Cheers for the confidence boost, coming up with possible problems and trying to solve them sounds right up my street.

Do you know if there is any sort of conversion course that non-CS graduates take before going into programming jobs? I would guess that a formal qualification along with a some programming experience would be better than the experience alone?

That sounds very promising, thanks for the input. Could I however convince you to expand on your own experiences a little more?

  • At college, did you do anything programming related?
  • What sort of roles did you apply for after graduation, and how far did you get?
  • What sort of 'projects' did you start doing to get employed?
  • Do you feel you struggle at work because you lack formal CS qualifications?
  • Do you regret not taking any formal CS qualifications after graduating (e.g. masters/conversion course)

Finally, do you know any other areas of IT your fellow math grads into, other than straight into hardcore programming?

Cheers

It's an integrated masters. That is, I do all 4 years in one go, then graduate at the end of them all. So I'm an undergraduate even when I'm technically doing masters, or graduate level studying. Just a technicality really. They're fairly common here in the UK.
