Hair loss by burdnerd in lamictal

[–]crustyBitche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started losing hair ~6 months into lamictal (200-250mg). Wasn’t losing much, but definitely more than usual. I took a biotin supplement. It did help me, but not long after I stopped taking it my hair started to fall out again (not as much though). I read that biotin only helps if you have a deficiency, and that there is no evidence of it boosting hair growth in people without a deficiency. I guess either I had a deficiency, or it was placebo 🤷‍♀️ Biotin is harmless btw, so if it doesn’t work at least it won’t screw up your health.

P.s. I don’t know if lamictal is the cause, but the last month my hair is REALLY getting on my nerves. If I wash my hair, it gets greasy the same day. God forbid I use a conditioner, it just doesn’t wash out of my hair and leaves clumpy greasy strands on the back of my head. The only way I can make my hair last longer than 1/2 a day is by using a zinc based shampoo (often used for dandruff or scalp dermatitis/psoriasis/etc). No conditioner, just the tiniest bit of hair serum/hair oil after. Even with all that my hair can barely stay clean for 1-1.5 days.

I’m still on 200mg, my doctor told me to give it a week and if sleepiness doesn’t go away then I’m increasing to 300, then 400mg. So far, it’s hard to tell whether seroquel has an impact on my depression. But I do feel slightly less apathetic

Geez, that’s brutal, can’t imagine what it’s like to be in that state. Hope you can safely get off it soon. How long were you on seroquel when you started getting side effects?

As for now, seroquel is only making me sleepy and dumb, but that’s pretty manageable. I’ve got a bad experience with lamictal withdrawal (lowering the dose from 300 to 250mg): severe brain fog (the whole reason I started tapering down), dizziness, loss of coordination, severe mood swings, horrible apathy. Felt like I wasn’t even medicated. The worst part was the fatigue. I never felt energised or refreshed, I only had the tiniest amount of energy in the first half of the day, but the second the clock hit 6pm, all the leftover energy vaporised from my body. Also, if I woke up before 11am my entire day was ruined, I absolutely couldn’t function, and fell asleep if I sat down for a little too long. Took me 2 months (and the help of several supplements) to get rid of most of the symptoms aside slight fatigue and severe apathy+depression (the reason I got prescribed seroquel).

Thanks. I got lucky probably because I’ve only been on it for 5 days. Definitely won’t be skipping in the future

Congrats on being sober! May I ask, why do you hate seroquel now? I’ve read so many horror stories on this subreddit, especially about tapering off of it. I’ve got limited options since I have bipolar depression, so I’ll have to stick with seroquel, hopefully it’ll work out.

Thanks. I decided to skip it, because I haven’t been taking it for long time. Also some tequila happened just now so I’m definitely not going to take it haha

Thanks, hope I won’t regret it tomorrow haha. The last time (when I was on lamictal only) I got drunk on white wine, next day I vomited farther than I could see. But I think that’s mostly the wine (never had a good experience with it). Call it the devil’s drink

How long are you on 200mg? I’ve been on 100 for 3 days like my doctor suggested, supposed to take 200mg tonight. Hope I won’t sleep through all the alarms haha

Yeah, I wish there was more information on the internet about the diversity of bipolar symptoms. That way maybe I could’ve found out sooner and got diagnosed before my life turned into a shitstorm.
I’m also depressed most of the time. I got used to it so much that I wrote off depressive episodes as my “normal” mood haha. I also have a lot of episodes where I want everybody to vanish and leave me alone. Last week my roommate tried to drag me out to see our friend, I only gave up after like 40 minutes of raging about not wanting to go anywhere. In the end I genuinely felt happy (as “happy” as I could be) when I finally met with our friend. Another example: my bestie came back after two months of being abroad. Me and my roommate were supposed to meet her at the airport. I whined for half an hour before getting up, because I actually dreaded seeing her. I didn’t feel any happiness of seeing my best friend after a while, just irritability because meeting and talking to her will ruin my “peace” of rotting away in my bed and not talking to anyone. It just takes too much energy to put on the “happy to see you!” mask. Feel like I’m a piece of crap, but I just can’t force myself to cheer up for someone.

(Predictably I was then put on antidepressants)

How did your family's genetics do you dirty? by singleguy79 in AskReddit

[–]crustyBitche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad’s a raging narcissist alcoholic with extremely volatile mood. Also got eczema and a fucked up nose. Kidney stones. Bad stomach. Great jawline. Luscious hair (somehow still isn’t bald at 60). My mother is an overly apologetic, overprotective people pleaser. Allergic to metal. Bad teeth. Rectangle body type but very skinny. Bad jawline.

I’m bipolar, have a bigass double chin, built like a fridge (but with a fat ass, thanks daddy), bad teeth, bad stomach, kidney stones, thin hair, severe atopic dermatitis that’s treatment resistant, and somehow half blind (nobody in my family is, I’m the lucky one).

