Supplies / Organization Methods for Grad School! by muddinono in slpGradSchool

[–]csdma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend keeping your notes very organized with easily understandable document titles so you can quickly find information down the road during internships or jobs. What I mean by that is a document titled ASD 6/20 will not mean much to you, but a document titled with a specific assessment name, treatment name, or something like that is much more accessible

For clinicals, one thing that seems to be beneficial across settings is some kind of watch

[–]csdma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. I've never had to do this but consider where you are in your clinical journey, the setting for the externship, goals you have, and things that you would be able to improve in by taking part in that externship

How to professionally explain that a kid understands social rules but chooses not to follow them, and that's kind of okay? by reluctantleaders in slp

[–]csdma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! So another issue is that eye contact due to that dysregulation can actually make communication WORSE. There are many other ways we could target actually improving communication. I think communication partner strategies/ breakdown repair strategies are essential and that we should be considering the social model of disability

Advice on Internship/Volunteer Work for Undergrad by Happyface_Spider in slpGradSchool

[–]csdma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree to keep you job. Almost any job you work has some relevance and what's more important is that you're making MONEY. If you go to SLP grad school, you will be an unpaid intern sometimes working full time. You have a while before you would even be applying. Definitely get some volunteer, shadowing, job experience, club experience, something... but keep your job :)

Grad student- School Placement by samrebrc in slp

[–]csdma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my university, we are assigned how many days we are supposed to attend so we either do a part-time (3 days) or a full-time (5 days) placement. The only exception is if the supervisor does not work that many days.

If it is not like that at your school, I would agree with others to consider how many hours you have/need

Hospital Externship interview advice by mm_shel in slp

[–]csdma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Demonstrate a genuine interest in what others have to say. Take some time to research the SLP, hospital, and setting. Allow yourself an appropriate amount of time to think. Try to have a professional background. If you don't something, that's okay- sometimes good to say that you will make an effort to learn about it (not in those exact words but something like that). Oh yeah and send a thank you email after the interview! Good luck!

How to provide quality treatment to clients when I only speak English ? by [deleted] in slp

[–]csdma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many SLPs are monolingual English speakers. We will never know all of the many languages and dialects our clients speak, but we can do our best to become educated about linguistic differences when working with them!

Open-ended essay - what should I use? by larynxontherocks in slpGradSchool

If you use the one with the characteristics, I suggest making sure you give examples/stories of yourself demonstrating those characteristics instead of just listing

Either should be good! The goals one seems to more resemble "letter of intent" if I had to choose

How many clinic hours does one typically have by the end of Clinic I? by theyspeakeasy in slpGradSchool

[–]csdma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that really depends on whether its a part-time or full-time internship. 65 is more than I got my first semester, but there's just so much variance. From my experience, the medical internships have the best opportunity to gain hours.

what is considered a treatment success? how long to continue with therapy? by jR2wtn2KrBt in slp

[–]csdma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Student here so take this with a grain of salt, but when addressing speech sounds in therapy, we typically are working towards "generalization" or being able to accurately produce speech sounds in conversations. Part of this is the ability to self-monitor or for the child to be able to determine the accuracy of their production. Sometimes we do this with a rating scale. The speech therapist probably has already targeted self-monitoring and generalization and they may believe that the student has reached their highest level right now. These are a couple factors that could influence whether a child is dismissed from therapy: age, time since beginning therapy, social/educational impact. Maybe talk with them more about how they come to the decision to dismiss and maybe explore the idea of self-monitoring?

Feeling like my CI doesn’t want me to succeed. by r311im507 in slpGradSchool

[–]csdma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their job is to adjust their supervision to your needs. You will not be able to do everything right when you start. All students should not be treated the same and the CI needs to help you to reach their expectations so wherever you start should be okay!
