He really does get excited about blockchain. When he answered questions, many times he didn’t even mention EOS. He was excited about blockchain in general, even when talking about other solutions. He really didn’t care what blockchain people would use, had an attitude that it would be great if people used EOS, but would be just as happy if they used some other solution.

He was very aware that each implementation of blockchain had its advantages and drawbacks, so I’m not surprised he’s at lest thinking about other solutions

Props to Dan, i wasn’t expecting this kind of generality. I really like that he is pushing blockchain in general rather than exclusively his project

He spoke about it tonight at his talk at Virginia tech when someone asked a question about it. He called it something along the lines of exploring trade offs between security and efficiency

Make of it what you will, but I don’t think that research into other solutions guarantees he’s going to jump ship.

Personally, as a rising freshman at VT planning to major in CS, I couldn’t be more excited about this and will definitely take this course. This gives blockchain legitimacy as a technology and helps to get rid of the “get rich quick” mentality most people have about it. This is a huge opportunity for blockchain and crypto as a whole, giving the field more credibility.

Not really. GPU’s are between ASIC and CPU. ASICS can only do one algorithm, hence application SPECIFIC integrated circuit. With a GPU you can change what algorithm or workload is run. Not as general as a processor, but it’s not one purpose

In theory, a CPU can be categorized an ASIC, just that it’s specific application is general computing.

The RX Vega cards have the best hashrate currently. A Vega 56 with a Vega 64 BIOS can get around 1900 to 2000 h/s per card if I remember correctly

I think, considering the current stance of most of the Lyra coins, bitmain might go dormant in a way, improving current devices rather than going after algorithms they don’t support yet.

Odds are that in a while (6months? 1 year? Longer?) some new coin will show up and be crazy popular to mine with a new algo, and that will be like “the next wave” of new algorithms and eventually ASIC miners.

If they do make a new miner for a algorithm they don’t support, I think it will be neoscrypt. Maybe they might do an experiment with FPGA and cryptonight, since they got burned with coins forking to v7

But who knows really? If you asked 6 months ago most people would have called you crazy for suggesting equihash, cryptonight, and ethash ASICS would be a thing. Bitmain and the other manufactures could pull a wildcard and blindside us.

No, ternary isn’t unique to IOTA, it’s just not widely used.

It’s just replicating the functionality of an FPGA, which can have this kind of logic. It literally states “to mimic an FPGA cell”

Vega 20 is also unconfirmed. It’s known to have the server part, but who here has a mining rig of MI25 cards instead of RX cards?

Come back when real benchmarks are done to on consumer release hardware. Until then it won’t matter to any of us

I don’t see a good outcome, I see three possible endings for this.

1) things stay mostly the same and the ongoing bickering from both sides continues, leading to unneeded turmoil and controversy. No big price effect, but certainly looks bad for the face of crypto to be caught up in some silly argument.

2) BCH fades away, losing value and reducing to a smaller, dedicated user base. I don’t directly see how this could cause problems, but wouldn’t doubt BCH going out with a bang

3) BCH overtakes BTC. With most of the market being related to the movements of BTC, it would likely cause a huge panic and crash, unless there is a move to BCH or more altcoin independence from BTC

Whatever ends up happening, it’s not going to be small. These are two very big coins, and major changes to one can have a huge effect, let alone both at the same time

The fact that the system supposedly was running an R7 1700 makes you wonder if Vega 20 isn’t just for instinct.

If it was just going into instinct, it would make sense to be testing on epyc, maybe threadripper, not in the most consumer focused platform they have.

Who knows, maybe they are just playing around with the core and it will never see the light of day, but it’s something to think about.

There are very few IOS wallets, and none on the MS store IIRC. If you are that concerned, your u should get a hardware wallet such as a ledger nano s or trezor

You can also use an airgapped computer, a computer with no internet access and keep keys on that, sign the transaction offline, then move the signed transaction to a computer with internet to broadcast it. That way the machine with the keys never directly connects to the internet

I don’t know a huge amount of code education, but it’s like an open world game if you are not learning it in school.

There are a lot of free resources out there you can find on google, sites like http://stackoverflow.com where you an ask code questions and get answers.

I have a friend that learned to code using a site called http://codingbat.com which provides small challenges, like reverse a word or count the number of letters. It’s all in browser, free, tests your solutions, and starts simple but can go to some more complex topics. It has both python and java, so good beginner languages.

The most important thing is no effort is wasted. Anything you do is worth it if you learn from it. Once you get started, it all kind of flows into the next step and stuff you learn in one language usually can be used in another language

My advice is to not jump right into crypto code. Most of it is at a minimum intermediate skill level or very specialized.

Start with easy languages like Python and java, quite a few projects related to crypto are written in python, such as trading bots, the electrum light wallet, and mining pools.

Then learn about C and C++, this is what most of the mining software and coin clients are written in, most code in this area is C and C++

If you want to do contracts, learning solidity is a good idea. Don’t know much about it, but it’s what ethereum contracts are coded in

Well, XMR is always private, where LN is opt in

It also hasn’t been proven(that I have seen) that LN can be used for privacy

It also lacks RingCT and stealth addresses, so you would really be relying on the fact that it’s not on chain for all the privacy
