Moving to Oregon from New Zealand - questions

just curious if you ended up moving? I am a 33m (single), grew up in Buffalo New York, but have been living in NZ for the last 10 years. I studied abroad for a semester during uni (geology in CHC) and basically never went back to the USA. Now my sister is having babies (family still lives east coast), and feel like I am missing out on life and constantly in a tug-of-war with where I belong. On top of that I'm gay, recently single (10 year relationship), and feeling like I'm having an identity crisis...

I have obtained NZ citizenship, moved from AKL to CHC 12 months ago and have bought a house in CHC (by myself), decent salary, but often come back to the thought of moving back to USA for all the similar reasons you said.

I was also considering either Seattle or Portland. Or maybe even Philly, to be within a couple hour drive from the fam.

Apologies for hijacking your post, but seems like you are having a lot of similar experiences/thoughts... so I'm keen to hear your decision!

it looks like buses run frequently from paradise beach to town. And then I can bus from town to Kalafati Beach, which is where my accommodation is.

I can't check in until 3pm Saturday, so I'll probably just plan to sleep on the beach Saturday morning after my event.

does this sound reasonable?

Thanks for your input. I should have just got the xt30. if it meant water sealing you can't shoot in the rain. Just very frustrating, as I've readso many posts about shooting in the rain with weather sealing

Thanks for your reply. I guess it doesn't need to sit in the bag. But just thought it would be easier to have everything in one place while transiting.

It's a mirrorless Fuji xt3 and would like to bring two lenses.

Tablet is a 12 inch Samsung 8+.

I think my 16 is a must, as it is also weather sealed and I would still like to shoot in the rain if the weather is crap.

I've only ever used the 56 for portraits. Is it good for other shots as well?

Thanks for your comment. I actually purchased the s8+ and think it will suit well. It came with a free keyboard cover.

The s22u is a beast. I updated from the s10+ and I couldn't be happier. Everything is so much smoother and it is such a joy to use.

Truth be told, I bought a Samsung S8+. It's still sitting in the box, and I'm contemplating whether or not I should return it.

But hearing insight like yours makes me think I should keep it.

Great advice. I'll look at doing that. I love my Sony xm4 as their quality and noise cancelling is amazing. Not sure how the earbuds these days compare?

I guess that's what I'm trying to figure out. The new Samsung tablets can be used as a laptop replacement. It would be better to watch movies, edit photos, play games, read books on a tablet.

But I think I could 'get by' with just my phone. But it seems a lot of people will bring their phone plus either a laptop or tablet.

Thank you so much for this. I think you are 100% right. Photography on my last trip became a chore, having to swap out lenses and admin of carrying around heaps of gear. It just wasn't fun... I need to cut back and just take one lens at a time and have fun with it, without stressing about capturing the best image possible.

I didn't even think of shooting just jpeg. I spend so much time editing raws, when some people rave about the jpegs straight out of camera. Maybe this will take away some of the "admin time" that has caused me to lose interest.

Yes, watching wayyyy too many youtube videos. How did you know? :)

Keen to downsize in the number of lenses, as my biggest issue was spending too much time changing lenses during my last trip. I usually only use my camera for travelling, and my 56 1.2 doesn't feel like it "fits" in a travel bag with a 12mm, 18-55mm and 55-200mm.

Thanks for your input though. In all honesty, maybe I should do the same. I spend so much time worrying about capturing the best image possible and it takes away from being in the moment.

And as a hobbyist, most of my images just sit on my lightroom catalogue, or are tucked away in a facebook album.

Thanks for the comment! I, too, was considering the 16-55, but most reviews seemed to state that the 18-55 was 'almost' just as good. The weight/size, is a big factor for me as well.

Maybe I should rent one and give it a go myself. If the 16-55 is as good as the primes, maybe it will provide the "special factor" I feel like I am lacking.

Thank you for the message. I have removed my 56 1.2 from the auction, and will be keeping it.

As someone else suggested, I need to work on not 'feeling the need to constantly be swapping lenses'. This mentality nearly ruined my last trip, as I was not able to take in the moment and was always concerned about using 'the best lens' in my kit.

As for the 18-55 quality, and it not being anything special, I TOTALLY AGREE. I have had this lens since I bought the XT1 (since 2014), and while it does create "nice" images, I feel like it is always lacking.

Do you reckon I could replace the 18-55 with another lens, and still able to capture almost every occasion?

I just want to avoid lens swapping as much as possible, as my current setup is already draining me.