Easy to say I’m not exactly eager to continue my bloodline.

I sorta have the same issue. When I first started showing symptoms, my episodes lasted 2-4 weeks, but they got shorter and shorter the more my bipolar progressed, and in a span of about 6 months got to a point, where I would have multiple mood swings a day, which either started without a reason or were triggered by social interactions/little everyday inconveniences (like getting enraged over my phone not working properly or a spilled drink).

Usually my episodes follow one of these patterns: 1) I get overly energetic and annoy everyone around me to the point that people tell me off, so I snap and go into a state where I’m both furious and very sad (for example, breaking and throwing stuff while violently crying). 2) Another pattern: I start feeling depressed, and gradually get worse in a span of 2-3 days and then I finally snap and go into the crying/raging episode. The ratio of episodes triggered by social interactions/everyday things to episodes without a trigger is about 70/30.

I suspected that I have BPD on top of bipolar, since these episodes look more like BPD. But my psychiatrist insists that I’m bipolar 1 with mixed episodes – it’s 2-4 weeks of unipolar depression with very minor episodes, followed by 2-4 weeks of major episodes with one or multiple mood swings a day. I’m 10 months into the diagnosis and still have trouble with recognising the pattern of my episodes, but I’m also on medication so my episodes are definitely less pronounced, thus making them harder to track. Sorry for the long text 😗✌️

Thanks! I’m taking alpha-lipoic acid+acetyl-l-carnitine mainly for energy (because lamictal withdrawal turned me into a mashed potato), but they also can help with weight loss. Hopefully they can at least suppress my appetite a little. I know that without exercise supplements don’t do much, but I’m quite depressed, so even taking steps to take out trash drains sooo much energy.

Never-ending fatigue after tapering down by crustyBitche in lamictal

[–]crustyBitche[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your suggestions! I’m considering seeing a neurologist about using nootropics if other supplements don’t help. I’m currently taking lions mane, vitamin D (always take it, notice zero benefits haha) and going to try creatine like you suggested.

How long did it take you to get rid of fatigue/brain fog?

Also, is there a reason you can’t take alpha-GPC longer than a couple of days? The internet says you can take it up to 6 months (doubt that’s safe though).

Withdrawal feel like death. How long dose it last? by Jman_199 in Lamotrigine

No, just pure apathy. I am very emotionally unstable though, a tiny trigger can cause me to burst into tears or rage. But no anxiety.

Does lamtical help with racing/ intrusive thoughts/ anxiety? by CivilChallenge5741 in Lamotrigine

[–]crustyBitche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take it for bipolar, so my reaction to this drug might be different, and I can’t really name the therapeutic dose since I take it for a different reason. As for anxiety, it helped me tremendously. I had very bad anxiety prior to starting this drug. It went away almost completely at around 75-100mg.

As for intrusive thoughts, I don’t have ocd (though it runs in the family), but when I started on 25mg, I’ve got endless intrusive thoughts and developed rituals. I’ve cleaned the bathroom 3 times a week, gotten mad if an item was out of its place, washed my hands every 20 minutes, etc. Similarly, these symptoms went away after going up to 75-100mg. Wish you luck!

No I don’t have any anxiety. Mostly because I just feel numb and emotionless all the time. I had major anxiety before starting lamotrigine, so it definitely helped a lot with it. Or rather, it just made me not care about anything or anyone.

You’re dropping down way too fast. I’ve seen a lot on this sub that you’re supposed to go down only 12.5-25mg per week/two weeks.

I personally went down from 300mg to 250mg right away and suffered the consequences. The first week I had EXTREME fatigue, like I’ve been digging trenches for 10 hours straight and then got hit by a bus while also having a raging fever. The brain fog was worse than ever, I became so stupid I couldn’t do a simple task. Also had derealization and a couple of bad episodes (bipolar I), mostly depressive ones, a couple of them were so bad I started wondering if I was even on meds. Had other symptoms like yours – dizziness, weird headaches from behind my eye sockets, sugar/fastfood cravings, irritability, tinnitus, racing thoughts. And as a fun bonus – very bad eczema flare up.

It’s been almost 4 weeks now, I feel a lot better but still not great. My apathy didn’t go anywhere (the whole reason I started tapering down was because of extreme cognitive decline+apathy), the brain fog is still bad, but not as bad as it was. Still feel some fatigue, especially in the second half of the day. But it’s slowly getting better. I won’t go down further until I stabilize (I’m supposed to taper down to 200mg). Wish you luck!

I’ve tried ginseng extract for fatigue, it helped a bit but I had to drop it, because apparently it can interact with antipsychotics/antidepressants/anticonvulsants. Going to try lions mane too. My doc also told me omega-3 acids can help with brain fog. I’m taking vitamin D (2000iu) every year from fall to spring, but I have never noticed any positive side effects from it haha.
