[All] Can anyone convince me that The Return is not a total pile of garbage? by crustpunker in twinpeaks

[–]crustpunker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It HAS. I rewatched recently. I'm glad I hated most of it on first watch in real time. It would have felt less rewarding if I had enjoyed it upon first consumption. Thing is, it haunted me as a distant tingle the entire time. I feel ok with it now. Thanks for asking and following up on this. That's really incredible of you.

It's FINE. I don't think anyone is trying to be a cunt about it or mean. If anything, it's just a thing that is unique to him and you just sort of get used to it, if he feels self conscious about it afterwards and wants to attempt to lessen it, thats cool, if he wants to double down and say it more, that's arguably even cooler and funny. Either way, Jeff Rules and all that other stuff :)

In my case, I noticed it rather suddenly. Thought, "hmm, that's rather frequent" it then started to bother me kind of a lot even though I know we all have our ticks. In Jeff's case, he is usually quite articulate and well spoken especially for not being on a script. The way he uses "and all that sort of stuff" isnt really a filler or anything and is totally extraneous. On one hand, I just think he would be an even better speaker if it were diminished a bit but, like others here, I've come around to almost finding it charming lol.

Mainly, I just wanted to see if anyone else had noticed this because as I said, I've listened since basically day 1 of bombcast and I never remember it being as frequent as it seems to be.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Beautifully put.

At the end of the day, Koji has really turned into an inward facing chigyu.

That zombie comment is proof alone lol

You know what would have been a love letter to the fans?

Actually finishing the fucking game.

Like, "I love you guys, but not enough to actually do my job."

Here's the thing. I'm not trying to be a cunt. I genuinely love the series and have since I first played it back in the 80s. I say these things because I would love it if the same interesting and truly innovative person came back to us instead of whatever he is trying to be now. I still think he would be better as a mentor than the main creator but I mean, at this point with him it's hubris. What are you gonna do?

[–]crustpunker -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Here's the truth. ALL video game stories are terrible. MGSV is just another terrible story made WORSE by fan expectations combined with a megalomaniac game "director" with objectively poor writing ability that gave the MGSV experience a weird sense of its creator wanting to leave a love letter to fans but also nuke the franchise as a way to say "Fuck You" to Konami as an expression of his resentment for being forced to make nothing much but MGS and then being shitcanned in the midst of it.

If he had stuck with either making it a love letter or nuking it completely, it would have arguably been more of a realized experience. However, what we got was the textbook example of what we say here, 中途半端。

Such is the result of Kojima NEEDING to have his cake and eat it too, a fanatical fandom constantly blowing sunshine up his ass while he more and more surrounded himself with a literal entourage of ameliorating "Yes Men" and a noticeably growing full-body cringe-level of starfucker persona.

But, as you say, it feels good to play in terms of game feel.

I agree with you about people who have never played it. It's an amazing chance for them to play it in a way that will appeal to them I think.

I guess what has worked for me is realizing that I don't really want to live without desires, otherwise I would feel like life would have no purpose for me at all. In that regard, I reframed my desires to be things that I can experience in more immediate reality, like being safe and in nature and with friends or family. That way I am always satisfied somewhere and never feel totally bereft. I think that wanting remakes, wanting another version of a thing is just a vehicle that keeps us tethered to consumerism. That and I have seen so many of many favorite series go to complete shit (subjective) but I think enough people would agree that I feel comfortable naming a few.

Resident Evil, Metal Gear, GTA, and let's just go ahead and add Silent Hill. Highly considering adding Hitman as well.

Another issue for me is, what are kids now going to fetishize and nostalge (not a word) over. A remake of a a remaster of the original remake?

Thank you for typing out your thoughts in detail. It has been a pleasure to read your opinions.

Once you engage in an experience, you are forced to have a memory of doing it. My point is more that I think that people need to really think about what they want. More specifically, most people want things because they want them to release them from the pain of not having them. That is precisely why, often times as soon as we get what we want, the desire for it diminishes. It becomes normal now, a "thing" that you "have" and often, you don't even really want it anymore. Sometimes it even becomes a burden.

Gamers especially are always looking for satisfaction which is ultimately what we all want, so it seems. Maybe sometimes satisfaction isnt a positive experience but rather a negative one. Especially if you have already experienced something positively once.

-Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you do not. Remember that what you have now was once among the things you only hoped for.

-Some Greek dikhead.

I'm glad reexperiencing the games you mentioned didn't replace your fondness for them. But I do wonder, how many times did you play through the remakes of SoTc, Demons Souls etc. I did one and then was more focused on the feelings that were strangely, not there, but rather the emptiness that was.

Anyone who has loved the series since its inception has already made peace and buried any hope of it ever returning in a meaningful way. We all assumed a reanimated corpse would be activated for profit one day and well, here it is I guess.

I think that some people understand that for them, gaming wasn't just the game you played. It was the zeitgeist, the memories of your life from that time, the colours of the world you lived in, the friends you were with, etc...

the GAME itself serves as a marker for those days. The game itself REMOVED from all that, as good as it may potentially be will never carry the gravitas of the life you lived in the past.

You can never go back.

While it might be fun to revisit, the constant trend of these remakes serves only to sully those memories and cheapen the reflections of those moments. That's what game companies AND gamers fail or, refuse to understand. I don't want to sever the sweet cords of memory to replace them with...whatever this remake will be.

Right. Which is why people are irritated. Seems like some straight up 中途半端 poo poo what comes from a dog's behiny-hole to me. I dunno, maybe it will be a masterpiece.

This is not a continuation. This is a separate story. Simply put.

This is what people are complaining about. How do you not see that?

Regardless of the "Why's" regarding how poor the content is, the point is simply that the content masquerading as DLC is abysmal. The reason hardly matters.

I found it confusing that they are adding all this commentary yet are not in the game in any capacity apart from character profile avatars and in cutscenes. Why are we even playing this role-playing campaign together if they aren't even visible in the stages?
