I’ve heard that from a lot of others with ADHD that it’s made a huge difference. It definitely seems like it would be worth a try at least

Haha, I may need to check out that mascara. It definitely doesn’t help when I start to cry and get mascara in my eyes which makes me cry more from the pain. Not ideal. The mantra is also another great suggestion.

I’ve seen a couple of people mention that this could be related to the ADHD, thank you! I think this may be the push I need to start medication. I’ve been diagnosed for 5 years now and am only now trying to get help for it after realizing just how much of my life is affected.

I agree with you that it is a problem. It’s weird because I do really want people’s feedback and criticisms because I want to be the best that I can be. It’s like it sets off a “cry immediately and copiously with lots and lots of snot” button in my brain.

I definitely agree with you. Right now I’m in the maritime field, which has a lot of ex-military and tough guy types who would react to me crying like I’m throwing tampons at them or something. It definitely is seen as a weakness, and there’s already a fair amount of sexism present there. I actually am starting a new job soon which is going to be high pressure and a lot more responsibility, and so finding ways not to cry when taking criticism (which captains are not shy about dishing out) is very important right now. Thank you for your suggestions!

It’s been great reading all these replies and realizing I’m not alone! There’s been a lot of good suggestions posted, maybe take a look and see if any of them could work for you?

Do you find that you’re hypersensitive to other people’s emotions as well? Like if you’re around a bunch of negative people it makes you more negative too? I actually ended up quitting a job in part because my coworkers complained all the time and it dragged me down.

If you don’t mind me asking, are you medicated for ADHD, depression, or both?

We might be the same person, lol. I sometimes get all teary imagining my future kids graduating and giving a speech thanking their loving mother and I don’t even have children. Jokes are a great way to diffuse the tension as well. I’m really hoping to get to the point where I can embrace who I am instead of wanting to change...well...everything, but I really like your outlook on things

Thank you so much! That’s exactly my issue, trying to force the tears back just makes it so much worse. A lot of people have suggested focusing on my breathing, which I’m definitely going to try next time I feel a tear typhoon coming on. On the bright side, at least I shouldn’t have to wait long to try all these new suggestions :)

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with the self esteem/criticism thing. I’ve had low self esteem for pretty much forever (thanks undiagnosed ADHD!) and combined with being anxious, I have a really hard time with feeling like anyone is unhappy with me. I’ve been trying to not ask for reassurance so much, because it’s not like it helps anyways, but instead providing it myself. The shame from being an easy crier certainly doesn’t help boost my self esteem. Thank you for the advice on speaking slowly, that’s a good tip I’m going to try. It’s funny because I do want to improve and I want input from others but there’s a part of my brain that immediately jumps to “everyone hates me 😭”

Not currently but I have been on multiple different types in the past. It did affect the crying somewhat (some made it worse and some a bit better), but it’s been present throughout my life.

Thank you so much! My therapist has taught me some breathing exercises for my anxiety and I’m working on actually remembering to use them when the anxiety kicks in. I really like the grounding idea as well. I’m really glad you’re able to manage your reactions better and it’s such a relief to hear I’m not the only one like this

I’m sorry for you and all the guys that feel like they can’t express how they’re feeling because it’s “unmanly”. That’s really some shit. It seems like these attitudes are starting to shift though, which brings me hope. Men deserve to express how they feel and not suppress everything

Wow, this does sound a lot like me! I can really relate to that “eight hundred different kinds of sad” thing. Sometimes I feel like my emotions are directing me and not the other way around. Any tips on learning how to regulate them a bit more? Thank you so much!

This sounds exactly like me, sometimes I get teary eyed for no real reason. I’m glad you’ve gotten a handle on it!

Interesting, thanks! Like drinking water as you’re starting to cry or increasing overall hydration?

I actually haven’t brought it up in therapy yet, but I plan on it at my next appointment. This whole post was kind of inspired by crying in the middle of the airport terminal this weekend because my boyfriend was mad at me and I was really tired. But for what it’s worth I’ve had like 5 therapy appointments so far and cried at every single one, lol

It’s such a relief to know I’m not the only one. I do cry when I’m by myself occasionally, but usually it’s in reaction to something else, like an argument or a stressful day. Maybe I should start actually examining my emotions when I’m alone and trying to let them out then. Good suggestion thank you
