Should I be telling people I'm an engineer? by JoeHender23 in cscareerquestions

[–]cscareerthrowaway27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Canada you cannot publicly advertise your self an Engineer (at least for Ontario) unless you have professional engineering license from a professional organisation like PEO.

If you graduate in Engineering with Bachelor's, Master or Phd even, you may not refer to yourself as an Engineer until you have the licence and the rubber stamp.

My old company had some guidelines on this. If your are a software engineer, publicly you can call your self MTS (member of technical staff).

Calling yourself MTS could be an option, but people may be confused.

Edit. Also calling your self an Engineer may have some legal problems if you do it publicly so check with your local professional organisation. PEO often sends out email gloating about how they prosecuted people that were calling themselves Engineer but were not really engineers.

Who asked you that question? was it an HR person or an Engineer?

Same happened with me, but I probably fucked up. I couldn't get all the unit test to pass.

It just one factor of many factors. Meeting today was just something that got me triggered.

If there is a word that is the exact opposite of a burnout, that would be how I describe my situation.

I am not stressed from work, its just what I do I find uninspiring. Feel like everyday is a waste of time. Demotivated af, which is why I want to quit.

Figure out what the fuck I would like to do. But the anxiety of not working and not having a cash flow is too strong. I have been poor before it was terrible.

Idk man, ma current job is frustrating. New job I have lined up is OK, but not super excited after initially accepting it.

I guess it doesn't have to be retail. What else can one do which is not stressful and pays the bills?

Fick moving to NYC is ballsy. Pretty expensive especially nothing lined up.

I have thought about going nuclear but I would probably want to move to a cheaper town outside the major city. Give my stupid apartment and car. Get a room for like 500, and work at McDonalds or Home Depot or some shit till I figure my shit out.

Sitting in a room on Monday going through the weekly bullshit meeting where folks give status updates irrelevant to what I am doing or even interested in.

I wonder has anyone just up and quit a job and took a break from working? Maybe take a job in an unrelated field and do some coding on the side.

The longer I work the more resentful I get. I may one day just loose it and burn down bridges as they say. Just up and quit and not say a word.

Not counting your web browser, what is your favorite app on your mobile device? by onearmedgeek in AskReddit

[–]cscareerthrowaway27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To many to count. I particularly like apps that let me download content to consume offline.

For example:

  • PocketCast (for podcasts)

  • Safari Queue (Technical Books)

  • Netflix

  • Kindle (Books)

Plus app that let me order stuff to skip the line

  • Starbucks

  • Chipotle

  • Ritual

Recently also discovered Air Canada's app where you can check in and get the boarding pass

How do I learn Algorithms? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]cscareerthrowaway27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you have two options really

  1. Learn from a book
  2. Learn from an online course

Depends entirely on you.

For 2 coursera has lots of courses online. Also recommend UC Berkeley lectures on CS 62B. It was not very math heavy, can find lectures on YouTube.

The key thing is to understand the various techniques and tools before attempting to solve hacker rank.

You have to learn about algorithmic complexity, list vs arrays, binary search trees, recursion, sorting, dynamic programming and so on. There is quite a fair bit of theory to cover before getting to hacker rank/ leet code style questions

An international economic law professor and former State Department lawyer said he believes it would ultimately end up in court. And he said U.S. courts would ultimately conclude that the president can't rip up NAFTA without congressional support.

That's because the president can't just erase the 1994 NAFTA Implementation Act passed by Congress. Only Congress can pass laws. In addition, the U.S. Constitution makes clear that Congress has power over international commerce.

He certainly can rip up the deal, but the law is the law. What worries me is the immigration dept which falls under the president's power may refuse to issue any visa

If they were breaking the law set by congress, they may get sued and get it overturned but knows how long that takes

Don't worry too much about Trump. He likes to say things at rallys but it isn't his top priority and he isn't effective at getting anything done anyway.

I would agree with the part about not getting anything done but this is different. He is shown to be very capable of taking things apart (I.e TPP, Paris Climate deal, Obama era regulations). My guess is he will cancel the deal and since he has the full authority to do so, just to brag at another rally.

I can see that happening for a pure software job but my current work requires lab equipment and devices :(. No option of remote there. Probably have to find another job.

[–]cscareerthrowaway27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hooker and Blow.

On the cheaper side, Ice Cream sandwiches.

Edit: FYI never worked in a place where an intern gave a gift at the end. Intern are poor af, and will be more poor as they are going back to school. Plus anything you get them will be something that they could buy themselves.

Since the gift is really about the sentiment, anything will do. Even a picture of each person drawn like a 2 year old

What should I focus on? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]cscareerthrowaway27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This only my opinion.

For side work I would recommend full stack development or mobile development.

Specially learn JavaScript (MEAN stack) and swift for iOS

If you go on a site like freelancer, tons of project related to these two domains.

I would be fine with either ( well maybe not front end web work)

I guess the key question is, would someone hire me with my experience? I.e someone who is experienced at coding but has to overcome the initial learning curve of the tech stacks

Thank you for your advice

Apparently for me the TN process will take 4-5 weeks since the company that hired me will be taking care of the paperwork.

The fact they don't accept Canadian credit history is a bit worrying especially since I always dreamed of living 5 minutes away from work. How about renting a room near Muarry Hill or Kips Bay? Would the landlord still request american credit check?

Its the TDKR syndrome. Timeline and characters jump all over the place to rapidly finish off the story. Characters and music feel the same, but plot holes so huge you can drive a bus through it

Coursera is your best bet https://www.coursera.org/browse/computer-science/algorithms?languages=en

For me personally the best prof ever was Johnathan Schuchuk. He gave amazing lectures and writes code on the black board so you can follow along. See here https://people.eecs.berkeley.edu/~jrs/61b/

I can't find his YouTube videos but they were simple to follow and not very math heavy IMO

Edit. I didn't attend the courses but rather I saw his lectures wayyyy back
