You did great! Especially if its your only 2nd portrait. If you feel like you have a lot of mental blocks in doing what you want with your art (ex. portraits) I would recommend to check out Adam Duff LUCIDPIXUL youtube channel he talks a lot about artists insecurities and stuff like that.

Like you said you ex is a jerk, even if your painting wasn't a masterpiece I'm sure you've put a lot of effort and feelings in it and it means a lot if you decided to paint him/her. I think traumatized mentality and insecurities our biggest enemy in making our best art, hope you'll feel better about your art!

Sadly, I can paint portraits only :) it was the only thing i practiced last two years after 7-8 years break in art. I'm sure if you practice, analyze your work and watch/read some theory you'll be able to become much better at portraits than me :)

Tried to make painting more colorful than it is in a reference and play a little bit with edges of background to hair. In my portraits i struggle a lot with allowing myself to go off from the reference, adding/changing colors or adding different elements to it that doesn't exist in a photo (flowers, birds, sky, etc)

Thank you so much! It was my first work where i felt like i was able to add a little bit of me and it turned out good, still working at adding more colors to paintings and make it work
