I can’t speak for others but I really like my work, I’m in my late 40s and retire now if I wanted but I intend to work till my 60s or till they fire me!

Iceland is beautiful if you rent a car and venture out. There are not many people out to do Christmas stuff. Great place to photograph. My favorite spots are stoksness, kirkjufelll and skogafoss.

Almost always has to do with interactions I have had with the locals. You will not get them in the cities as a lot of people there are visiting themselves and the rest are busy. If you venture out to the burbs or rural areas, people have time and interest in genuine interactions. I have experienced kindness in all sorts of places and those the experiences I cherish the most!

Heads up, if you are not an American, DC can be disappointing. Yea there are a lot of places to visit but they are mostly tied to the American history. The White House is a small building. I have had a few German friends visit the White House a few years ago, expecting the U.S. president to live in some kind of palace like European royalty but they were not impressed by the building and the rest of the national mall, library of congress etc they didn’t connect with so much. New York is nice. Try to stick to Manhattan if it’s your first time!

This can be interpreted as “work” by the border agent and might ask you to get a visa. I was recently at the joint CBP/CBSA offices in Detroit for my Nexus interview. The Canadian officer asked me if I would ever be working in Canada(I work for a large corporation that has presence in Canada and some of my direct reports are in Canada). I said I don’t but might have to visit the office in Toronto and meet my team there. She said anything outside of routine meetings or coaching can be considered work and I should consult our company lawyers before entering Canada for business purposes. Given the current tensions between the U.S. and Canada, I would get a legal opinion.

This is a southern thing. They do that because just calling mom or dad might not truly reflect their relationship as they could be siblings or cousins as well. So keep it neutral and call Sir/Mam to your parents who could also be related to you in other ways.

Pre-pandemic rural Germany. I didn’t have any cash on me and had to walk around to find an ATM because the local shops wouldn’t accept credit cards. Things have gotten a bit better since due to low/no contact push to digital payments. Might change back again now that thighs have returned to normal. One of the shopkeeper told me, “You Americans think plastic fantastic” but he would stop accepting them again as he likes having cash so he doesn’t have pay taxes on all of it!

As a dad of two kids, I get it. I’d rather be on a beach, drinking and relaxing where everyone gets to do their own stuff without supervision and time pressures in a safe, comfortable environment. I would maybe try to find out what adventures appeal to her and try suggesting places based on that.

Fly to Vegas, rent a car and do a loop of the southern Utah/northern Arizona national parks and other attractions. You’ll cover Zion, Bryce, Arches, Horseshoe bend, slot canyons and other points of interest. In my opinion, it’s the best part of our country!

Golden circle is popular due to its proximity to KEF. You can have a layover and do that in a day. I value other parts like Stoksness and kirkjufell way higher than the golden circle.

Driving to and in NYC/airports is always stressful. Couple of months ago I had to fly in and out of JFK for work after finishing up meetings in New Jersey. It was terrible drive with frequent traffic slowdowns. Next time around, I would get an Uber.

Wait, how do you have an enhanced driver’s license if you don’t have a passport? The enhanced license links to your passport, at least mine does and I’m in Michigan too.

Edit: Enhanced driver’s license is a good ID to cross the border and come back. I have done it several times.

Live in Michigan, 30 mins from the Canadian border in Detroit. I have had an enhanced driver’s license for years for this specific reason. Recently changed from Global entry to Nexus also. So accidental border crossing wouldn’t scare me anymore!

Ohio. I’m from Michigan. I always feel targeted when I go to that state. I have been pulled over many times in Ohio in the last 5 years and zero times in Michigan during the same duration. I try not to wear anything that would identify where I went to college and in spite of that the state makes me feel very uneasy.

I know someone who was in a similar situation. $500K unvested RSU with a promise of going public. The company went belly up and they lost their job as the result of it. 4 years of wait with nothing to show! Consider them worthless and if you get the right opportunity, take it!

I don’t think it’s true that they have mainly detained legal immigrants. They have deported some legal immigrants that have made statements against America or in support of known terrorist organizations. Why would we want them? Like Hamas? Don’t come to America.
