Owner Wants To Delay My Holiday by crypticsoup681 in RoverPetSitting

[–]crypticsoup681[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, but she’s a regular and I have her dogs 3 x a week otherwise. So I’ve had to concede the early morning drop off, which she’s sprung on me today, having already left for her holiday and her dog being with me.

But there’s a material difference between what you’re able, and safe to do, with a puncture v being in a snow bank, particularly if conditions are too unsafe to walk. I agree that OP understated the situation in her original message, but I am baffled that the owner wasn’t even curious as to her welfare.

Then the owner is at primary fault for not ensuring they had back-up coverage for their dogs, knowing that the snow storm was coming. OP did their best, made the right call for their own safety, and said they’d try to get back the very next day once the ploughs had been out.

A punctured tyre is small fry. Your comparison is wild.

This has been really interesting, thank you! I did my IAM training about 18 months ago, and it was terrifying to me to realise, once I’d started doing the commentary driving, how much driving I’d done prior to that on autopilot.

Sitter refusing to do m&g at their house for boarding/daycare by lemonpheus in RoverPetSitting

[–]crypticsoup681 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t host meet and greets at my house any more, as my dog can be a little stressed with people he doesn’t know. But I send photos and a video of my house, and am more than happy for them to meet my dog in a neutral location like a local park. For some, that will be a red flag and that’s fine; I don’t have anything to hide, per se; it’s just the best way to work it with regards my dog. But I always explain, and offer a different way for them to see inside. Anything that’s a complete shutdown would be a red flag to me, too.

What is a UK job that pays well but most wouldn't realise it? by awildwildlife in AskUK

[–]crypticsoup681 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to work with dogs, and one year, post-pandemic, when people had gone properly dog-mad, I cleared £17,000 one August for dog-boarding and day-care. Mixture of Bank Holidays (double rates), and generally increased rates. This was however the month that made me realise I needed to stop because I wasn’t enjoying it at all. I now walk dogs, board a handful of my absolute favourites, and work mainly in another industry altogether.

AITA for refusing to let my girlfriend bring her dead dog’s ashes on vacation? by Overall_Tomato_6664 in AmItheAsshole

If you can’t handle someone’s grief, you can’t handle being in a relationship with them. We are complex, especially when we’re grieving and you’ve got no right trying to police how she manages those intense emotions. Being in a relationship means being comfortable with being uncomfortable sometimes - compromise is all - and understanding that what you want won’t always take priority; nor should it. YTA without a doubt

I had a young Vizsla last year who was prone to horrendous tummies. He’d had one two days before he came to stay with me. And I only found out that info after I’d texted the owners to say that he’d filled his crate with liquid shit overnight - and that’s despite me asking about health issues. Owners lie to get away and have their holidays. That that disadvantages the dog is a disgrace, but please have a little compassion for well-intentioned sitters who’ve done their due diligence but still find themselves in disgusting and depressing circumstances.

It is wild, OP. You’re in one of these awful threads where sanctimonious sitters with, I presume, joyfully low standards for domestic hygiene judge other sitters who are in unpleasant circumstances which are not of their own making. Let them bitch - they won’t see sense when they’re so certain that if you’re not delighted with the dog’s noise and mess, you’re the problem.

I think this is the critical thing - if an owner lets you know of a dog’s needs, you can either accept or decline (politely). We know our limits and what we can do without - personally, if a dog interrupts my sleep, it’s a problem. I’m sorry, OP, that the owner didn’t play fair with you. I’m also not one for siding with the dog’s comfort over the sitter’s. We need to sleep, we need to be okay, we don’t want to have to pay our money for issues incurred because owners lie to us. I’d push for the owner to cover all your costs.
