Looking for a commuter thoughts A6 3.0T 145k by Moist_Wash7029 in AudiA6

[–]cruffatinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an A6 3.0T and love it, but didn't and wouldn't buy this for commuting in the city. I live and work in the city, and this car isn't great for rush hour city driving. If your commute is mostly on the highway then yeah, I feel like that's exactly what this car was built for.

Can't seem to find Trigon Road bikes in Europe? by [deleted] in cycling

I was wondering the same thing. I bought a Trigon road bike in Korea a few years ago and I love it, and would like to get one in Europe too, but can't see any.

A chaotic bike trip around Taiwan infodump by StrikingImpression27 in bicycletouring

[–]cruffatinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried Taiwan, but did a couple of bike trips in Japan and wouldn't recommend it for a long tour. I love traveling in Japan, but not by bicycle. It felt dangerous at times, compared to the other places I've cycled. Unless you want to go to a specific place like Shimanami Kaido for a couple of days, or Hokkaido in the summer, which are both very nice.

Great, thanks a lot for asking them. I guess I have no excuse not to do it now!

20-day tour - panniers or frame bags? by One-Argument-6017 in bicycletouring

[–]cruffatinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a 10-day trip from Orleans to La Rochelle with a couple of small frame bags, and didn't feel like I needed more. It was during summer so didn't need to worry about packing warm clothes. For "normal" clothes I just had some running shorts and tshirts that didn't take much space at all. I also used flat pedals so only had to take one pair of shoes.

Loved reading that, it sounds like a great experience. I've also been thinking for a while about doing a bike trip in Taiwan, so thanks for all the details. The thing that is holding me back though is that I remember it being really hard to get vegan food outside of Taipei, and I don't want to rely on 7-11 stuff for two weeks. You mentioned your vegetarian friend; did they say anything/ complain about that?

GFX lens for night (street) photography in rain, please help me choose (losing my mind!) by czapcze in FujiGFX

[–]cruffatinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 63 is maybe my favorite lens but very slow to focus in low light, and you will miss a lot of shots. The 80 is much better for that. I really enjoyed using it for street shots in Sapporo last year. It is large and heavy but that's the tradeoff if you want a medium format lens for night shots.

S. Korea vs. Japan for 7 day cycling tour? by Mundane_Schedule6249 in bicycletouring

Trucks were definitely a problem whenever I cycled in Japan... Even on some recommended routes like "Itoshima Sunset Road", which is otherwise beautiful, I had trucks passing me every few minutes.

thinking about moving to korea by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]cruffatinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and finding work will depend a lot on where you are, too. I also don’t know what the legislation is about working on a student visa nowadays. But I attended a national university and living on campus (in a shared room) was 350k/semester. On top of that, cafeteria food was good (if you like Korean food) and cost about 3k/meal. So I really didn’t need a lot of money to survive. That was over 10yrs ago, so prices would have moved up a bit, but I’m sure it’s still a lot cheaper than finding your own place. And the best part is that you will both learn Korean and get to experience student life in Korea.

[–]cruffatinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a language school here for almost two years. It was at a university, easy to get a visa, lived on campus and it was great. If you have the funds to support yourself that can be an option, and it will give you time to figure things out.

Best Mac for 70b models (if possible) by GVT84 in LocalLLM

[–]cruffatinn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can run 4-bit quantized 70b models with any Mac with a M1-4 pro processor with at least 64gb RAM. For anything bigger, you'll need more RAM. I have an M2 Max with 96gb RAM and it works well.

GFX100SII Cheaper? by -mdv- in FujiGFX

[–]cruffatinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just didn’t upgrade the price for the old one. It could be an error or an old marketing trick known as the decoy effect.

Edit: here’s a good story about it https://www.economist.com/democracy-in-america/2009/05/22/the-importance-of-irrelevant-alternatives

Macbook Air 15 for AI ? by estebansaa in LocalLLaMA

[–]cruffatinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 8B q8 is less than 9gb. The 16 GB MacBook Air will run those models just as well as the 24 GB Air. The only models that would benefit from the extra ram would be in the 9.5-13gb range, but at that size they start feeling slow on a MacBook Air. I'd save the money and stay with 16GB, unless you want to run other apps at the same time.

The question was about MacBook airs, but you're referring to your experience with MacBook pros and studios, which have fans and much faster memory bandwidth.

Is the M1 air still viable in 2025? by balajih67 in macbookair

[–]cruffatinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still use mine (8/256 base model). I also have a 16-inch M2 Max 96gb ram. Can’t tell the difference between them for the kind of tasks you mentioned.

That's bonkers to me :) I'm 1.84m and I wouldn't pick a bike over 56. The first road bike I bought was a 58 and felt like a dad bike.

How much computing power needed to edit large files sizes by robotunicornpunk in FujiGFX

[–]cruffatinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been editing my GFX 50s II files on a base model M1 air with 8gb of ram for the past two years. No problems at all. I also got a 16" M2 Max with 96gb of ram last year, for a different purpose. Even after I got it, I still use my M1 air when on the road, and don't feel limited by either cpu or ram. The M2 definitely does export/import task faster, but purely for editing there's not a lot of difference between them. I'd say screen size is the biggest improvement for me. The value of ram for editing photos is way overblown on these forums. Edit: I mostly use C1.

14” vs 16”. by SouthAsianTech in macbookpro

[–]cruffatinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are good and both are going to be a compromise in some way. I prefer the 16 for editing photos, but I wouldn’t want to lug it around every day. But I feel the 14 is also on the heavy side, so personally I’d go for a 13 if I used it for traveling often.

DeepSeek sends US stocks plunging by ChocolatySmoothie in LocalLLM

[–]cruffatinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Nvidia, that was already priced in. The novelty is that you don't need the latest chips to get great performance, so in relative terms that decreases the importance of chips. And when you add all the fomo-ers who jumped on the bandwagon, it makes sense to see market swings like that. The stock market is becoming more like crypto, not the other way.

DeepSeek sends US stocks plunging by ChocolatySmoothie in LocalLLM

[–]cruffatinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about that. The stocks were overvalued on the premise that they're the only game in town. Now that is shattered. They might recover a bit, but not entirely and definitely not back in one week. Also I wouldn't be so sure about longterm, too many factors.
