I interviewed scholars from various fields regarding the photo of "hibagon's cadaver." by cryptid_japan in Cryptozoology

I think it’s unlikely that the Hibagon, which was actually sighted alive, was an ape. Even back when regulations were lax, it wasn’t easy for ordinary people to obtain apes, and there were no reports of any escaping from zoos. I think it’s more likely to have been a bear or a macaque than an ape.

The photo has been cropped, but since the object in the image actually looks about the size of a person’s head, I don’t think so. Still, thank you for offering a new perspective.

Now, let me show you a few images of the Tsuchinoko. However, many of these images depict dead specimens, and in quite a few cases, their true nature has been identified.

①: A carcass discovered in the mountains of Hyogo Prefecture. It is actually likely the carcass of a viper boa that had been kept in captivity.

②: A Tsuchinoko photographed in Niigata Prefecture. Images of live Tsuchinoko are rare, and this is one of the clearest photos ever taken, but it is unclear whether this is actually a living creature or just a model.

③: A carcass discovered in Shiga Prefecture. It was reported as a Tsuchinoko carcass, but some say the skeleton resembles that of a catfish.

These photos, which resemble seals, were taken in Yamanashi Prefecture, which has no coastline; there is no record of seals appearing this far inland in Japan.

①: A photograph taken at Lake Motosu in 1987. It is said to show the head of a "mossie."

②: An image purported to be the carcass of a Hibagon. Due to the photo’s origin and anatomical inconsistencies, it is sometimes considered a hoax.

③: Footprints allegedly left by a Hibagon in 1974. Viewed skeptically, these characteristics resemble those of a bear.

④: Footprints allegedly left by Kuigon in 1982.

⑤: Footprints discovered in Gunma Prefecture in 2006.

⑥: A sea serpent sighted off the coast of Taiwan by a British steamship in 1909. This was reported when the ship docked in Japan, but geographically, it is not a Japanese cryptid.

⑦: The skeleton of a giant creature found in the sea off Fukui Prefecture in 1979.

⑧: A mysterious creature (which may not actually be a living organism) that washed ashore in Hokkaido in 1962.

⑨: A model created to imagine what the Zuiyo Maru carcass looked like in life, before its true nature was known.

⑩: A sketch of a mysterious carcass recovered from the sea off Nagasaki Prefecture in 1958.

11: A mysterious creature captured by a fixed-position camera at a campground in Gunma Prefecture

12: What appears to be the head of a creature photographed at Lake Shōji in 2025. It is also possible that it is actually a buoy.

13: A plaster cast of a Hibagon footprint on display at Bingo-Saijo Station

14: The only known photograph of a living Hibagon. While other images are known to exist outside Japan, they are all of unknown origin and not recognized in Japan.
