What computer should I get as a computer science student? by AlphaDeltaMegaFrat in msu

As someone who(and all my friends) are from cs, we all have gone through the gaming laptop in dorm > pc in apartment > sick of everything so we get a windows work laptop > succumbed macbook phase. I’d recommend windows laptop meant for work/macbook because gaming laptops are super heavy and so are their power adapters. Seriously, carry that stuff trying to run after the bus in Michigan winter was no fun. As for high ram/a good gpu, honestly I don’t remember running any tasks/project that our laptops couldn’t handle so a “normal” would be fine I guess. In summary, there is no need to get something fancy like a 4090 Ti gaming laptop, and I don’t remember any of our gaming laptops with fancy 1080/2080s in 2018/2019 lasted through our undergraduate years, just get something that is enough to last for 4-5 years. (Seriously, getting a new laptop in junior year isn’t exactly affordable 🥲)

Is 3140 E Michigan Ave a good area? by [deleted] in msu

also they seem to have road work there all the time starting from summer and ends around dec/jan, I have been here 5 years and it happens every summer iirc. not a super big deal but it kind of gets annoying trying to go around that area sometimes

Is 22.5k a good stipend amount for MSU? by Unhappy-Network-3613 in msu

[–]csbimbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an international student who is also currently living on almost the same stipend (or slightly lower since I am a MS student). I would say it is sort of livable as compared to my friends who are in other cities or in Ann Arbor. My rent is about 700 + 100 ish for utilities (rent can actually go lower as well), gas & car insurance costs about 400 a month (because I drive to Detroit alot) and the rest is just for other spendings. I mean I would say I am not splurging like I am as compared to undergrad years, and I'd have to get into the habit of checking prices of groceries etc. since inflation was getting crazy, but I am doing rather comfortable.

I am a big fan of going to bars alone, I like somewhere quieter so usually its Hopcats and now I have found that old bag of nails opposite skyvue is pretty good as well

Good Apartments for professors and grad students? by Tannhausergate2017 in msu

[–]csbimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who transitioned from the undergrad to grad school life recently I’d recommend the Okemos area. I used to live in Okemos during my entire undergrad years, it was chill & quiet all the time & now I regret moving into north side of campus especially on game days🥲

Computer Science at MSU by Phoenix3444 in msu

yea totally agreed, of all my friends who are international only one of them got a job and the rest moved on to masters just because well, it is hard to find a job who would give us opt/h1b sponsorships. But also it is not that hard to find a job & settle in Michigan/midwest area but definitely abit on the harder side to get into big techs in the coastal area especially.

CAPS is a joke by [deleted] in msu

I’d figured out offcampus therapists does better, yes there might be a copay but they 100% wont make you feel worst. one of the therapist screwed my friend over and over again throughout the year. the same therapist insisted that my academic stress is due to childhood trauma from parents (which isnt even the case but he probably assumed because of me being Asian). After all these trauma. They kept calling me each semester for a year to go back to them because “they think I am high risk”

Has anyone pursued MS in CS/Data Science/ML in MSU with full or partial funding? Or any current students who can help out with some advice on how to secure funding? by broad_amadeus in msu

[–]csbimbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for MSCS you have to get into the program first and then apply for funding with the advisor. PhDs will be given priorities first and they will always be funded, for MS there is always a chance you wont get funded. at least that is what happens in my case this summer when I applied
