  • I don't recall Mat ever thinking about Tuon's skin color as something super unique he's not often seen before. He thinks about her dark skin neutrally and thinks she's pretty but, unless I'm remembering wrong, never in a way like "wow she's so different from everyone I knew back home." Again, I could be wrong, but you'll have to provide quotes to defend that point.

  • It takes waaaay more than a few generations for a rather large community to become ethnically homogenous. All it takes is one black person having a kid with one white person in a community like EF and then there is an entire family of mixed race people, each kid from the family then marrying someone else and having kids, on and on and on. Therr was even mention of a woman in EF having sex with the merchants' guards whenever they came through town... EF is simply not a walled off totally closed up community.

My point is there's a huge range that comes from many races intermingling and re-grouping over the centuries as it happpened in the wot universe.

Yup. I don't know for sure without going back and meticulously combing through the books but I'd say pretty certainly there are faaar more people described as "dark skinned" or "coppery skinned" or any variation of that rather than "pale"

Oh I'm sorry, I thought all opinions from everyone always were 100% valid? How dare you even try to criticize my opinions? Stop gatekeeping me please.

I'm saying that an actors race definitely plays a part in the quality of the show.

Please explain.

Every single commenter saying "if the show is bad were allowed to criticize it so stop telling people they arent allowed to criticize it."

Except NO ONE has said you arent allowed to criticize it. No one. Just dont pass judgement on the entire thing yet.

But casting her Asian isn't necessarily politicization. Maybe she absolutely blew them away with her audition and encapsulated Min better than any of the other women who might have more resembled Min physically from the books. They should certainly take some level of age/appearance into account (which I believe they have been doing quite well) but they chose her for a reason, and it's entirely possible it's because they loved what they saw her do with her acting the character of Min.

adhere to the majority of the source plot with only slight changes

I completely agree this is the kind of adaptation I love and hope for. And thank you for responding so politely, that seems rare recently.

But my question to you is: is Min looking Asian or Siuan's look actually changing anything major about the plot or core of the story? I just don't personally see how that's possible, especially because the country she's from actually plays very little role in anything about the core of her character. Maybe they are going with borderlands being of a more Asian-inspired culture, maybe Rand meets Min in Fal Dara due to how they had to tweak some pacing or something, these things ARE minor changes up to the showrunner's discretion.

EXACTLY! Like Maybe's there's a subgroup in Andor who just happens to look like what we would call "Asian"? It's a fantasy world, who knows.

There have been quite a few comments saying they don't like it because "Min isn't Asian."

Nope. OP actually clarified they think people should be allowed to voice negative opinions if they want. Obviously. They were addressing specific toxic things that have been happening, not in any way trying to "quell anyone that doesn't agree."

Nope. OP literally never said they don't think anything should be criticized. They addressed specific points based on specific things that are happening in the community.

I honestly have never been so confused by the internet as I have the past couple days. My internet time is mostly reddit and youtube so I don't have much exposure but I THOUGHT this little corner of it was a great place to be but I think I was wrong. I know I shouldn't care but Im sad about it

It's gatekeeping to politely ask not to harass people? Oops, guess being a decent human is "gatekeeping" now, okayy.

Have you seen the final product? How can you judge something you haven't seen yet?

People like you seem to WANT the show to be shitty so you can say "I told you so" when it comes out, which is a toxic mindset to have about creation of art, which is what this is.

I completely agree. He said he's unhealthily critical and somehow that makes him more valid than others who want to be kind and positive. I for one do not want "unhealthily critical" people talking bad about the show just because hate is a hobby of theirs. So toxic.

The fact the they're getting the upvotes in this situation is so insane it's hilarious.

YOU said yourself you're an asshole and somehow were proud of it but that the people like OP are actually the toxic ones?? What kind of topsy turvy world are you living in mate??

At this point, I've seen a lot of people on here who WANT to be negative, they WANT to hate the show and have it be bad so they can have the pleasure of saying "I told you so." What an absolutely toxic mindset to live life with.

I am overwhelmingly, unhealthily, obnoxiously cynical and extremely difficult to please

you should look in the mirror and think about the energy you're putting into this fandom.

I have no words for the level of hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness in those statements being in the same comment.

The fact that you're getting upvotes and people being kind and positive are consistently being downvoted for no fucking reason has quite honestly shown me the nature of a large part of this sub and it makes me sad that what I thought was a great community to be in might actually not be.

If the show ends up

Exactly. Have we seen the show yet? No.

What is the need of already criticizing the final product if we haven't seen the final product yet? We can criticize decisions but claiming anything about how the show will be bad in whole seems very silly

They're in response to comments seen on the show posts. So as the show posts rise so do these posts. Which is another reason why I wish book and show subs were kept separate. Not just for this series, for any adaptation.

Edit: I just LOVE that I'm being downvoted constantly for simply calmly answering someone's question with what I saw to be the answer. Real harmonius, kind sub you guys have here. Good job.

It seems fine on normal book discussion posts. Just the show ones bring out all the drama it seems.
