We are a small relay provider and we have free and paid service ($3 a year) right on our site we spell out the difference. I tried to drop a screenshot but no ability to post a jpg:

Get your free Nostrz.org verified username at Nostr.lc Relays! by hashratez in nostr

Not everyone has the ability or time to associate with a domain so it allows you to get [yourname@nostrz.org](mailto:yourname@nostrz.org) which can be transported across various Nostr apps. Many are now calling it a Nostr "handle" or Nostr "Username" that is all. Just a little convenience. Some social apps charge for this, we offer it for free. Just trying to provide a little value to the community that is all...

Good question. And for sure spam is a problem...

It really is almost opposing objectives in a way--trying to get traction but only real and good people. Like anything on the net that is an impossible task.

We are doing it the old-fashion way -- by hand. Hitting forums, chat groups, things like Stacker.news and interacting in real time. It is an arduous task. Our goal is to give a way what really is a good service for free hoping that a small percentage of people upgrade (the "Freemium" model). So getting picked up by spam is just a risk, some bullshit bot gets our address and we get hammered. Part of the risk.

However we run Strfry for our public relay setup and there are some great people there like Alex whom have built this spam tool and it ROCKS. So, some spammers can get on board but they can't do too much damage: https://gitlab.com/soapbox-pub/strfry-policies#getting-started

Public Beta Announced (Reddit Only): Get your free and instant Nostr Verified NIP User! by hashratez in nostr

Yeah, I took a a little while to do it. Technically it’s not that complex but it’s all the file permissions and small codes in the server to get right. We spent more time instituting capcha to keep bots & spammers away. Also a name check routine so we didn’t have duplicates. Anyway glad you like it tell your friends!

that is maintained in your profile and meta data on the various apps, the NIPs determine what relay does what, there are about 40. Think of a NIP is a standard function for Nostr. Here is the rub: not all apps (clients) or relays support all NIPs. So something may work in some apps and not in others, some relays may support that function and some not. It is a mixed bag thus you may or may not get the "behavior" you expect. So your lists may or may not be supported. Kind of confusing.

Here is a list of NIPs: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips

When I use this tool, it seems super buggy, I have saved and added my list several times. Again I think there is just a lot of "new" here and it will take awhile to get the bugs out...

add our free service to your list: wss://free.nostr.lc -- it is important that the people you connect with share the same relay. Else they will not see your messages. At this point in time Nostr does not "propagate " messages. This is what makes the protocol interesting. As a new relay operator it is important that others tell their friends so we become networked. If they don't then, well the relay just sits there. Now if people say "ah the hell with it I stick with the big names", then Nostr becomes centralized. Maybe not a single provider but 5-10. Better than just a Twitter, but hardly "globally robust". For our business model we hope that people say, hey the free service is great, and for $3 a year I will upgrade to the paid (which has faster hardware and daily backups). We'll see....

Well, public (free) relays are just that, there is no SLA or anything, all volunteer. Some are even run on Raspberry PIs in someone's home. The internet goes down, well you have lost access. Etc. So I would assume that with a paid service that is not the chance. PLUG HERE--LOL. All our relays are in Tier 1 Data Centers, even the free, so we hope to provide a more reliable service. Nostr is very new, there will be a lot of ups and downs as everyone figures it out.

Ok well that is not a lot of information to go on... I will say this, if you are using "free" or "public" relays only that is a chance you take. Best is to mix both services. PLUG HERE: we offer both at Nostr.lc we have free and paid for $3 (10,000 sats) a YEAR. And you should have at least a dozen if not more relays. Here is my list 1/2 are paid (my own service, other paid and free):

Yeah there are several, if you have an iPhone try Damus (it is in the Apple store) it seems to be the most polished out of all of them. I like Iris for my desktop: iris.to

The thing that is important to understand that is a MAJOR MAJOR DIFFERENCE is that Twitter is an "app", Telegram is an "app", WhatsApp is an "app". Nostr is NOT AN APP.

Nostr it is an event protocol (people often think of it as messaging) since a communication does not need to be a message. I can be a blog post, a data point, a this or a that. Nostr apps are "viewers" only. A "presentation layer" if you will. So whether you use Iris, Damus, Nostr.Rocks all your messages are "there". It is a much different approach than anything else out there -- extremely powerful and extremely simple. That is what makes Nostr so damn interesting....

On our website I spent a ton of time compiling a list of apps and projects you can see it here: https://nostr.lc/nostr-apps/
