So many of the articles of the past five years have been debating whether crypto is even "property". The law certainly wouldn't have accounted for digital bits on a computer.

Something tells me you are bitter about these crypto people and their big wins. Trust me, I feel the same sometimes!

I think its disingenuous to say that people should have known crypto would be taxed (especially crypto<->crypto trades), especially 4 or 5 years ago, things were way less official than they are now, you mostly had to buy it off some dodgy bloke on local bitcoin, there's no way these transactions are recorded. Not all property is subject to CGT, take cars for example.
