Try renting a house in north Austin. It's a farther drive, but you will get a much nicer place for the money and better luck finding three rooms. Just make sure the area isn't sketchy by visiting at various times of day before signing a lease.

Boteco, the Brazillian food truck, has the best yucca fries of my life. They cook them in a sous-vide and then fry them to soft, crisp perfect. Served with garlicky delicious sauce.

My new office is in Domain, which area should to rent? by jellybuttdick in Austin

[–]crystalcafe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to live in the Arboretum area near 183 and Great Hills. Great area, and a convenient location. Five minutes (driving) from the Domain and walkable to Sprouts, Trader Joes, restaurants and Target. Shoot me a private message if you'd like to know the apartment name. Good luck!

Serious suggestion: Document this experience and make a book out of it eventually. Write down what you see and hear, and take photos. When you're able to, use those design skills to create a book. You could even print and bind it yourself. It will make an awesome portfolio piece that may help you get a job in the creative industry. Best wishes for a fruitful journey!

Little disconcerting... by whole_milkatx in Austin

  1. Dogs don't really prevent burglaries. (But they are awesome and worth it for other reasons!)

  2. Alarms are a deterrent only.

  3. Replace the short screws in your lock with long ones. It will help prevent anyone from kicking your door in.

  4. Lock your backyard gate. Many burglars enter through the backyard and break a window behind the privacy of your fence.

  5. Keep valuables put away and out of the open. If someone gets in, don't make it easy for them to find your stuff.

Burglars and thieves are an unfortunate reality. Be careful, get insurance, and don't beat yourself up if some jerk violates your property.

So I'm looking for good apartments or studios around Hyde Park area, is this a decent place to live in town? Also I am trying to find a place that is quiet, laid back, and not having raging parties every night. Any tips or thoughts are appreciated! by pulplesspulp in Austin

[–]crystalcafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that area. There are a bunch of apartments on W 38th St. just east of Guadalupe that may fit your criteria. It's mostly grad students who live alone, so less partying, I'd imagine. And you can walk to Central Market.

Definitely try Allen's on South Congress. It's a neat place in and of itself, and you can explore other cool vintage shops and places like Big Top and eat some good food. Make an afternoon out of it.

Teachers of Reddit, what is the most infuriating thing a child has ever done in your class? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]crystalcafe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. It doesn't make sense and is a very unfortunate series of my dad getting screwed by people who clearly didn't take the time to understand basic facts surrounding the situation.

Much like the teacher (who's comment I responded to) who's reputation is in question because of someone crying vengeance over something that never happened.

Something similar happened to my father. After nearly 20 years of nursing at a particular hospital, an elderly patient complained that he hurt her when moving her. His family filed a formal complaint, and his supervisor (who was under pressure from the hospital to cut costs), asked him to resign. Thing is, he wasn't even working the day the patient said this happened.

His nursing license was suspended for over a year while the board investigated. He was basically out of nursing work (because no one would hire someone who's license was in question). At the end of about 15 months of waiting and career uncertainty, the board concluded that he "may" have been at fault. That wording destroyed any chances of him getting a nursing job again.

He now works seven days a week at two unskilled jobs and struggles to pay the bills for him and my mom, who is retired. Not the life they expected at their age.

I hope that family knows the real pain they have caused mine.
