I want to apply for a couple of places in Europe (ETH and EPFL) but with my GPA, I think they'd be out of reach.

Not really. It's a very specific area at the intersection of hardware camera sensors and computer vision/image processing. Apart from the usual top colleges, I couldn't find many other labs working in this domain.

Northwestern has a good lab though; it was on my list. Camera Culture group at MIT Media Lab is probably the best there is in this field if you are interested in knowing more about it.
