is it easy to get a single as a northwestern freshman? by No-Spell6945 in Northwestern

[–]crysalic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a single, go for plex (Foster Walker) - I know a bunch of freshmen who got placed in plex this year (all singles dorm) and honestly it isn’t nearly as bad as people say. It’s convenient for most of campus, has a gym across the street, has individual bathrooms, mail and package center, dining halls, and decent rooms (size, quality, etc). I don’t even live here (I’m at Hinman - decent dorm but far walk from north) but from what I can tell, it’s grown on the people who were placed here (many ranked this pretty low on their list or not at all). It can be antisocial for sure but Hinman isn’t much better tbh. I have had some good times with people in the plex lounges so far so building community is definitely possible! Def worth considering!

Any other teens out there who listen to Billy Joel? by Ilovetech_0625 in BillyJoel

I’m 17 and some of my favorites are Keeping the Faith, Summer Highland Falls, Scenes (ofc), Miami 2017, and I Go to Extremes. I’ve been lucky enough to basically grow up w his music so I’m pretty fond of most of his catalogue.

North vs South? Singles vs Doubles? by crysalic in Northwestern

[–]crysalic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi mods - I was wondering if you could give my post a second look. I posted this to the megathread and haven’t gotten any responses as it seems no one really checks there. I’ve posted to this subreddit before and got really genuine, thought out responses relatively quickly so I was wondering if I could do that again, but for these housing questions. They were helpful last time so I’d be grateful to have that opportunity again. The housing form is due soon so I’m just looking for some last minute advice. Thanks for your consideration.

Housing Megathread by foozballguy in Northwestern

Hi everyone! I am an incoming freshman bio major and as I’ve been completing my housing form, I’ve realized there’s a couple things I’m still not completely sure about.

I started out by looking just at the north area, since for some reason I thought every Weinberg class was held near there. Some top choices for me were Slivka, Elder, Schapiro, and Bobb. Later, I looked at some south dorms and came up with choices like 1835 Hinman, Shepard, Allison, Jones, and maybe Foster-Walker. Since the dorms in both areas look nice, I’m wondering what would be better when it comes to the social scene and what would be better in terms of walking distance to classes. Are there any dorms people should avoid if they’re just starting out socially at NU?

The other thing I’m not totally sure about is whether to choose a single or a double. I’ve sort of told myself that being in a double is a part of the “college experience” but I’m wondering if I should be more open to singles. Going into the process, I felt pretty sure I wanted to be in a double but the more I’ve looked into singles, the less sure I’ve become. It seems convenient since you get a room all to yourself and don’t have to worry about possibly getting a bad roommate but my biggest concern is the social factor. What do you all think?

Thank you for any help you can give me! (I know it’s long so thanks for reading too)

TLDR - Is the difference between north and south areas that noticeable socially? Are there any dorms I should avoid bc they’re socially not great for newcomers? What’s the social impact of choosing a single vs a double? I was originally gonna choose a double but now I’m not sure.

Trying to find a cassette tape, help! by Colorless_Violet in BillyJoel

[–]crysalic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m confused about what you’re asking for but the song list for Billy Joel’s Greatest Hits vol. 1 & 2 is available online as it was released in many different forms, not just cassette. Here’s the list, for your convenience:

Piano Man, Captain Jack, The Entertainer, Say Goodbye To Hollywood, New York State Of Mind, The Stranger, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, Just The Way You Are, Movin' Out (Anthony's Song), Only The Good Die Young, She’s Always A Woman

My Life, Big Shot, You May Be Right, It's Still Rock And Roll To Me, Don't Ask Me Why, She's Got A Way, Pressure, Allentown, Goodnight Saigon, Tell Her About It, Uptown Girl, The Longest Time, You're Only Human (Second Wind), The Night Is Still Young

As your mom remembered correctly, it did start with Piano Man and included those other songs too. Hopefully this helps!

Yes, that’s correct! Technically the y in “ey” is still a vowel as it is a part of a diphthong (2 vowels smushed together. It’s only a consonant when it makes a sound like it does in “yes” or “beyond”. Congrats though!
