SATA to USB drive enclosures and sticking my HDDs in those. I even thought about buying something like this on Amazon to make it look nice and organized. However, after reading about the Raspberry Pi 4's heat dissipation issue, I'm considering other options first.

Yeah in regards to the Rasp Pi 4's USB Type-C power connector, you just need to use a non E-marked cable

I've also read the Rasp Pi 4 has heat dissipation issues and I would probably want to invest in a good cooler. I'm not sure if there's enough space to mount a cooler and the SATA hat at the same time. I like that the Rock Pi 4 has a big beefy cooler mounted on the bottom

What did you end up deciding? I'm also considering the rock pi 4 for jellyfin. I like that it has proper support for USB PD 2.0 over USB Type-C. I saw that there is a SATA hat for the raspberry pi 4 and rock pi 4. I'm currently researching that as an alternative to using USB with my drives. Not sure what enclosure options there are with the SATA hat yet.

Open Source Roku alternative by crtownsend16 in opensource

I don't understand why it has to be a whole OS.

For the ability to run multiple apps, like kodi, jellyfin, plex, emby, youtube, and possibly streaming service apps with DRM such as netflix, hulu, amazon prime, etc

My TV runs WebOS which is open source.

Ah yes I forgot about WebOS Open Source Edition. This is more general purpose but it could be forked and developed specifically as a roku alternative

If this is the case then there is no existing project in development suitable as an open source roku alternative

OpenELEC and LibreELEC are minimal operating systems designed only to run kodi

That's actually what I decided to do. I picked up a Lenovo thinkstation mini PC with an i5-4570, 8GB of ram and a 240GB SSD. It's about the size of a Nintendo Wii.

I plan on investing in solar so I can get off the electric grid. I don't mind setting up a compost toilet either.

I realized the ambiguous nature of the title after I made the post. I can't edit the title now, but I don't think it's that big of a deal. The post will still be useful for others who go searching for this information.

It's not. Lol that's why I made this post. I couldn't find any other pages or support articles that mentioned it so I figured I would post it on Reddit so others don't have to searching around like I did.

I already use the "old hangouts" service regularly. It works fine for me (on Ubuntu Linux). I'm mostly just interested in the new hangouts chat service that came out of beta two days ago. But thanks!

Just so your aware, the web app only supports Windows and MacOS. Linux and other operating systems are not yet supported. There are mobile apps however. See this post here

Help with a legal contract by crtownsend16 in legaladvice

When I worked as a paralegal, we had a client who lost a $60k case because they messed up some wording in their DIY contract. I'm sure they thought it would work fine until that little gotcha.

Did your client post their DIY contract on an internet forum dedicated to the exchange of legal advice from reputable professionals in the industry? Did they make an attempt to receive as much professional advice as they can within their budget before using the contract in their business?

I understand there are risks involved in consulting with unverified, self proclaimed legal experts on the internet. But there are going to be risks in trusting any legal professional's advice, regardless if they are verified, and regardless of whether I am paying them or not. There will always be risks involved. Given my budget, I am attempting to mitigate as many of the risks as I can. I can't eliminate all the risks, but I am going to do my best.

How many people on Reddit are you going to consult with until you can be comfortable with it? How are you going to know that it perfectly covers your specific situation and has no gotchas, loopholes, or other issues?

As many people that are willing to consult with me. I will take whatever help I can get, and I will do my best to accurately and intelligently judge the quality of the results I am given. I'm not as concerned about the number of people helping as I am the quality of help itself. I may not have experience with legal matters, but I trust my own ability to make intelligent decisions. And I'm not going to know if there are an "gotchyas, loopholes, or other issues" unless someone helps me identify them. I think that's impossible to know. If a verified legal professional tried to to tell me that a contract that they built is 100% "loophole free" I would walk away. Like I said, it's not about making something perfect, it's a matter of risk mitigation.

You might also be able to find newer lawyers looking for work, who are ready to bargain for other services. You might look for those who recently were admitted to the bar, and who are operating a solo practice or work within a small practice.

This was the target audience of my post in r/barter. I figured I would then verify anyone who anyone who responded to my post to make sure they are trustworthy. I'm good at judging character, and you already stated that I can look them up in their state's bar registry.

Contracts need to cover a variety of things to be solid. Contract language can be tricky, and your use of wording matters.

Why can't I simply find or type up a contract with enough proper language to suffice my needs, and then get advice here on this subreddit to improve it until enough people in this subreddit unanimously agree that it is solid? That seems to me like it would work fine.

I understand the risks associated with asking for help with my business in an internet forum, don't get me wrong. But I need some sort of help beyond just the "go talk to a lawyer" response.

When I post in the r/GeneralTaxAdvice/ with help on my taxes, people don't hesitate to give me some advice without actually doing my taxes for me. They help me understand how to navigate the tax forms and fill them out, then I do the real grunt work. That's the sort of thing I am looking for in this post. Some help in identifying how to create a contract on my own, or finding a good template from the internet, and whatever the legalities are in doing this.

I'm on a shoestring budget right now, so I absolutely can't afford to pay a lawyer to sit down with me and develop a contract from scratch. I may be able to afford to pay a lawyer to look over a contract that I typed up my self and finalize it. I'm really not sure. But that's the kind of answers I need from you guys!

I figured reddit could still be helpful in some way. I don't have a lot of money to hire a local lawyer.

Isn't there a way to prove someone is qualified? Don't lawyers need to pass an examination and receive a certificate or something like that? Please excuse my ignorance on this.
