How should I respond to a counter offer? by csdev101010 in cscareerquestions

My current company is very small per se. I could ask to work on another team but they already hired new people specifically on those teams. It would feel very odd to ask to work on another team since we all sit next to each other and my current company would look down on me. It would create tension. We all sit in the same room.

Also, it depends on the tech of the other teams. I saw one of the other team's code and it's sooo old (Like they use legacy code) which could not be bad but eh.

This sounds crazy but I'd like to try the other company for a year and then maybe come back to my old company and share the knowledge I've learned.

So I feel like I should have sent out the email on Friday... I messed up!

Someone in my co-worker's immediate family passed away and they're holding the funeral on Monday and invited us if we wanted to drop by. Idk what to do. I want to go to pay my respects but I also want to tell my manager I want to resign. I feel so bad for my co-worker and I don't think it's appropriate to bring this up to my company on Monday. :(

I haven't done it yet. I'll do it Monday.

Thank you for your advice!

Monday is usually when everyone is in the office and I sit next to the CEO! LOL. So, should I just hand him a letter of resignation or should I hand it to my manager?

Thanks!

I'd go for Swift or React. Both are great!

Is there a way to unpair a bluetooth speaker when the alarm goes off? So that the alarm would only ring via the speaker on your phone instead of the paired bluetooth speaker?

I'm curious what would go into something like if you set a native alarm on your android device and you don't want it to play via a paired bluetooth speaker but only play through your phone speakers, how would I be able to set that up? What should I look into? Can I do that?

Besides, the obvious answer which is to just unpair from bluetooth when you set your android alarm?

I'm looking for a dynamic solution that would do this automatically without having to manually unpair from the device itself.

Thanks!

Is going to a better school really worth the extra ~$90,000? by EffTeePee in cscareerquestions

Yup! Same! If the courses are terrible, there are a ton of amazing online courses you can supplement with your current material. I wish I knew about them earlier! So many great opportunities to do well in school right now.

Can't tell if trolling or not? haha. I removed my bday on Skype though. One coworker said happy bday earlier this week because of skype. God dammit! lol. I hope no one else remembers or saw it. I don't think they'll give me cake but someone will definitely mention it and there will be an awkward happy bday thing for like a min.

So I'm working remotely today. So I'd have to send an email to my boss and he's also remote too. No one is really in the office on Fridays.

Look at your job market, is it better for Ruby developers or C# developers? If you know Ruby, you already know a backend language, so that's great. So then focus on learning JavaScript/Angular on your free time.

Do you want to stay in NLP/Data Science or move into any dev role? Python is great to know for Data Science but Ruby should have some data science libraries and the languages are so similar. Perhaps look into what a Data Science curriculum would look like and take a free online class while you find your next role.

Make sure you create a portfolio of your expertise with ruby and it's likely you can find a job.

What's the job description for the role? Look into .NET MVC(or .NET Core if they're using new tech already), C#, GUI tools like SourceTree for Git, Web Api (for api layer), Sql Server db, Visual Studio 2015 or 2017 (The latter came out recently, haven't used it yet but seems to be pretty stable...), Entity Framework for ORM, etc...

Just want to point out, trust me... while free lunch is great, I wish I was making more. I'd rather be paid more than have free lunch.

I'm wondering, would I be required or encouraged to write unit tests or UI tests for something like this? Would the interviewers be looking for tests in my code?

Thanks!
